I have to wonder about Richard Alpert. While Locke is baffling him with his super confidence, instructing him on how to interact with his time-lost doppelganger, and rabble-rousing the Others into a meet and greet with Jacob, is Richard thinking, "This is weird stuff, but it reminds me a little of when four people from the future showed up back in '77 and wanted to blow up our H-bomb."
The Others clearly don't know a goddamn thing about how to dismantle a hydrogen bomb. I could have sworn Faraday told them to bury it in concrete because iit was leaking radiation. Looks like they just spackled Jughead up and stashed it in an old Indiana Jones set.
I love Super Locke. Richard: "You seem different somehow. Like a lot less of a gullible tool. It's unnerving." Locke: "If you say so. By the way, I want you to take me to meet Jacob. Hell, I think EVERYONE SHOULD MEET JACOB!" Richard: "Great. Is it too much to ask for a leader who isn't some sort of dickwad?"
Come on. Sweeping romantic declaration of love from James and Juliet interrupted by Kate climbing down the ladder into the sub? Total sitcom moment. So is Sawyer suddenly acting like Clark Kent exposed to Kryptonite when Kate's around. All that was missing was Sawyer looking into the camera and go, "Uh oh!"
The Dharma sub seems a lot like the old 20,000 Leagues Under The Sea ride at Disneyland.
I think my favorite moment was Dr. Chang exposing Hurley as not knowing anything about 20th century history. If it didn't happen on Tattooine, Hoth, Bespin, or Endor, Hurley's at a loss.
Hard to believe the season is over next week. Even though everything is coming to a head, it doesn't feel like this season is ready to finish. I can say I really have no idea where this is all going and where the characters will be at the start of next season.
I know I said I was out of these threads, but I loved two moments tonight.
1. Hurley getting exposed because he didn't know who the president was, exactly as he predicted a few episodes back!
2. The shot of Locke leading the pilgrimage to Jacob. A direct copy of Jack leading the pilgrimage to the radio tower at the beginning of "Through the Looking Glass", right down to the music! Interesting that the only person to make both treks is Sun.
NOW I'm out!
You believe me, don't you? Please believe what I just said...
Man I was starting to love Kate for once. Especially after she told Jack to stick it (okay she didn't really put it that way.) But then they have to go tease the Juliet/Sawyer break up. *sigh*
Why would Jack want to undo everything that happened. Okay, I know. Easy answer. People died and the whole experience has been awful. But really if you think about it almost everybody is better off now. Jin/Sun saved their marriage. Kate isn't going to jail and has a son. Locke isn't crippled. Jack is over his drinking. Hurley isn't cursed anymore. Desmond has a wife and son instead of pushing buttons in a hatch. Charlie died but went out as a hero instead of a drug addict. Claire died but she got to spend time with her baby instead of giving it up for adoption. I don' remember what Sawyer was doing on the plane but it wasn't as good as having Juliet. Maybe I'm crazy but I think they're all better off. Plus there is the whole what doesn't kill you makes you strong (for those who weren't killed of course.)
As funny as the Hurley/Chang scene was (and it was indeed one of the funniest in LOST history), I also enjoyed the subtlety of Sawyer's "well, we can invest in Microsoft or bet on the Super Bowl" plan to Juliet. Surely Sawyer/Kate/Juliet are going to get that sub turned around or something, since Jim has to live up to his promise to murder Phil. Though, it would be kind of awesome to find out that they've all been alive from 1977 onward all this time.
Was the shot of Widmore patting Eloise's stomach supposed to hint that she's currently pregnant with Daniel? In 1977? So Faraday has been in his late 20's this whole time? And seven years younger than Charlotte? Uh....that doesn't quite add up. Especially since in real life, Jeremy Davies is 13 years older than Rebecca Mader.
I'm guessing that Locke was actually asked by Jacob to attempt to kill him. This might be what Jacob meant when he asked John to help him....Jacob's stuck in limbo or something, and he wants Locke to put him out of his misery.

So if Jughead's been buried under the Dharma village this whole time, maybe the radiation leak was responsible for all of the failed pregnancies amongst the Others once they moved into the houses.
(edited by Big Bad on 7.5.09 0437) Kirk, crackers are a family food. Happy families. Maybe single people eat crackers, we don't know. Frankly, we don't want to know. It's a market we can do without.

Boone, Shannon, Paolo, Nikki, Artz and some others may disagree with you.

Actually, that list makes me take Kate's side.

Interesting, but how to explain the fact that DHARMA people living on top of Jughead for years were able to have children? See: Ethan.
Maybe the Island was punishing the Others for some screwup by taking away their ability to procreate. Maybe that has something to do with the Others following Locke on his mission to kill Jacob. Or maybe this is all just pointless speculation.
I'm firmly on Kate's side. I think she was making the most sense, even though her position is likely fueled by not wanting time to change where she ends up landing in LA as a fugitive going to prison and that her feelings were hurt that Jack would rather change time and forget he ever met or banged her.
Someone please correct me if I am wrong, or fill me in if I missed something, but wasn't the speculation that when they were drilling and called Chang down that they were drilling into the leaking bomb? But we saw last night that the bomb was fine, so if that is the case, what were they afraid to drill into?

No, they found the time-wheel chamber. And it was packed with its own spooky energy.

Miniscule, nitpicky note, but betting on the Cowboys in '78 Super Bowl (after the 1977 season) doesn't seem like it would've paid off too much. The Cowboys were favored over the Broncos in Super Bowl 12. But heck, it shows Sawyer knows his Super Bowls...and probably could've cashed in on one of those weird bets; like betting Robert Newhouse would throw a TD pass.
But, DAMN, the silent interaction with facial expressions between Juliet, Sawyer and Kate on the sub was heart-wrenching. A lot of fans hate Kate, but I was ready to start my own chapter of the Kate Must Die Brigade after that.
Funny dichotomy between the way Hurley and Sawyer were being interrogated. Sawyer was tied to a chair by three guys and beaten for a good time; Hurley was asked three basic questions and cracked in about 20 seconds. Hurley's been awesome this season, starting right out of the gate with "I heart Shih-tzus"
Sad but true, yet I have a 30 year old co-worker who also has NO idea that there was a Korean War.

Why, what did Kate do besides climb on board the sub? She didn't know Sawyer and Juliet were there. The Kate hate this season towards her theoretically breaking up the Sawyer/Juliet couple has no basis on anything Kate has actually done. It's not like she's been flirting with Sawyer or showing some leg at him when Juliet's not looking. Kate came back to the Island to find Claire. She's actually been innocent of any wrong-doing. Her existence seems to be enough to set Kate haters off.

That's probably because there aren't any movies about the Korean War while there are plenty of WWII and Vietnam movies.

Right before Kate came down, it seemed like Sawyer had finally accepted his fate and would be content to live happily ever after with Juliet. Then Kate showed up...Sawyer's expression changed...and Juliet's face said "You're sleeping on the couch for the next 30 years, mister. The old couch out on the back porch".
I've been apathetic about Kate since the series began, but with that sequence I could see where the hate comes from. I'm glad that I got SO involved with the plot and characters enough that I felt that strongly. There haven't been any happily-ever-afters in LOST and it makes for good pathos when you see it ripped away from characters.
So, did he think M*A*S*H was set during World War II or Vietnam?
It was a setup episode, but I enjoyed it. I love how Locke has really grown into being the character he is, although I did get a hint that now he's overconfident and could revert back to being wrong and being a fuck-up. The "other perspective" scene with him and Alpert was brilliant and I didn't see that coming.
I really hope Jack is wrong and that they aren't able to change the past. You gotta think, though, that even if they do blow up the hydrogen bomb, the Island always finds a way to course-correct even when things go wrong. Maybe they're successful, but they still don't change anything.
But, I'd still rather something get in the way of blowing up the bomb.
If Dr. Jackenstein succeeds, then Nikki & Paolo live - if that isn't a reason to hope he fails.
Horace certainly got bulldozed by Radzinsky - I guess Ben didn't bother having Radzinsky killed during the Purge because somebody had to press the buttons.
As a Bronco fan, I did not appreciate Sawyer's subtle dig but I would have bet that way too.
Kate redeemed herself in my eyes when she gave Dr. Jackenstein the verbal slapdown but then Mrs. Dunk stole Sawyer's line of "Son of a bitch" when Kate came down the hatch.
Phil deserves to die a painful death.
Hurley & Miles would make a great spinoff some day and who can blame Hurley for forgetting who Jimmy Carter was - I have been trying to forget too.
Daniel's age has really bothered me the last 2 weeks - he did say he was the youngest in his class at Oxford but the timelines are off.
and why would Locke tell Ben of all people that he wanted to kill Jacob ? Is there an uletrior motive ? Is Locke counting on Ben reacting in a certain way ? Should we start calling Locke "Moses v2.0 ?"
is it next Wednesday yet ? Can they really fit their final cliffhanger into 2 hours ?

Interesting theory, and I won't say that it's wrong, either. This was probably the best episode of the show yet, and you're right about Deathlok being exactly the right kind of character for the show.
