I seriously doubt they'll be able to afford Holtz, and why would he leave ECU for USF when he can wait another year or two and bolt for a higher profile job? Plus I hear he wants to wait until the VT job is available.

I read a bit ago a quote from Holtz saying he was interested for sure, but we'll see. Could just want more money from ECU, but the reasons he mentioned were moving up to a BCS conference and Florida recruiting ground.

He doesn't really recruit in Florida now, though. I don't understand why BCS schools are hiring smaller college coaches from other areas. We see how well that worked out for Louisville. USF is a bigger name than ECU but I think he'd be better off in the Carolina/Virginia area.

I think USF has more money to pay a coach if they need to. The administrators have to realize that if the team is going to consistently compete for Big East titles, some money will have to be spent. In addition to the low coaching salaries, USF also operates on the smallest recruiting budget among BCS schools. USF can get away with it largely because there are so many athletes in Florida, but it can't go on forever. The same applies to the prominent boosters who have been calling for Leavitt's dismissal for a couple of years now - they're going to have to put their money where their mouth is or expect the same kinds of results.

I think the USF job is a great one IF the university and its boosters are ready to spend some money. The comparison a lot of people make, and one that I think is natural, is Miami when it was in the Big East - recruiting higher quality athletes led to the Canes dominating a bunch of northern schools and owning the conference. But the Canes didn't get there by pinching pennies. Obviously the overall quality of athlete nationwide has shifted toward the mold Miami used, so maybe it's not quite as inherent an advantage as it was, but it's an advantage nonetheless.

I don't know what to think of Holtz. He's had a few big wins at ECU and has won back-to-back conference titles. That is definitely good. I think his resume is comparable to that of Brian Kelly when Kelly was hired by Cincinnati. But I'm not sure about Holtz's ability to recruit. I guess time will tell, if the hiring does in fact go through.

For whatever it's worth, the same person who tipped me off about discussions with Holtz said they were already talking about contract details and the status of coaches currently on staff, and made it seem like the hiring is inevitable at this point. This same person all but guaranteed to me in mid-December that Leavitt would be fired.

Miami first joined the Big East in 1991, several years after they won and played for national titles. I wouldn't compare USF's situation to theirs per se.

Good pick-up for them, I never heard about ECU until he started winning games there and pulled off some major upsets.

Hope it works out for them. I live in South Florida and am so sick of the Gators, FSU and Miami that I am willing to see USF step up and be the top team in Florida.

According to the announcers, Pollard was also involved in the play in Houston that took Wes Welker out of the 2009 playoffs. That is just freaky.
