OK. How can you mention Dana Hersey without bring up the greatest show on WSBK Ask the Manager (flyingdreams.org)

PeterStork: Sinclair has secured the MyNetwork affiliation for WDKA/49 Paducah as part of a group deal between their stations and MNTV. Raycom (owners of WQWQ/UPN The Beat in Paducah/Cape) have also made deals with MNTV, most notably for their WUAB/Cleveland (as noted above).

Both Raycom and Sinclair have shown reticence in dealing with CW, primarily due to CW's demand of reverse compensation. That is, the station owner pays the network for the affiliation. Traditional U.S. network/affiliate relations had the network paying the station for the affiliation. It was partially due to demands of reverse compensation that led to NBC and CBS yanking affiliations away from KRON/San Francisco and WJXT/Jacksonville, respectfully, a few years ago.

MyNetwork TV has gained some ground on CW due to their awarding affiliations on barter. Stations gets free programming plus a few commercial spots, MNTV gets free exposure plus spots of their own, both sides win. It's not inconceivable for owners like Raycom and Sinclair to affiliate with CW at some point, but the network's compensation demands will likely need to be scaled back.

Gugs/Keeper: WSBK is owned by CBS (along with WBZ/Boston), and will likely revert to independent rather than allow MyNetwork (owned by Fox) to gain any strong foothold in Boston. MNTV may align with another station (if one is available), or perhaps run secondary on Fox-owned WFXT.

That's quite a bit of information, but I hope it helps somewhat. FYI, the list I've primarily consulted is Chip Kelley's ongoing CW/MyNetwork/Independent stations scorecard.

The problem with digital multicasting is that the more you multiplex your channel, the more you have to divide up your bandwidth and degrade your picture. The HDTV "purists" are already screaming at stations that add even a single channel vs. using their entire bandwidth to provide the cleanest picture possible for their core HD channel.

Most of the multicasting on network affiliates seems to be limited to adding a weather channel of some sort or a simulcast of their SD broadcast. But Fox does digital at 720p, so adding something like "My Network" as a secondary would be feasible. And Fox has never been shy about their desire to take advantage of multicasting.

And Guru's right about religious stations. The few I know of broadcasting digitally are running multiple faith networks.

The CW situation is a VERY interesting one here in Denver, namely, for the (soon-to-be-former) UPN affiliate, KTVD-20.

At the end of last year, KTVD, owned by a small company in Minnesota, I believe, called Twenver, was sold to Gannett, the owner of the NBC affiliate here in town, KUSA. So even right there, an interesting situation developed with one company owning two local channels. Before KTVD's sale was finalized (and I don't think it has been yet), WHAM! Here comes the UPN/WB merger.

On a personal note, this causes concern for me, because one of my good friends works at KTVD. Said friend (who is supporting a spouse and children) told me that both KUSA and KTVD will likely be operated under one house, which of course, more than likely leads to job cuts. IF KTVD's sale to Gannett doesn't happen, I can see the channel possibly still existing in some form, thus retaining my friend's job... that is, of course, if KTVD's operation doesn't get absorbed into KWGN Channel 2's (the current affiliate for The WB) and can somehow exist as an independent channel or is brought in to, say, My Network TV or something.

I'm keeping my fingers crossed for my friend and all those who'll be negatively affected by the emergence of The CW-- and for that matter, all of those folks who have been or may inevitably affected by corporate mergers. I'm all for companies wanting to make and maximize profit-- that's the reason why they exist after all- but dang if I can't help that stuff like this brings about consternation for me.

(I'm trying not to be an annoyance by posting numerous responses to threads, but there just seems to be a few things I can chime in on and perhaps not sound like a doofus as I am wont to do. :/)

It says the Chicago CW (had almost typed UPN) affiliate will be WGN, but are they talking about the WGN that is widely available on cable, or WGN Chicagoland, which is only available for the Chicago area?? *Crosses my fingers for it being the former, not the latter*

Well, the Superstation hasn't aired WB (the current affiliation) since 1999, so I would guess that that would remain the same when it switches to The C-W.

Wikipedia has this to say: "Whether or not the new CW network will be carried on the Superstation feed has not been officially announced, but this is doubtful since local affiliates in almost each market have been established after the discontinuation of the Superstation WB feed, and the addition of full-powered UPN stations in markets with either a low-power or cable WB affiliates."

WBNG is the CBS affiliate in Binghamton, and it looks like they're shunting the CW onto the digital feed for that channel. In all liklihood in the Binghamton market (and some others in the Southern Tier of NY), the CW will wind up on WBXI (the current WB affiliate), or WBPN (UPN). I'd bet on it being WBXI, since they're affiliated with WBNG, and WBPN will either cease to exist, or become a My Network affiliate.

For those who care, of course.

I'm gonna go out on a limb and say they PROBABLY wouldn't announce affilation on one station only to change their minds a few months later.

The addition of these eight Sinclair stations increases The CWs national coverage to more than 90% of the country, including 20 of the Top 20 markets and 40 of the Top 40.

    The newly signed affiliates are:

    * KMWB Minneapolis, MN (DMA rank 15).

    * WNUV Baltimore, MD (DMA rank 24).

    * WLFL Raleigh-Durham (Fayetteville), NC (DMA rank 29).

    * WNAB Nashville, TN (DMA rank 30).

    * WVTV Milwaukee, WI (DMA rank 33).

    * WTTO & WDBB Birmingham-Tuscaloosa, AL; simulcast on WDBB (DMA rank 40).

    * KOCB Oklahoma City, OK (DMA rank 45).

    * KFBT Las Vegas (DMA rank 48).

All of these stations are currently affiliates of The WB, with the exception of KFBT, which is an independent station. Sinclair operates WNUV and WDBB under a Local Marketing Agreement. Sinclair provides sales and other non-programming related services for WNAB under an Outsourcing Agreement; the station is owned by Lambert Broadcasting, LLC.

Wonder who blinked - CW or Sinclair?

FINALLY we know what we probably knew all along (see posts up there).

In other old business, WFTC finally sent me back an email confirming that Smackdown! would be back in the Friday time slot on 5/28 (aka "when Sweeps are over") so I was right there, too. Man if I'm right so much how come I don't find ways to make more money?

Biggest markets with no CW as of right now:
41 Harrisburg-Lncstr-Leb-York
44 Memphis
72 Honolulu
77 Springfield, MO
90 Burlington-Plattsburgh
92 Harlingen-Wslco-Brnsvl-McA
98 Johnstown-Altoona

I don't anticipate one, either. There's no local UPN or WB here. Off-campus cable (Adelphia and D+E Communications) has WB11 out of NY, and Penn State cable has WB11 and UPN out of Boston. I think they also have WB17 out of Philly on campus, as well.

Interestingly enough, the only reason (supposedly) we got the UPN channel out of New York added to the campus cable was so that the WWE would return to the Bryce Jordan Center. They said something to the effect of "we can't sell out if you can't watch us", which is basicaly a lie because they almost always sell out.
