here's an odd excerpt: ---- U.S. Attorney Paul McNulty told reporters after the hearing, "This was a good opportunity for the government to get a very good result." He said he had no doubts in the strength of the government's case, and that a 20-year sentence "sends a very strong message to anyone who would be at all tempted to turn their backs on the United States." ----

| #2 Posted on 15.7.02 1516.42 | When the judge asked Lindh what he was guilty of, the 21-year-old Californian answered: "I provided my services as a soldier to the Taliban last year, from about August to November. In the course of doing so I carried a rifle and two grenades. And I did so knowingly and willingly, knowing that it was illegal."
...
Although Lindh never fired on American forces, Bellows said he committed a felony by fighting in support of the Taliban, whose "control of Afghanistan provided protection and sanctuary for al Qaeda."
I didn't realize this was a felony charge. When were these laws passed???

from the link, end of 3rd paragraph:
Lindh agreed to plead guilty to one count--willfully supplying services to the Taliban--and also to one new count filed today, carrying an explosive device while committing a felony.
