Since the national media is making Lincoln Chafee out to be such a great hero for calling for Trent Lott to step down, a few facts about this man. The only public office he held before becoming a U.S. Senator upon his father's death was as the mayor of the 5th largest city in Rhode Island. Now, remember how large RI is, then imagine how large the 5th largest city must be. If not for his father, he would not even have been bright enough to be mayor of that city. The only person in RI who has travelled on parental coattails further is Patches Kennedy. He is a Republican in name only. His Democratic opponent in 2000 was far to the right of him. He is a disgrace to the party and should go play with Jim Jeffords in turncoat country, except that would place him in the minority, which he would be afraid to do. I feel so dirty for voting for this fraud in 2000.
I want you to know, I agree with everything I've just said.

All kidding aside, there gets to a point where even I wouldn't vote for a Republcian anymore and Lincoln is pretty-damn close to that point.
Trust me, my voting for him won't ever happen again. Its what happens when the Republican Party in a state is a complete joke, you don't like the Democratic nominee personally, and your stuck with Patches Kennedy as your Representative in the House, so you need to see a Republican win and hope maybe he has some common sense (Chafee had avoided making any real statements during his time filling his fathers term, and he had no real record as a mayor).
edit: plus, at the time it gave the Republicans control of the Senate (pre-Jeffords). Ironic that Chafee getting elected helped Lott maintain control of the Senate for a few extra months.

Or you could just get over it? Life's too short to worry about doom-sayers such as yourself who are so quick to find the reason we're all going to die. Something tells me G.W. isn't that good of a scapegoat for this particular situation.
