| #1 Posted on 16.8.04 2233.20 | Instant Rating: 3.52 | I think there is one clear choice. EDGE. He hates Randy Orton, as per his promos a few months back when he came back. He is pulling a line between face and heel right now anyway. I suppose they could go with a 3 man group for a while too, but Edge just seems to fit in perfectly with them right now. Looking at the RAW roster, the only other option besides Edge would have to be Christian. But, I think Edge makes a whole lot more sense.

I agree. Edge is the perfect choice to replace Orton. I mean, remember Edge is the guy that ended Orton's 7 month IC title reign. Edge is the IC champion, so that already makes him a viable opponent against Orton. Edge's character needs the reinvigoration of a heel turn, and taking Orton's spot in Evolution would do just that.

Who says they have to replace him now? If a replacement is indeed chosen, it should be an out-of-the-blue swerve ...
Shelton Benjamin, maybe? He's got the cockiness and the "blue-chipper-ness" about him ...

That's true. But Edge also got booed out of his hometown, and could also be suitable motivation for his heel turn. And its pretty clear that Edge's business of taking down Evolution is done, so WWE already pretty much threw it away.

...mostly because I don't want them to change Orton's theme to some Jim Johnston-sounding rap song while making him hi-five the fans on the way to the ring.
I am aware that any of this is highly unlikely.

I don't see how people are calling this a face turn for Orton. Did his opening promo sound like a face promo?
What if he doesn't leave Evolution at all? Orton seems like the sort of frat boy who might take a beating like that and say, "Thank you, sir. May I have another?" This was a way to humble Orton, but it may not have meant he's out of Evolution.
Isn't it more of a pussy heel thing for Orton to stay with the group and realize he really IS nothing without Evolution? Eventually he may get fed up with the treatment, but I'm not totally sure he's ready to stand up to HHH, Batista or even Flair.

This scenario sounds a little too Pedigree-To-Ortonish to really take place. Which means it's perfect for the Raw Satires! Hocking, you reading?
Hopefully Orton doesn't show up next week out of the crowd to RKO Flair, and then starts saying 'Anytime, anywhere' while holding up his fingers to form an O.

That would be out of the blue, he's young, and although he is, well, piss poor in the ring, working with Flair, HHH and Batista he can only improve. Randy Orton wasn't exactly brilliant when he joined Evolution, but he has improved a lot (weird looking submission moves aside).
Besides which Maven seemed to be getting a push before his time off, so he is possibly seen as another star for the future.

Actually I see it more as useless (Flair), Past (Triple H), and future (Batista). They don't really have anyone who is at the top of their game in the present. I'd give the final spot to either Edge or Jericho, because we still don't know which one is going heel.
But let's be serious here, this is Evolution, they'll probably add someone who sucks, like Garrison Cade, like the rest of them.

He's beaten all members of Evolution and gotten beat down by all members of Evolution, which can be translated into a "mutual respect" thing. HHH can say that Orton has been replaced by a guy they know can get things done because he's beaten them all. Then they can pull the "nobody cared about me and forgot about me when I was injured" card with Shelton and complete the story. Then the Shelton/Orton program that was started before Shelton's injury can continue, but with the sides reversed.

That's a good point. However, thinking back on some past bookings, I'm willing to bet you're thinking much more logically than the guys that are sitting in the WWE booking room.

Yup. In a title match against HHH, Orton will lay down and give the title back to HHH, and return to Evolution. He'll be a pussy for a couple months, while people like Benoit try to get him to realize that he's an idiot. Randy will gradually turn likeable, and just as he really is ready to stand up to HHH, he'll get hurt...real badly. But not badly enough that he can't recover in time to win the Royal Rumble. | CANADIAN BULLDOG

I'm thinking that other than Batista and maybe a heel Edge, he has very few heel opponents left to put him in a serious program with (part of that being the lack of overall heels, but still....).
As a heel, Benoit could work against Jericho (it's been waaaay too long), Eugene, Regal, Benjamin, etc.
He already has reason to challenge Orton again, and having him "befriend" Orton only to turn on him by, say, Unforgiven, gives Orton a challenger that delays the inevitable feud with HHH a little bit longer.

HOWEVER, if the whole point of Orton getting turfed was HHH's jealousy over Orton winning the world title, there's a minor logic gap to put Benoit in Evolution and then have him challenge Orton.

Why would he accept a (presumably) subserviant role to HHH though? RAW on Monday confirmed that the groups mission was not collective success, but to ensure success for HHH.
I'm guessing either Orton takes his beating and stays part of the group, or they just go with it as a threesome now. If somebody takes over the Orton role (future) they almost inevitably have to challenge HHH at some stage (evolution and all), meaning they'd just have to rehash the same storyline again (insert smarky comment).
