A team that lost to Maine knocked off the Sons of Ron Zook. Forget whether he gets fired in the off-season, the only question is whether Zook makes it to the Cocktail Party next weekend.

For the record, Steve Spurrier never beat Mississippi State in Starkville either. So, its not like Zook is in uncharted waters as far as that goes. | ges7184

Right now, fireronzook.com is too busy to get to.

Unless I read this wrong, he's fired, but will get to coach out the season.
"Zook and his staff will coach the team for the remainder of the season, Herbstreit reported." Emphasis mine.

Thats what I was shocked about. That Florida is basically giving up on the season and they have a lame duck coach going the rest of the way now. | Dutchie

| #10 Posted on 25.10.04 2136.30 | Instant Rating: 7.73 | Why not let him coach out the season? At best, they could get an assistant who may or may not be considered a candidate for the opening to run the team. They're not going to get anyone they'd really want (Spurrier, Meyer, etc) over halfway through the season. Zook can now coach like he's not afraid of being fired - they've already done it, so what's the worst they can do now, kick him out earlier? He's got house money; Zook can show any potential suitors what he can do with free reign, and maybe even get this team to a bowl game for that all-important postseason income.
Zook's getting fired about 3.5 years into his tenure with a 20-13 record (.606). Frank Solich from Nebraska got fired after only getting nine wins last season. I got a big bowl of sour grapes here, man.

Solich was done after going 7-7 the year before and pretty much embarrassing Nebraska football with his pathetic defenses and crappy recruiting. Last year really didn't have anything to do with it, but they figured they could get a marquee coach coming off eight wins (Solich was fired before the win over Michigan State in the Alamo Bowl, which gave them nine; they were coached by Bo Pelini for that game).
Solich, like Zook, followed a legendary coach that had made the program a perennial powerhouse. Zook, like Solich, failed to live up to the standard. Firing Zook NOW is better than letting the program continue to rot under his watch, like Notre Dame did with Bob Davie. Continuing to die for the sake of loyalty and erroneous confidence in someone is not a good idea.

| #12 Posted on 26.10.04 2344.20 | Instant Rating: 6.10 | Would Spurrier come back in, that would be pretty wild. Other candidates I heard mention is the already mentioned Utah coach Urban Meyer along with Louisville's Bobby Petrino, and Oklahoma Bobby Stoops Click Here (usatoday.com) I say no way on Stoops happening. Petrino has a good thing going on in Louisville, depends if he'd want a high profile Florida gig. But Louisville are changing to a top conference next year would really hurt them if he leaves... Seems like Meyer's is a good candidate, Spurrier would be a nice return too. Also heard California coach Jeff Tedford is an outside candidate.
