I've got a clip from the article below. It just points out what a fantastic team player we're losing....

Team doctors couldn't assure him that the shoulder would be healed in time for the start of the season and Butler said he didn't think it would be wise for him to tie down a roster spot until then. He said the possibility existed that he wouldn't be passed on a physical at the end of training camp regardless of how the shoulder looked and he didn't want to postpone the inevitable.

So all cries for attention are a bad thing? Sure, it's easy to look at his past and say this is a publicity stunt, but to this extreme? That seems pretty unlikely to me. Sometimes cries for attention are cries for help.
