Didn't the WWE start the whole hardcore thing to compete with their competition, so as not to be outdone by ECW?

Well, those days are gone and finally that style has gone with it. My guess ... they keep with their tradition of stealing ideas from their competition and making them better (a la Bill Gates).

Maybe an X Division type belt is in the future for WWE.

I'm guessing "he busted his ass for years, toiling in ECW at best, then finally got to wrestle, for a title, in WWE, at MSG, and fans were chanting his name". Shit, how would you feel if you got to wrestle in your hometown (or at least somewhere close enough) after so long?

I agree with most of what has been said, but you're forgetting something important. Protecting your opponent, if someone goes out there and makes crisp moves and keeps the flow of the match going but injures his opponent, does not have good workrate.
