SO today is the last day of the regular season. There is only one playoff spot that is still open and the is the final spot in the East. The winner of the Philly/NYR game later this afternoon is in. If Philly wins they jump ahead of Montreal into 7th. If the Rangers win they bump Philly out and take 8th place.

There are other games today with playoff implications and that is more for positioning.

Buffalo and New Jersey plays today, winner gets 2nd seed in the East. Pittsburgh plays today as well if the win and if NJ looses, they are tied in points but NJ has the tie breaker via owning the Penquings in the regular season, so Pitssburgh is 4th and not moving, like wise Ottawa is in 5th and played all thier games, also they cannot be caught. Boston is also solidly in 6th and cannot be caught. Montreal is currenlty 7th, and as stated above will only drop down to 8th with a win by Philly. So our only match up in the East that is guarenteed right is Pittsburgh vs. Ottawa.

Potential matchups:

1. Washington vs. 8. NYR/Montreal
2. NJ/Buffalo vs. 7. Montreal/Philadelphia
3. Buffalo/NJ vs. 6. Boston

Guarenteed matchups:
4. Pittsburgh vs. 5. Ottawa

As for the West San Jose is finshed and in 1st, However if Chicago beats Detroit today the take 1st in the West. Vancouver and Phoenix are locked in 3rd and 4th. Then we get to the mess that is 5-6-7. Detroit and Nashville are tied with 100 points, Nashville is done but has more wins, so if Detroit loses in regulation they are behind Nashville. LA is currently in 7th with 99 points. So if LA and Detroit lose in regulation the order is Nashville/Detroit/LA. If Detroit loses in regulation, but LA loses in OT then it's Nashville/LA/Detroit. If Detroit loses in regulation and LA wins its LA/Nashville/Detroit. If LA wins and Detroit loses in OT then it's LA/Detroit/Nashvile. If Detroit wins or loses in regulation and LA loses in regulation it's Detroit/Nashville/LA. I think that covers all the possibilities. Whew! And Colorado is locked in 8th.

Possible matchups:

1. San Jose/Chicago vs. 8. Colorado
2. Chicago/San Jose vs. 7. LA/Nashville/Detroit
3. Vancouver vs. 6. Nashville/Detroit/LA
4. Phoenix vs. 5. Detroit/Nashville/LA

I'd like to see Chicago/Detroit in the 1st round just for the lol factor of the supposed top 2 teams in the West (and the best ratings grabbers I'd imagine) having to play all their games on Versus.

That Rangers/Flyers game is on the NHL Channel Network today if you happen to get it. (I wish I got it in HD!)

It really speaks to the power of their contract and the creativity of both the league and NBC that NBC (which, on my affiliate, is currently showing infomercials) didn't pick this one up at the last minute. :(

I want it for the lol factor of knocking the Blackhawks out of their best chance in years to win a Stanley Cup by beating them in the first round.

Really though, I'm good with any potential matchup for the Wings in the first round except for Vancouver. Alex Burrows may be an ass, but he's right in that they've had the Wings' number all this year.

NBC may have locked into the Capitals game, to showcase Ovi before the playoffs, before the race for the 8th seed heated up.

Yeah, but the NYR/Philly game started at 3. I agree with CRZ they should have picked it up and aired it.

As it is the matchups are now decided.

East:
1. Washington vs. 8. Montreal
2. New Jersey vs. 7. Philadelphia
3. Bufflao vs. 6. Boston
4. Pittsburgh vs. 5. Ottawa

West:
1. San Jose vs. 8. Colorado
2. Chicago vs. 7. Nashville
3. Vancouver vs. 6. Los Angeles
4. Phoenix vs. 5. Detroit

Also to note Crosby scored 2 to take the lead in the Rocket Richard Race only to have Stamkos score one and tie him for a share of the trophy. Henrik Sedin won the Art Ross Trophy.

No schedule has been annouced yet though.

My favorite part of the final weekend. Karma can be quite a hilarious and satisfying thing. Evander Kane is my new favorite player named Kane... especially because he doesn't beat the crap out of helpless cabbies.

The real lesson to be learned here is that it's rarely a good idea to instigate a fight in Atlanta against a guy named Evander.

Heh, the only possible combination you didn't mention was Detroit/LA/Nashville, and that's what happened.

Wow, you're right. And here I thought I caught every possible situation. Just goes to show how much of a mess those three spots were :)
