I’ve got a Post Script for you this week as something has been eating at me since I finished typing this commentary. In addition to me being cut out of Tough Enough, there was one other part of the show that caught my attention. The “rib” the kid who had the head injury played on his fellow contestants. For those of you who missed the show, the kid got hurt taking a bump (an arm drag, I believe) his head and neck were really sore and he was dizzy. They sent him to a doctor for an MRI. The doctor told him it was nothing serious but he decided to play a “rib” and tell everyone he was seriously hurt.
Now I don’t know if this was his idea (as portrayed in the show) or someone from MTV’s but it was one of the most inappropriate and appalling things I’ve ever seen. If there is one thing you do not “rib” about, or make light of in this business it is getting hurt, and being injured. We put our bodies and in turn our health and even or lives in other people’s hands every day, and that is not to be taken lightly or used for the butt of a joke.
I can’t believe that Bill, Al, and Ivory even went along with it and played it up as being a great “rib”. This kid came back to the show in a neck collar with his head taped up and told everyone he was seriously injured and would have to leave the show. His fellow contestants were in tears for the guy and I can only imagine how the guy who was in the ring with him when he took the bad bump must have felt. There is nothing more taboo or unacceptable in this business than faking an injury like this guy did. Far too many of us have really suffered injuries like this guy was pretending to have and making light of it is disgusting.
How do you think a guy like Darren Drozdov would feel watching this show seeing a guy making a joke out of a supposed neck injury? Droz is in a wheel chair today from a neck injury he suffered in the ring and I can guarantee you he finds no humour in that. Everyone I’ve talked to in the locker room found this part of the show extremely offensive and I thought it appropriate to let you know the truth, that behavior like this is unacceptable in our business, despite what MTV and the producers of Tough Enough think makes for good television.
Perhaps these kids could better spend their time actually learning how to work and respect this business instead of trying to play “ribs” and disrespect it.
That’s my tirade for this week, Lance

That was the funny part for me, not Jonah's creativity. It's very easy to see where the wrestlers would get offended by a rib like that....they work a lot harder than these young kids have so far. | dMr

A little bit insensitive? Sure. Funny? Absolutely. Maybe a reminder to respect the business and still know you should live life and enjoy yourself? Possibly.

| #13 Posted on 10.12.02 1604.59 | | While I found the rib funny, Storm does have a point. He prides himself on never having injured an opponent and I imagine that he would feel quite horrible if he did cause even a major, let alone career ending, injury to someone. So I can understand why he would take offense to someone faking an injury. Not to mention, I've seen the Tough Enough trainers repeatedly bitch at people for faking sickness/injuries (such as the kid in the casting special) so it is a bit hypocritical to support someone doing it as a joke. At least when someone is faking an injury to get out of having to do work, they're not directly hurting someone. Faking an injury as a joke (as we saw) toys with a person's emotions. | oldschoolhero

| #17 Posted on 10.12.02 1711.49 | I may be a bit biased, as I knew Owen Hart...so, I'll try not to shout things:
Wrestling is a sport. It's a fraternity. There's ribs. There's hazing. It's part of the lifestyle. The saying is true, it's all fun and games until someone gets hurt. And when someone gets hurt, it's horrible to know somebody when they do get hurt.
The rib was *potentially* offending, but they didn't go overboard and try to make it huge. It was one kid trying to be a funny guy, that's all.
I agree with Lance, but the kid was just trying to fit in.

I'm not so sure "the kid was just trying to fit in."
As he said himself, Jonah was looking to up his standing in the eyes of the trainers by showing them that he could act or play a character. Using a supposed "head injury" to do that may have crossed a line, and I can see how some could be offended by that.

I was thinking the EXACT same thing..sans eye rolling.
And I thought the "rib" was pretty funny.
On another note...I'm only from Oklahoma, BUT, this usage and over-usage of the term "rib" is totally new to me.
I've heard someone say he was "ribbing" someone...but I've never heard a practice joke called "a rib" until the TE III episode and now I've heard it 9,000 times.
