| #3 Posted on 17.5.05 1014.16 | Instant Rating: 10.00 | It seemed like part of the reason Lance took the OVW gig was to get off the road and get home more. He said as much in his retirement commentary
the travel schedule and off time should work out very favourable for my family and I am excited about my future role in this business.
It hasn't sounded like he's actually gotten that free time he was looking for, so this seems like a happier solution.
Outside of Bret*, Lance's as probably as appealing a Canadian guy to train with.
There was talk of WWE one day setting up another training faciulity in Canada at some point in the future - the far future since they still don't have Atlanta going - and obviously his place would be the speculated starting point.
* - but then I think Bret could put his name on the door, show up no more than once a month while other people do the grunt work and people will still be knocking down the doors to train there, so I may have perspective issues.

A reinvigorated Stampede Promotion complete with Lance Storm training academy would be an ideal developmental territory for the WWE. Heck, we can dream, can't we?

I think his wrestling school will be a complete success, 'cuz there are very few technical wrestlers better than him. I'd love this. Bruce is booking Stampede into the ground right now.

Lance was so overrated. Decent wrestler *but I'd put him nowhere near the top Canadians. He's a poor man's Chris Jericho. His great push was during the dying days of WCW, when anyone with a pulse was getting a shot. I dunno, not a fan. Also, seems like a real humorless guy (from his web commentaries) The constant bitching about the industry was getting old. | asteroidboy

But as a wrestling instructor...what's he gonna do, teach guys how not to get over? Al Snow trained the Tough Enough kids and the only one left on the roster is another down cycle away from getting fired.
Storm was a good technical wrestler, but as a performer he was incredibly uncharismatic, to the point where they tried (and failed) to make THAT his gimmick. Storm might be able to teach you how to wrestle, but he would be the last person I'd want to train me on how to cut a promo or develop a character, which is as important.
Now guys like HBK who dabbled in wrestling schools, I'd be all there. Same goes for Bret Hart. Same goes triple for Mick Foley. If I wanted to wrestle, I would buy my own rusted out Ford Fairmont and sleep in it for the opportunity to learn from Foley.
I realize that avenues for instruction are probably limited and that many guys will probably leap at the chance to learn from Storm.
But seriously... those who can't do....

Are you referring to Maven? Don't forget John(ny Nitro) Hennigan, Matt Morgan & Jackie Gayda. And Matt Cappotelli has been working RAW brand house shows, so he's likely to be on the cusp of getting called up to the main roster.
Plus, I feel Nowinski would still be around on TV had it not been for his injury.

"Now as you yank back on the leg, appear largely disinterested in life." Still, solid in-ring skills can't hurt. Most of these new guys can't work a lick, take Hassan as an example. His moves aren't too shabby, but he can't transition out of anything. His stuff looks terribly disjointed. Is there any doubt he's only in the position he's in because of the gimmick, and that he only has the gimmick because he can talk?
I still think Storm's school would do better than that fat guy's from Beyond the Mat. I wouldn't give that tubbo my hard-earned money if he had a signed letter of recommendation from Jesus. Lance will give them the essentials, and it's not like they won't be able to pick up the gift of gab later on, he's not against charisma; he just don't got none. Besides, can anyone really teach you to promo? Every master of the mic honed his own yak skills, if it was taught we'd have never gotten beyond: "LET ME TELL YOU PEOPLE SUMPIN' RIGHT NOW!"

No doubt. Like my friend jivesoulbro says, if Vince was behind all the great promos of the Attitude era, you'd have Bob Holly telling Billy Gun to go lick a monkey's rectum.
In the end, choosing a school would depend on a guy's strengths and weaknesses. If he was good on the mic, but not in the ring, Storm could be an ideal choice. If it was the other way around, hell, I'd even give Jake Roberts' school a try, provided he was off the pipe.
Storm could give you the wrestling equivalent of learning how to shoot freethrows, dribble properly, distribute the ball and make jump shots. But for promos, your best rejoinder would be, "Oh yeah? Well let's settle this IN THE RING!"

So he never had a "character" or cut blazing promos? So what. That's all OJT. I'd rather have someone like him teaching actual WRESTLING so we don't just have big guys that suck but talk decent, or great talkers that take insane bumps because they can't actually wrestle. With people like Lance training future stars maybe we will get more wrestlers and fewer "entertainers". |
