So how do you think they'll handle the KOR tournament now that they have split SD! and Raw? I'm willing to bet that the tournament will be the first time we'll see any SD! vs Raw matchups. My guess is that Vince will pick an entrant, and Ric will pick the opponent, then Ric picks a wrestler to enter, and Vince picks the opponent. I can picture Vince picking D-Von and Ric giving Bubbah an opportunity to show D-Von his disapproval of his new attitude in the ring. Then Ric picks Bradshaw, and Vince has the opportunity to make the asshole move and force Farooq to fight his friend.

So are there any other pairs of midcarders that are currently on opposite shows that could be brought into a quarterfinal match with a great built-in storyline, or that you think would just be a great match-up?

Do you think that they'll continue to save Raw vs SD! for PPV gimmick matches? (ie KOR, Survivor Series, Rumble...) It would be a good excuse to bring survivor team matches back to Survivor Series... Also, it would make the gimmick ppvs that much more special.

If the WWF is trying to establish two different brands, then mixing up the rosters for KOR matches would not be the way to go. I would think that Raw and Smackdown would be in different brackets like the National and American League in baseball, with the finals pairing the Raw winner against the Smackdown winner at KOR.

Good point, they could certainly go with a Raw bracket and a SD! bracket and only have a Raw/SD! crossover in the final. It would make the KOR final and KOR winner that much more special, but it would allow for less "I haven't been in the ring with *you* for a while", which should be fun. From my point of view, they are not so much trying establish them as completely seperate, as if they were really two different companies, they are more making them seperate enough that if there are crossovers it seems like a special event.

For example, I don't recall ever hearing an "APA" chant before, but when Farooq came out to help Bradshaw at Backlash they started one up. Absence makes the fan mark out...

Personally at this point in time i can only see one kKOTR and that is the next big thing King Brock Lesnar.

Of corse it depends on how far they are going with his intial push becuase there has been so much new talent brought in this year that the crown is pretty much up for grabs for anyone. The only thing i can say to wwf is please for the love of god have the 4 quarterfinals at the actual event itself. I always thought the tourney seemed watered down when it starts with 2 semis, then a final. Funny enough that two of the most successful former kings are Austin and HHH and both their tourneys were the reduced for PPV ones.

Hmm...I could also see them giving it to Benoit. He doesn't really need it, but neither did Kurt Angle.

Rhyno would be another candidate.

If JR has any say in it, we'll be looking at BAH GAWD Bradshaw, BAH GAWD with the crown.

If it were me? Eddie Guerrero.

maybe they'll go back to having the winner get a title shot at Summerslam. When was the last time that happened?

Although it wasn't as a result of winning the King of the Ring, Kurt Angle was in the title match at Summerslam 2000.

The last time they actually used that stip was in 1995 with Mable, I think.

That stip was pretty much put in for Mabel.
Anyway, I think they'll go with RAW and SD! brackets, with the quarterfinals on the show before the ppv, then the semis and crossover finals on the big show.
I would like to see the coronation back, and let the winner get a little mic time too.
Hey, that scenario spawned Austin 3:16 in the first place, who knows what it could do for someone else?

I thought the winner always got a shot, up until about 97 or whenever. I dunno. I don't care enough to look.

God. Even in 1995, as bad as the WWF was at that time, you'd think they could have found a better King of the Ring than stinkin' Mabel.

Anyhoo. I'm not as big a WWF fan as I was a WCW fan, so I'm not going to go back and do research or anything to make sure I'm right. But I do remember that Billy Gunn won KotR in 1999 and got a title shot on RAW against, I believe, The Rock.

Edge, 2001 King of the Ring, never did get a World Title match, and I think a lot of the reasoning behind that stems from the Invasion storyline. Speaking of Edge, up until Backlash he'd really been Billy Gunning his KotR push, huh? But hopefully his (by all accounts) outstanding match with Kurt Angle will be a turning point for him.

I'd absolutely love it if they had a mammoth 64 man tournament spaced over several weeks with the entire roster involved (i.e. a 32 man Raw tourney and a 32 man SD tourney) then had the quarter finals onwards on the actual KotR PPV. You could actually have a best of Raw versus best of SD situation that way, where even the losing finalists have major bragging rights as they come out as the respective best in their division. Admittedly a 64 man tournament would never happen as that would mean main eventers jobbing (or worse winning and eliminating the whole point of KotR: to push a mid carder) and it's probably to smarky an idea to run it in practice, but I don't see any reason why they couldn't do a 32 man tournament, with two divisions of 16.

I think the KotR has lost some of it's special aura that it had at the start and having it be Raw vs SD in the final could really bring back some luster to the crown. Maybe it's just beacuse I'm a sucker for tournaments, but I really think they could make it work. They would have to, however, put the focus on the actual tournament on the PPV rather than the WWF title match which may be asking a bit much. I remeber when Bret won the first (televised) KotR, wasn't the final match the main event, and Hogan-Yokozuna for the belt went on mid-way? That sort of simple placing on the card makes the whole thing seem more important.

I think if they elevate the tournament then the winner obviously gets more of a rub, and if the win is played up as monumentous, then it wouldn't matter whether the winner got a WWF title shot or not. Around the time of the first KotR PPV, I remember them playing up that winning KotR was about the same thing as winning the WWF title and that was just awesome to me, I know that's unlikely to ever happen again but it sure would prevent anyone from "Billy Gunning" the Kingship.

I don't see anything wrong with having a joint tournament for KotR. I think there should be several events a Year (Royal Rumble, King of the Ring, and maybe an old-school Survivor Series) where the two brands have "interpromotional" matches. It would make those events seem like something special again, not to mention it would give fans something to talk about.

The reason I think these three are the events that should intermingle the crews is easy. Wrestlemania and Summer Slam have always been big events, and never need a side-story to get people to watch. Now these three events are side-stories. Royal Rumble is for a shot at the WWF Title, thus giving meaning to who wins the match. If it were to be only one crew or the other, it doesn't make the event special anymore because only one side is getting that chance. If both crews are involved it makes it seem like getting a shot at the Title is so important that both sides are involved.

The same goes for King of the Ring. I feel that the Tournament should be given as much importance as the G-1 or Champion Carnival Tournaments get in Japan. Both side decide upon who will enter the one night tournament in any way they feel is right. Some made up committee creates seedings for the tournament, much like the NCAA (but not as many guys, maybe 4 or 8 per side). Also, everybody is involved in this thing. Nobody is left out, including the current Champ (maybe he is seeded 1). And with the entire show being this tournament it will mean a lot more in the eyes of the fans, that is if winning the KotR is taken seriously by the people in charge.

Survivor Series is something different. I think they should turn it into an all-star game of sorts. Each side chooses five teams of four and they are paired off in matches. Also I would bring back the Ultimate Survivor match, where all the survivors have one more Survivor Series match. The winning side gets something, who knows what... I can't come up with all the ideas
But what this shows is that by intermingling the crews at the right type of event, it can become special and actualy give meaning to other things, and elevate new people in the process.

I like the idea of making King of the Ring a sort of... fight for bragging rights between Raw & Smackdown. Maybe instead of an automatic world title shot, they could give the winner of the title some sort of prize involving the brand extension... time on both shows (thus more money and exposure, etcetera) for a couple of months, or something along those lines. That might serve to make it more than just a throw-away event again.

The matches will be good..... The wwf needs to do something different with KOR! it has lost all meaning in my eyes. Expect to see the apa each other and the dudleys against each other as well..... I think that the king og the ring winner deverses a tittle shot at Fully Loaded! What do you guys think?

My thread is doing well!! All right! (Sorry, this is the first thread I've started here.)

I think a good balance between intra-promotional and interpromotional matches would be to have 4 qualifying matches on each show in the week or two leading up to the tournament, then have 4 interpromotional matches in the quarterfinal matches on the PPV. The advantage is, this forces them to have all three rounds of the tournament at the PPV, which I think most of us agree is ideal, and it maximizes the number of interpromotional matches we get to see. On the other hand, it makes the last semifinal match pretty predictable, ie "a SD! guy advanced in the other semifinal, so the Raw guy will have to win this one." Now that I think about it some more, they could get around that by having both Raw guys win in one bracket and both SD! guys win in the other bracket, so that the semi-finals are intrapromotional, but the final will be interpromotional regardless of who wins the semis. Just a thought...

Someone suggested that everybody be involved in the tournament, but I think that would involve too much jobbing by main eventers. However, I think that one main eventer in the tournament jobbing to the winner in the final--like Angle did for Edge last year--would be cool, and make the Kingship seem that much more important.

I think Angle attempting to repeat as King again would be a little repetitive, though. I think theRock would be a good choice for this role. He doesn't mind jobbing, he's too busy with his movie career to really participate in the title hunt, but the kingship doesn't have to be defended after it's won, so it makes sense that theRock would be interested in it, so he could have a title to claim, without needing to come back and defend it. So what do you think of Brock defeating Rock to become this year's King?

Brock v. Rock would be great just for the fact that JR's head would explode from the similar names. Just for that fact, I'd like to nominate Raven v Maven and Snow v Show as well, with a Chris Benoit v. Chris Jericho grudge match.

I meant for Rock v Brock to be in the final, but that's a great set of quarterfinal matches for pure amusement value.

I doesn't matter who's in the different matches, once both Jericho and Benoit are back on the active roster, Good Ol' JR will be calling everyone "Benoit" at least once a match before long.

Also, the "King of the Ring Gets a Title Shot at Summerslam" was never a stip, it just sorta happened (usually because the guy who won was supposed to be the next "big thing", and needed the title show to prove that). Look at Austin, he wasn't even on the Summerslam card and had a 5 minute pre-show match with Yokozuna before the show.

OMG..that was the backstage poolparty thing right with Todd Pettengil and the 'turd' in the pool...arghghghg..horrible.
And that ring breaking cos of Yoko's weight *boggle*

The title shot format is probably just some thing they throw up when the candidate is worthy and they can use it for an angle or anything. It isnt set in stone like the Royal Rumble/WM thing is.

As I said before, I don't think Brock will be in the KotR.
Too predictable as they don't want to destroy his monster heel heat. He cannot lose so it will be kinda boring..
If he loses the heat is gone.

Edge btw is kinda living up to the King status now. He is slowly crawling up the card (nobody ever said you have to get into the main event in the year!) and will do fine.
