I caught the trailer on NBC last week, and I came away with but one thought ... Why is King Kong so small?

Seriously, it made me think that Peter Jackson was confused and decided to do a remake of "Mighty Joe Young" instead ... Does anyone else think that the new KK is lacking in the "giant monster" category?

For those that donít know, the Tiger Mask character was based on a Japanese cartoon, so Misawa stepping out of that and becoming the best wrestler in his country would be kind of like Chris Benoit doing a Darkwing Duck gimmick and then becoming the Chris Benoit we all mark over. - AWC

If anything, the 1976 version of Kong was too big and exaggerated looking. Plus, the only full body shot I saw was him standing next to a dinosaur.

I was really tepid about the prospects of seeing KK...and then I saw the trailer, which was fantastic. So in that sense, it served its purpose.

I thought it looked EXTREMELY cool & cannot wait to see in December.

I'm very interested in seeing Jack Black pull off a more serious role, and if the trailer is any indication, he seems to adjust just fine.

Jack's gonna knock the Carl Denham role outta the park, I think. I would LOVE to see him get an Oscar nom outta this next year. In the trailer he's got such a swank scumbag-promoter Heymanesque sleaze thing going for him, a detestable lack of morals coupled with an admirable dedication to his life's work. I seriously think this could outdo the LotR movies in terms of quality.

I was excited about it until I saw the trailer. There should've been a buildup to the Kong reveal, but they decided to show it early and it didn't look good. The effects looked pretty damn uneven...nowhere near those in Jurassic Park, which came out in what, 1993? Jack Black doesn't interest me in the slightest. Adrian Brody looks even less manly than Pee Wee Herman. What's to like about the trailer? The only scene in there that looked even remotely cool was with the giant insects. Everything else looked nice (even the 30's look stolen from Dick Tracy), but didn't seem to have any substance.

Of course, I don't know why I expected anything different from Peter Jackson. Sure LOTR was successful, but the only film in the series which was a great film was Fellowship of the Ring. Hopefully someday soon he'll make his own film and we'll see what kind of storyteller he is...

OK, there is an argument to be made that Peter Jackson's work is that of someone who takes someone elses ideas and reimagines them. Meet the Feebles as a porn version of the Muppet Show for instance or the Frighteners as a carny/con-man version of Ghostbusters.

Then again the Brothers Grimm is as much a re-telling of Ghostbusters as the Frighteners is and they are two completely different films.

I would submit that Peter Jackson has been telling his own stories for a loooooong time. Part of being a great story-teller is the ability to re-tell other people's stories and to make them fresh.

And as the mocumentary Forgotten Silver shows, Peter Jackson is motivated by a love for the movies. Like Joe Dante, his films quote other movies. (Like say Gremlins for instance) When it is done well, to hate that is to hate movies.

(Not that that was PDJ's point because he seems to think that Peter Jackson just appeared out of nowhere in situ to do the LOTR series.)

Llakor: Nah, I know he's made his own films. What I should've clarified is that now he's in a position where he can do anything he wants, and what he wants to do is a remake? LOTR was a huge undertaking, but he had far too many people all over him for it to fail. It was as good as it was because he stuck to his guns and fought for three films, instead of one two and a half hour movie.

Now is the time to really see what PJ is made of. I hope he doesn't pull a Kevin Smith and get scared to actually test himself. Of course, with the talk of PJ adapting The Hobit in a few years, maybe we'll never really see what he has to offer...
