So, i saw an ad on CBS saying they are going to have Kimbo Slice vs Ken Shamrock in a live fight. I guess the league is called EliteXC.

I found the card here Click Here (elitexc.com)

Anyone know anything about this promotion? The fight intrigues me because it has big names, one is a hack one is past his prime, and it could be a trainwreck, but I love to watch Kimbo.

I'll probably forget it's on.

This is the third (and final?) CBS "Saturday Night Fights" card. Click on the EXC icon to find our previous threads about the other two cards, some Showtime events and other whatnot that's come up here.

I talked to Ken Pishna from MMAWeekly recently and this fight and the Lesnar fight came up:

Based on what I saw from the first Sat. night broadcast, this is do or die for Kimbo. He has to win and win dominantly. Otherwise, everyone will say he's nothing but internet hype, like Houston Alexander.

Is it wrong that the thing that most concerns me is if Gina Carano makes weight for her fight? I think she is maybe the best thing EliteXC has going media-wise, even more so than Kimbo, and she can more than back it up from what I saw in her last match.

If you're thinking about tuning in for this tonight...there's word coming out that Ken hurt himself, and that the fight is likely off.

If this is true, this could be the death knell for EXC.

And now he is officially out:

Ken Shamrock had a previous cut opened over his eye when training last night with Dan Freeman, a long-time training partner (his bodybuilder assistant coach in Ultimate Fighter) and Freeman accidentally head-butted him.

It has gone back and forth all day, with Shamrock in and out now three different times during the day. Elite XC sources have just announced Shamrock was not medically cleared to compete. There is no answer as to what will happen in the main event.

Frank Shamrock, all dressed to announce, is awaiting word as it is very possible he will face Slice. Slice's people had not agreed to Seth Petruzelli as of a few minutes ago. Frank Shamrock is a different issue due to the weight difference and the fact Frank has not trained for the fight.

Well, if that was the last CBS show, it was a heck of a way to go out.

Holy hammering beatdown, Batman! Kimbo's whole mystique (and EliteXC as a whole) crumbled mightly quickly against Petruzelli (14 seconds). That was a f'n brutal attack on Slice and I don't see him recovering his career from that.

The whole televised card was an OK event to watch. But even before the main event debacle, I thought I saw the writing on the wall. Horrible interviewing by CBS reporters and even worse referring (especially the ref of the Carano/ Kobald fight) just made EliteXC look amateurish at times. It also doesn't help EliteXC's case to get another date on CBS when certain sizeable portions of the broadcast keep getting muted with all the profanity in the ring. I don't mind it myself, but I don't see any national network outside of cable or PPV willing to deal with that.

That was free and I still felt robbed.

Brutal beatdown? Really? Kimbo shouldn't be going down like that, but come on ... I don't watch that much MMA, but would that have been called so quickly if it weren't network tv?

Whoever the announcer in the pink tie was is total garbage and must be the company man.

I feel dirty after watching this

Hey, if nothing else, we all learned tonight the EXtreme danger of cuts above the eye!

I think the ref ruled that Kimbo was unable to defend himself. He sure didn't look like he was doing much.

Yeah, I won't claim to be an expert on MMA, but I'm sure that it would still be called quickly, even if it was UFC, Pride, or some other card. Kimbo kept getting blows repeatly without being able to counter or protect his head. You could see that he clearly was bloodied up and was unable to stop Petruzelli's punches at all. You don't have to be totally K.O.'ed to have the fight stop: if the ref feels you are unable to keep your opponent's attacks from hurting you, he'll step in before you really get hurt. I think that's a good thing: it's one of the reasons I think UFC and others can point to in saying why they're safer than boxing.

Besdies, if anything, you could tell that the ref was stoping the beatdown rather late, not early. He knows Kimbo is XC's cashcow and he wasn't going to stop the fight (and basically kill off the company) unless he was sure that there was no way to him to recover. To me, if it was anyone else, the ref would had likely stepped in about 3-5 seconds earlier. At least I felt he should had for Kimbo's safety, but like I said earlier, I thought the refs sucked balls tonight.

It absolutely would have. Kimbo Slice is 99% hype and image, and tonight he got exposed for the phony he is. Was. Whatever. He got pummeled and couldn't defend himself, so the fight got stopped. The end.

That's Mauro Ranallo. Couldn't hear him tonight but I've never had any kind of problem with him.

I wish you were correct but the **REMATCH**, that will happen, (or Shamrock/Slice) will draw more people to watch this either on CBS or PPV. A news source had it right that when Shamrock went out, Kimbo would actually have to face a real opponent & by far his toughest test.

I think if I read correctly, Shamrock had not won a MMA this decade.

BTW: Petruzelli was actually a light-heavyweight.

Main event aside, this was actually a pretty solid card. Jake Shields is a legit top-caliber WW, and I only wish I could see how he would fare against the likes of Koscheck/Alves/Sanchez/Fitch or some of the other second-tier UFC welters.

EXC's next card features some more quality fights involving Robbie Lawler, and what could be a very entertaining Alvarez/Diaz battle. The overall talent level of this org is decent, but their problem is they're promoting sideshows like Kimbo as their main events. It's not unlike pro wrestling, really --- the talented lightweights get shunted aside in favour of the 'monster' heavyweights.

How is it that I am a good actor? What I do is I... pretend to be the person Im portraying. Youre confused. Case in point: in Lord of the Rings, Peter Jackson comes to me and says I would like you to be Gandalf the Wizard, and I said You are aware that I am not really a wizard? and Peter Jackson said I would like you to use your acting skills to portray a wizard for the duration of the show. So I said Okay and then I said to myself Mmm.. How do I do that? And this is what I did: I imagined that I was a wizard, and then I pretended, and acted, in that way on the stage. How did I know what to say? The words were written down for me in a script. How did I know where to stand? People told me where to stand." -- Sir Ian McKellen, Extras

Too late.

Good show, but the only thing that would have made it better for UFC would have been if Nelson had beaten Arlovski, as that would have sank Affliction along with XC. Not only was this the worst-case scenario, this wasn't even a plausible scenario.

Ranallo has done some pro wrestling announcing in the past, and I believe in the last days of Al Tomko's promotion was a manager.

Could Kimbo look like he cared less than he did? the man looked like he'd rather be at home drinking beer. What a shame.

Silva vs. Hunt would be interesting, because from all I've ever read/heard/seen Hunt has a skull that Kaz Fujita would be jealous of. It could be dangerous for Silva if it stayed standing because Hunt hits as hard as anyone.
