If you are looking for something vaguely similar to Harry Potter, I would suggest The Chrestomanci Quartet by Dianna Wynne Jones. Good stuff.

Oh yeah, I don't know how many of those I had when I was a kid.
My 7yo really likes Dav Pilkey's Captain Underpants books. You really can't go wrong when you pull out the classic E.B. White books like Charlotte's Web, Stuart Little, and The Trumpet of the Swan.
I'd also second any recommendation for Lloyd Alexander's Prydain books as I remember those with great fondness. I actually found my old set from the mid70's and found them to be every bit as good as I remembered.
