You're right. How dare they accept a professional athlete's word. How dare they not stick it to him like they could have done. How dare they think they could all act like gentlemen.

When business operates like this, it usually ends up failing. As stated previously, the Karma gods will find him.

How dare anyone accept an owners word! What are you people thinking? If there is big money there you take it. Whether it's your $8.00 job going to a $9.00 hour job or a 8 million dollar a year job going to your 9 million a year job. You got to put *yourselves* in the man's shoes. Maybe you are all good people, but last time I checked we live in a Capitalist society. Don't hate the player for making himself better off. You'd do it too.

Actually, no. No, I wouldn't. When you're talking about that much money, what the hell's the big freakin' difference between $41 million and $65 million? (Just reciting those figures from memory, so I could be off.)

I mean, it's not as if the Cavaliers' offer meant that Carlos was gonna have to live off of jars of peanut-butter and live in a one-room flat with no air-conditioning. I mean, give me a fuckin' break. Financial security is financial security. Everything above that is just a dollar amount.

Now, would I lie to get financial security? Sure-- because I think that's something every American really wants. But once you've got it, there's just no point in lying to get more.

HE FLAT-OUT LIED TO GET INTO THE POSITION OF GETTING A TON OF DOUGH. I don't know how much clearer I can state this. Do you honestly feel that it is okay to lie to get ahead?

(edit - Holy cow, TS - your ethics scare me. I would never want to do business with you.)

I sat here and thought about that question for a couple of minutes trying to come up with a reason to say no, it's not okay. I just can't do that. I'm not sure he intended to bolt for the biggest dollar, but when it presented itself it's hard to turn down. To say that there is no difference in 40 million and 60 million is absurd. So, to answer your question I guess I do think it is okay to lie to get ahead.

Gund could have made him play the last year for peanuts. He attempted to do the best he was able to for him under the conditions of the cap. I agree that I would never do business with you.

Good Doctor, I'm sure you do business with people like TS all the time. There are PLENTY of people in the world who will sell YOU something for $8 when it's worth $5, just because you'll pay $8. This isn't REALLY all that different.

I really want to have a problem with the whole situation, but I can't. The Cavaliers knew TWO YEARS AGO when they made the contract this way that this situation could come up. You don't have a valuable asset of your team have a chance to leave after only two years, because you don't get the guy's Bird Rights. So they either didn't think or know Boozer was going to be THAT good and important to the team: it happens. (See Arenas, Gilbert.)

I can't believe that Gordon Gund listened to Jim Paxson explain that they shouldn't let Boozer out of the deal and did it anyway. That's just dumb. WHY are you paying Paxson to be the GM? Surely Paxson said "You know, if Boozer was, say, a Maverick and we had tons of cap room and could make an offer the Mavs couldn't match for a guy as good as Boozer, I'd try to make the offer and get the guy, and that's VERY LIKELY to happen to us."

Gund didn't likely deserve the emotional part of being "screwed over" by Boozer, but he DID make a HORRIBLE business decision for his organization and Boozer leaving is a direct result of that.

I agree it wasn't a smart business decision. I seek to avoid working with people like that as soon as I know what they are. I wouldn't say the Cavs are blameless but Boozer just plained sucked.

The worst part in all this happens the next time a situation comes up. The player may be perfectly honest but he won't be trusted. I guess I naively hoped there was some integrity left in the game.

And a quick quote from a friend of mine who's a Cavs fan:
I just figured out why Carlos wants #5. Draw a vertical line through the number 5 and you'll understand.
