I guess I should warn you that the rest of this mesage will contain spoilers.

SPOILERS!!

We started off the night with a nice dark match starring Nova! I jumped out of my seat and couldn't stop cheering once I realized they announced him from my hometown of Toms River, NJ. He crushed a random local talent with his Vertabreaker-esque finisher.

The Velocity tapings got underway with Jamie Noble beating a jobber and Chuck beating someone named Xavier with a vicious jungle kick. Shannon Moore lost to The Jet, Spanky with another gimick I guess, in a really great matchup. After these matches the shirt cannon guys came out and completely ignored my section of the audience and shot dozens of t-shirts to the television side. =P

Smackdown started off with Los Guerreros vs. Cena and B2. Chavo ended up winning with a frog splash in what I'm not sure was the actual finish since Eddy got hurt. Cena and B2 were outside and Chavo jumped over the ropes and they caught him him, so Eddy jumps onto all of them and they fall down, only Eddy didn't get back up for a loooong while. Cena and B2 got into a shoving match and some bald guy in a sweat suit ended up jumping out of the crowd to punk out B2 with Cena. After they went to break a bunch of Refs and Chavo helped carry Eddy to the back to a loud Eddy chant.

Next, Bill Demott said he wanted to prove that he didn't just pick on the little guys so he decided to pick on Rikishi. Demott won with a Powerbomb while Rikishi was setting him up for a Bonzai Drop. Nunzio gave us a house promo telling us our women smelled before his match against Tajiri. Nunzio won the match with his rediculously stupid Springboard Armbar Finisher after Nidia tried to distract Tajiri with a kiss only to get green misted~!

We got a Undertaker promo hyping his Royal Rumble return that ended with "The Bad Ass Returns", so I guess that he won't be bringing the deadman gimmick with him.

I guess I should mention that throughout the night we had to deal with the wonderful promos of Dawn Marie, it wasn't too bad though, since she was there to invite us all to Al Wilson's funeral! That got a lot of cheers from me and my friends. =)

Brock was next, with a mystery partner, against A-Train and The Big Show. I couldn't figure out who his mystery partner could be, until Rey Mysterio shot out from the Smackdown Stage. Brock and Rey rushed the ring, Brock ducks an A-Train clothesline and immediately gives him an F5. A-Train stumbles over to the ropes only to get a 619 from Rey Mysterio. He never got back up for the West Coast Pop so Rey just gave him a springboard splash and won the match in about 20 seconds. Hopefully this is the end of the A-Train push.

Matt Hardy fought Funaki next since earlier in the night, and later retaped due to how lame the original came out, Funaki tried to tell Shannon to stop taking Matt's BS which incited a brawl. Matt destroys Funaki in the beginning, but he begins to gain the upper hand. This brings Shannon up on the apron to hold Funaki's ankles while he attempts a top rope move which causes Billy Kidman to charge over to Shannon. In the ensuing confusion Matt whips Funaki into Moore, follows it with a Twist of Fate, and picks up the pinfall. Moore and Matt celebrate up on the stage with Moore jumping up and down shouting "We did it" over and over again so Matt punches him out. Good ol' Matt.

Team Angle and Kurt Angle teamed up in the main event to take on Edge and Benoit. Angle seems to be perfectly fine following his knee injury and everyone in this match gave a stellar performance. I'm not to clear on what happened at the end, either Angle tapped out to the Crossface or Benoit was disqualified because Angle wasn't the legal man, but I may have missed a tag in there. Afterwards, Benoit destroys Angle with his crutch and all is right in the world.

I think the tapings may have ended here because Brock Lesnar sprinted back out and tossed an escaping Angle back into the ring. F5 for Haas, F5 for Benjamin, F5 for Angle, Benoit blew some snot on Angle and then gave him a Swandive Headbutt, and Edge...umm...shoved Angle's crutch up Angle's ass.

All in all, a great Smackdown. I can't wait to see it on TV. I'll be the guy 15 rows back with the SMATTDown sign and the V1 sign, my friend held up an awesome Brock Lesnar sign she drew of his tattoo.

They really tried their best not to do anything to make people want to buy the Rumble PPV in any way. The names they said will enter from Smackdown are Biker-Taker, A-Train, Benjamin, Haas, and the Big Show/Brock winner. Once again 5 Al/Dawn segments hurt the show, I give it thumbs down.

Benoit dominating Angle to end the show before the PPV means Angle retains.

El Pescado beat me to the punch, but here are my live spoiler notes anyway.

This post contains spoilers, so don’t read it if you don’t want to be spoiled.

*

The Card:
1 - Los Guerreros vs. Cena & B2
2 - Rikishi vs. Bill DeMott
3 - Nunzio vs. Tajiri
4 – Big Show & A-Train vs. Brock Lesnar & Mystery Partner
5 – Matt Hardy vs. Funaki
6 – Angle, Benjamin, & Haas vs. Benoit & Edge

Live Notes:

The arena was packed more than for any games with the First Place Nets. Tickets in this NY/NJ area sell quick and the show sold out quick. The fans here are much quieter than MSG fans, but they didn’t give us much to cheer over either so don’t blame the crowd.

The shirts selling were Undertaker - new, Scott Steiner – new, Triple H, Rey, Edge, Angle, and a few vendors selling Mattitude. Kids were buy the Rey and Edge shirts a lot. The new Undertaker shirt is red with a fist…looks stupid to me. All the talk of the Undertaker returning as the original Undertaker is BS. He’s coming back as the Biker-Taker, guaranteed.

New Rumble Entries: Taker, A-Train, Benjamin, and Haas. Also either Brock or Big Show.

Good: Al Wilson is Dead!
Bad: We had to sit through 5 skits with Dawn moaning about how Al had died. Opening face picture of Al Wilson with dates underneath. It was played straight and somber until the crowd was deader than Al. Part of the show took place in a funeral home – too bad they got rid of Paul Bearer. Here is some sample dialogue from Dawn-Marie talking to Al’s corpse in casket, “Why did you have to die? Why did you have to leave me? Why? Why? Because you killed him you stupid bitch! The crowd enjoyed my one-liners better than all the skits.
Ugly: Dawn kissing Al inside the casket. Just what I was saying the other day, “Smackdown needs more Necro.”

Fashion Sense:
Good: Dawn is wearing a Stephanie’s black witches dress from the Halloween Smackdown.
Bad: Stephanie is wearing a tepid black outfit.
Ugly: Al is buried in his tacky 70’s suit.

Velocity

The opener was a dark match, but I missed it. I was told it was a nothing match between two little guys.

Jamie Noble pinned a jobber, finisher was not memorable.

Shannon Moore got pinned by a masked Jersey wrestler called “the Jet.” Finisher was a modified Acid Drop – like Spike Dudley off the ropes only with a sleeper drop instead of the diamond cutter finish.

Chuck Palumbo beat a small jobber – name sounded like Excaliber. He used the Jungle Kick for the finish.

Holy Sh*t – Move of the Night: Palumbo picked up the little guy for a powerbomb, ran into the corner and dropped him so the back of his head bounced off the top turnbuckle. It’s worth taping Velocity just for this one move.

Rank of Crowd Heat

Face Pops:
1 – Brock Lesner, by a big margin.
2 – Edge, during his entrance. Benoit, during their match.
3 – Rey, during entrance.
4 – Rikishi, during entrance.

Heel Heat:
1 – Kurt Angle, by a big margin.
2 – The Shirt Guy. He missed so many sections of the crowd. Got some huge “You Suck” chants. Most of the crowd wanted to beat the crap out of this guy in real life.
3 – Paul Heyman. In response to his in ring speech. A-Train and the Big Show entrance got no response, but his pre-match speech drew some heat.
4 – Dawn-Marie Wilson. “Not Again” was the common response to seeing one of her show dominating skits.

The first match was Eddie and Chavo vs. Cena and B2. Cena gave a rap dissing latinos for selling oranges on the highway. Then he tore into the Giants and their 1986 Tight End, Mark Bavaro. Had he dissed Phil McConky, I’d be pissed. B2 was more over than Cena. His “BOOYA” catchphrase inspired many chants of “BOOYA” during the match. Chavo dove with a cross body onto the rappers on the outside but was caught. Eddie jumped into the pile and everyone went down. Chavo got the finish by using Eddie’s frog splash to pin B2. Cena and B2 came to blows, splitting up the team. An unknown rapper (B3?) came out to help Cena by running B2 into the post on the outside. Eddie was injured (from the jump into pile). He was helped to the back by 4 refs to a classy “Eddie” chant.

Nunzio vs. Tajiri was an OK match. His match with Noble last week was better. Tajiri used kicks and Nunzio worked on the arm. A mild “ECW” chant. Nidia’s kiss distraction was countered by Tajiri’s green mist and Nunzio used a weak springboard armbreaker for the upset win. I still say Tajiri is the #1 underrated guy in the WWE, the crowd oohs and ahhs at each of his kicks and the flipping back elbow.

The Good:

Big Show & A-Train vs. Brock Lesnar & Rey Mysterio

This was a good match, but way too short. Brock hits A-Train with an F5. Rey gets the 619 on A-Train, Big Show bails. Rey hits A-Train with a splash and gets the win in under one minute.

Trish Stratus - video She did a swimsuit promo to the sound of Sheryl Crow’s “Soak Up the Sun.” It hyped Divas Undressed. It was the best promo of the night, which isn’t saying much.

The Bad:

Matt Hardy vs. Funaki

This feud resulted from Matt taking issue with a Funaki interview. Funaki hit the 2nd rope Christian Drop. But, Matt hit the Twist of Fate for the pin. I don’t know how Funaki got hired to wrestle. He must secretly know a lot of kicks that we don’t get to see.

Everyting invoving Al/Dawn

The Ugly:

Rikishi vs. Bill DeMott was a crappy match between two fat-asses. Rikishi had one of the biggest entrance pops of the night. Bill gave a short speech and got the only huge “What” chants for the night. Rikishi looked to move like a cruiser next to Bill. Rikishi went for the second rope banzai drop and Bill countered into a powerbomb for the finish.

Match of the Night:

Kurt Angle, Benjamin, & Haas vs. Edge & Benoit (3 on 2)

The crowd was into this match. The loudest chant of the night was the “You Suck” chant towards Angle. A very small “We Want Angle” chant was hardly heard. Benoit got the crossface on Angle and wouldn’t release it even when Kurt tapped. So, either Benoit got the win by submission or Angle got the DQ win. I can’t tell which, but I do know that Angle wasn’t the legal man…if that still means anything. Edge did a nice top rope dive to the outside on top of Team Angle. Benoit’s crossface is great when he pulls it out of left field.

It may not have made TV, but next Angle and his Team bail out, but their exit is blocked off by Brock Lesner. Benjamin, Haas, and Angle all take an F5. The snot-blowing Benoit hits a nice top rope kamakazee headbutt on Angle. Edge hits him with the crutch and we are out. Angle whines some more. After we all leave the building Dawn hits Torrie in the funeral home with something that looked to me like a bucket of ice. The End.

Unsung Hero: Brock Lesnar is already sung, but nobody else stepped it up this week. Brock hit F5s on everyone and was the only guy that was really over.

Exclusive NJ Promos Nunzio talked about how Jersey smelled - he’s right about the Turnpike. Haas said even though he’s went to Seton Hall, he hates the Sopranoes. Benjamin said the Giants and Jets both suck.

Bottom Line: The show was not as bad as Raw, but I liked last week’s Smackdown much better. You would think they’d do something to make people want to buy the Rumble, but they didn’t. This is the last show before the Rumble and it did nothing to sell it. Too much Al Wilson for my tastes. They should’ve had a mini-Rumble to end the show. I think they are taking the focus off the actual Rumble match to turn it into a generic PPV. I wouldn’t have gone to the show, but it was in Jersey and I was home in bed by 10:20 so I shouldn’t complain.

I was surprised to see, when checking my usual wrestling news haunts, Smackdown spoilers. I guess the SD crew's going to appear on the Raw anniversary special on Tuesday.

- Velocity may be worth checking out because the jobber that Noble beat was none other than indy star and DVDarling American Dragon. He's impressed me in the little I've seen of him. Damn; between him, Xavier, and Spanky/Chilly Willy, I've actually had to start recording Velocity in the last two weeks!

- Besides possibly marking the end of A-Train's push, this show might also signal the waning days of B-2 Buchanan. And just when I figured out what exactly 'bling-bling' means... However, I know I shouldn't get excited about possibly never seeing the hairy nugget or Bull again.

- Of all the problems with the Dawn/Torrie/Al saga, the one that annoys me the most is the knowledge that we're being put through the taffy machine of all this for, if we go by general and sensible booking practices, an ultimate triumph and revenge for Torrie. I'm sorry, but the woman has less personality and charisma than Al will when he's shoot dead. The fact that the expected destination of this arduous journey is MORE mannequin screen time makes having to sit in a filthy '84 station wagon with no air conditioning while your mother plays her Starland Vocal Band cassette on a loop THAT much more scarring.

Hopefully, Eddie and Chavo go into an angle with Team Angle, or else the face turn for Eddie is wasted. Does this mean Bull Buchanan is going to get a face push, or are they going to use him to team with Rikishi and try to recreate the Too Cool elements. Why kill Al when they could have killed all 3 at once (or at least Torrie in the process), thus triple the payoff and no screwing with a PPV. Its almost as if Vince is selling the Rumble PPV on the Torrie/Dawn Marie angle instead of the Rumble match itself, which is up there on brilliant ideas with the WBF the XFL and the Lex Express.

A few more notes:

-Dawn smashed Torrie with a lamp while she was crying over her fathers casket. While it wasn't great to have so much Dawn/Al in our evening, it was great to see that we probably won't have to deal with them anymore.

-The guy Jamie Noble fought in his first match was horrible. I think they called him Ryan Danielson or something. He was really really pale and wore the worst tighty whitie wrestling trunks ever. He didn't impress me at all.

-The Jet owns. So does Nova. I wonder why Nova got to use his Vertebreaker-esque finisher while the Hurricane has to use a Shining Wizard as a finisher.

-Palumbo's Velocity opponent used a 450 Splash at one point, but Palumbo moved out of the way. He looked pretty impressive, but not as impressive as Palumbo's turnbuckle powerbomb. I've only seen that move in videogames until now.
-After being annoyed by people chanting "What" forever, I must say that chanting "What" at Bill DeMott was really fun. I can't stand that guy.

-The Turnpike really does suck. I'm glad I live in central Jersey, I didn't really understand why everyone kept giving house promos saying NJ smelled until we were on the way home. Yech.

Hello!
I was with El Pescado the whole night, and another one of us that had to be succumed to the horridness that is the Al/Dawn skits.
I think whoever said that this is all a push for Toorie is correct. Undfortunately for us, it's far from over as I see it.
I had to laugh when Dawn slapped Torrie in the last skit. The face Torrie made made it minimally entertaining.

This being my first wrestling event ever, I was just ahppy to be there. I must say it wasn't all that entertaining, despite that. And that's saying a lot. I'm usually pretty lienient when it comes to my first time seeing/doing something.

I must say on behalf of the NOT gross part of New Jersey where El Pescado and I are from; not ALL of new Jersey smells like that! lol. Or looks like that either... Geeze... It actually makes me sorta glad I live down here. And THAT'S saying a WHOLE lot.

The shirt shooting guy gets my "heel of the night" vote. That guy was an ass, and shot shirts to one of 3 sections the wole time. 3 out of what, 10? Gimme a break, and learn how to shoot. lol

I was annoyed cuz I had created the best signs there, and i dont think they ever showed them on camera. If anyone contests me and says "I bet my signs are better" you havent seen my signs. I put more work into it than just a marker and a flourescent piece of posterboard. GRR damn those camera guys!

I have to ask Skorpio17- are you the guy that kept yelling "BooYAH!" the whole night behind el pescado and I? Just wondering. lol

You'd be one of the few unimpressed the last two years by him, his name is Bryan Danielson, and until recently, he was touring all over the country as The American Dragon. He's the other graduate of HBK's school that gets all the press, and just did a tour of New Japan last month.

If American Dragon is the "other graduate" then who was the first one, I am not aware of this fact.

I don't know what's going on. The Jet was very impressive in his match with Shannon Moore, but The American Dragon seemed really boring. If someone hadn't said something I would have never suspected he graduated from HBK's Wrestling School. I don't want to blame Jamie Noble for the boring match since I like him so much, but maybe it was his fault.

Does American Dragon always wrestle in those ridiculous tighty whities?

Maybe it's just because they were passing through the area, but it was pretty nice of WWE to give the RING OF HONOR guys a chance to shine on Velocity. I'm already hearing good things about Jamie Noble's match with American Dragon. And it should be noted that WWE had American Dragon under a developmental deal not too long ago before they cut him, which shows what an AWESOME eye for talent they have. Yeah, who needs American Dragon when you've got 3 Minute Warning and Batista who are BIG and...uh...BIG!

On the other hand, I also heard Chuck Palumbo completely squashed Xavier (who is the Ring of Honor champion), which makes me wonder if this was a case of ego-stroking on the part of Vince. Maybe I'm just being too cynical on that one.

Y'know, maybe I'm just an idiot. I could have sworn that the Noble/Dragon match stunk. Maybe I was paying too much attention to my hotdog and camera during the match to get the full effect...

But yeah, Palumbo totally squashed Xavier. Xavier did do a 450 splash, but Palumbo moved out of the way. Xavier did counter a powerbomb with a hurricarana, but I think he was pretty much squashed the rest of the time. Hell of a Jungle Kick by Chuck too.

A few things I’d like to clear up about the Smackdown taping. I heard other recaps say that the building was empty and the crowd was dead.

The first thing is that the building was as close to a sell-out as you can get. I called ticketmaster 10 days before the show and spent 20 minutes looking for decent seats. I barely got any. The only seats empty were the cheap seats way up at the top four rows near the ceiling. At 8:30, I walked around trying to upgrade my seats, but every single seat was shoulder to shoulder, nothing was empty.

As for the crowd being dead, what do you expect, all the Dawn skits killed it. Don’t blame the crowd. The crowd was into Brock and Team Angle everything else was no-sold. I heard one recap say the crowd was into Matt Hardy, but I didn’t hear anything like that.

The good thing about the silence is that you could almost carry on a conversation with a fan at the other side of the arena. The “Booya” guy gets my vote as fan of the night. I am not that guy, I was sitting in Section 105, a few sections over. I was picking my spots to yell during the Dawn skits. It was easy because the silence was overwhelming and it was an easy target. They wouldn’t have tried to pull that crap in MSG, because the rowdy MSG crowd would’ve given a “Shut the F*ck Up!” chant in response.

The split really sucks for house shows. For a PPV, you pay $35, but still see all the stars. For a Smackdown or Raw show, you still pay $35, but you only see half the stars. Then again now you pay $35, to only see half a Rumble so everything gets cut in half.

If one recap said the crowd was into Matt Hardy he must have been in our section. Me and my group of friends are raging MFers. We had 6 signs, 3 were for Matt, and we cheered for Matt and Shannon Moore as loud as we could.
The Booyah Guy is most certainly NOT fan of the night, the guy was a gigantic pain in the ass. How would you like to have a fat, drunken, idiot screaming BOOYAH into your ear during every freakin' match? It's not fun. Eventually some people did tell him to "Shut the hell up", but it only got his friends to start Booyah-ing too... -_-
