A WWE/UFC organizated angle just seems too intriguing not to ponder...
Why would UFC do that? Their fans watch for the realness of the sport. Aligning w/ a "fake" sport would most likely only serve to alienate many of their fans. And most wrestling fans wouldn't care for UFC. Lose/lose situation, IMO.

| #22 Posted on 13.10.05 0047.18 | Instant Rating: 5.56 | Maybe I've been reading everything wrong the last few days, but do most people (not just here, but on a lot of sites) really think that Monday night was Linda *actually* firing Jim Ross? Or at least that the guy was really fired pre-show and this was the way they choose to write him off the show? And then after being fired that he would do an interview for them on their webpage? I keep seeing posts from different, "smart" places from people saying "How dare they treat him like this! He deserves better!" Then I figure they just wanted him to go out on top, until I read something that looks like the person really thinks you can get fired like he did, kick in the nuts and all. The guy's still a major part of the company even if his official duties are being scaled back.
I figured this was just to get him off tv, maybe to come back later with Austin, maybe not, but now it's starting to seem like 1996 all over again when everyone thought that Owen Hart had really knocked Michaels out cold.
No one in wrestling gets to do the 10 minute thankful as a farewell. It would be nice if a whole shitload of people got to do it, but it's just not going to happen. Vince's Hall of Fame is the closest thing to that that you're going to get.
Jim Ross went off tv doing what is done in the business that he loves. He went out while putting over the people that were his peers. Wrestlers put over other wrestlers, and "on air talent" put over other "on air talent" on his way out to give the McMahon Reunion a moment that they could hopefully take off on.

The idea, as I understand it, was that Ross wasn't legit fired on TV, but he WAS written out of the show with no plans to ever bring him back. Plans can change, and this whole thing may just be an angle, but everyone (wrestlers, Meltzer, Ross himself unless he's keeping quiet) is operating under the assumption that Ross is done as an on-camera performer. Furthermore, I don't think Ross has a whole lot of backstage duties anymore. He used to be the head of Talent Relations, but that's Johnny Ace's job now. So who knows - maybe they'll just pay him to sit at home until his contract is done. If that's all true and he's really more or less finished with WWE, then yeah, I can see why people would want him to go out in a better way.
Personally, I don't hate the idea of a shakeup of the announce team, but I don't know who you'd bring in. Romero and Grisham are awful. Josh Mathews is great on Velocity, but that's only because it's Velocity and nobody in charge at WWE gives a shit about what he says. Bring Mathews to Raw (or make him lead SD play-by-play announcer with Tazz) and he won't be allowed to talk about American Strong Style or reference Benoit/Regal at the Pillman memorial show or shout "shades of Pokerface!" or what have you.
For that matter, whoever they bring out to replace JR is going to get shit on by the fans for not being JR. It might almost be a good idea, at least in the short term, to have Coach as lead play-by-play man, since people will hate whoever gets that spot. Lawler can fully turn face and keep the colour job. Far from ideal, but maybe the best possible solution given the circumstances.
(an aside: the spellchecker doesn't recognize "Meltzer," "Grisham," "Tazz," or "Pillman," but it lets "Pokerface" slide?)

And exactly what is the reason that the McMahons needed to be put over? Are they trying to get a pop from the share-holders or something? I'm sorry, there's absolutely zero need for the McMahons to "take off" especially at the apparent expense of a loyal, respected employee. Though it is definitely a work in at least many regards, Vince really seems to get off on treating Ross like a dog in the show. For his part, Ross, who may think he has sacrificed himself for what's right for business should have put his foot down ages ago- because let's face it, his humiliation has never been what's right for business, just terribly unnecessary for it.

You'd be hard pressed to describe Lawler as a heel announcer at the moment, even after he didn't refuse to apologise to Vince. When was the last time he did something heelish? Saying how impressive Chris Masters' entrance is every week doesn't really set the world on fire with hatred for him. Yet he can't really be a full on face announcer anyway since he's so unbelievably annoying. How many people would honestly care if King was the one kicked in the nads on Monday?
Plus there's the fact he's no spring chicken himself, if they're trying to shake up the announce team for a younger audience he needs to go too. | Oliver

Just read this on a column. You would think that the timing leads you to think the firing was an angle, it said as much.
We wish JR a speedy recovery and hope he's back where he belongs soon.

I had this weird out of body experience vision where Vince , instead of doing Tough Enough or Diva contests, does an ''Announce Or Bounce'' competition..whereby each week we have tryhards coming on to do the play by play and at the end VKM hands them a 1 year contract. And JR hands the winner his hat
