ESPN reporting that the White Sox traded Jon Garland to the Angels for Orlando Cabrera and cash considerations.

Unless that cash is significant I hate the deal. I never actually like the deal, but I would hate it less if I thought it freed up a bunch of money.

Angels fans? Thoughts?

As an Angels fan, I absolutely hate this deal.

Boston fans know that Orlando Cabrera is one of the most likable guys in the league. Hell, when he comes to Fenway in a visitor's uniform, he still gets a huge pop from the fans. He's liked about as much here in Anaheim and this move won't go over well at all.

This isn't even without mentioning that this doesn't address the Angels' biggest concern. It doesn't get us the big bat we need. If anything, it SUBTRACTS a big bat from our roster, because Cabrera was about as good as it gets from the #2 spot. He had his best year, hitting-wise, ever last year, nearly competing for a batting title until the wheels came off somewhat at the end.

Meanwhile, Garland is coming off a terrible year and there's no indicator that it was just a fluke. He's not a #1 guy and while I realize he isn't supposed to be, that just reinforces the point further that he's not worth trading one of our best players for.

Between losing out on A-Rod and now losing one of our most popular guys, this offseason is NOT off to a good start.

Does this move maybe open up the door to the Angels packaging some young pitching and other prospects to make a play for Miguel Cabrera?

Are the Angels trading one Cabrera for another? If they do get Miguel it would be a great offseason.

I'd like to have Miguel Cabrera, but it still doesn't ease the pain of losing a guy that knows how to get on base.

But as for the addition of Garland, as least he fills the void left by Bartolo Colon. Of course, at this point, a cheese sandwich can fill the void left by Bartolo Colon.

Not for long, as Bartolo would quickly wolf down the cheese sandwich.

Sadly, rumors now have the White Sox making a play for Big Bart.

Unless they have another move for a big bat to make, this isn't a good move for the Angels. The White Sox are getting a free swinging shortstop who hits .280, bats second and plays Gold Glove defense to replace a free swinging shortstop who hits .220 and doesn't play defense. The way Garland absolutely imploded the last 3 months of the season might be a sign that he isn't healthy or he got financial security and doesn't give a damn anymore.

Two things:

1. The only thing Uribe has going for him anymore is defense. When he decides to be motivated he's still a top-flight defensive SS.

2. Garland was experiencing some sort of "knot" in his shoulder last year...I wonder if this is Freddy Garcia Part 2.

http://www.jsonline.com/story/index.aspx?id=477507 Not real thrilled about sending Nelson Cruz along in the deal, but it appears Lee wasn't going to re-sign in Milwaukee. He rejected a 4 yr/$48 million deal last night.
