I was (and still am) very skeptical about taking the Metroid franchise to the big screen. But lord knows this franchise has a very compelling storyline and has the potential to be a blockbuster. (Come on! Who WOULDN'T want to see a larger-than-life big screen version of Ridley?)
Speaking as someone who saw the Mission Impossible films as mediocre efforts, I'm really hoping Woo can bring the goods on this one.
And hey, it can't be any worse than the Super Mario Bros. movie...can it?

While getting the X-ray goggles or charge beam in the game may have been a plot device, as well it should in a video game, it may seem contrived and hokey on the big screen.
Basically, the Metroid movie will get trounced by critics and fans no matter what, because it can not be the video game on the big screen. It can not convey the same sense of drama found in video games, in that you might ultimately fail and die. See; Final Fantasy, Resident Evil, Super Mario Bros., Street Fighter, Mortal Kombat, MK Annihilation, Surf Ninjas, etc.
(EDIT) My friend tells me that Super Mario Bros. is great after huffing glue.

The exception being the first MK film, which is why it is perfectly watchable. Really, all fans want is to be told the same story they already know. If Woo can do this, the film should be alright. | Nate The Snake

There's no way they can capture what made the Metroids so awesome, the exploration and the "must find more STUFF" feeling that it inspires. I'm afraid it'll wind up being yet another lone-hero-versus-horrible-aliens movie, the only difference being the Nintendo logo somewhere on the poster.
PLEASE prove me wrong, Mr. Woo.

Hopefully it will be a true Woo movie and have his style on it.

Who are they going to cast as Samus? Jessica Alba comes to mind.
And I dont know how they are going to incorporate the game story and gear but they better have the Screw Attack.

The Metroid series is all about you being Samus, all alone in a very foreign atmostphere. There is no talking, no real interaction between people. It is you and a whole bunch of funny looking creatures.
This just won't ever work, and if it does, it will either be nothing like the video games(which would make it not a Metroid film), or I'll eat my hat.
