From ESPN.com:

SALT LAKE CITY -- Utah Jazz guard John Stockton, the NBA's all-time assist leader, said Friday that he plans to retire after 19 seasons.

Stockton met with Jazz owner Larry Miller and coach Jerry Sloan and told them he was not planning to return for a 20th season.

"I think I'm finished,'' Stockton said. "I informed those guys and that's the direction I'm headed. I just said, 'I think it's time to move on.'''

The Jazz's stonefaced leader who never seemed to age continued to excel late in his career at a position that usually chases players away by their early 30s.

Stockton even spent his last few seasons trotting the ball up the court past a handful of former opponents who retired long ago and are coaching.

Well, another era ended. Have to agree with the Sports Guy and say that there was nobody who did greatness so dull like Stockton and Malone.

By the way, Storm's gimmick includes 1.) telling the audience to shut up, and 2.) occasionally making everyone stand for the Canadian national anthem. You know they don't know what to do with a wrestler when he's making fans stand for a national anthem. It's like waving a white flag and saying, "This guy has no personality -- we give up."

Nice to see a classy player go out in a classy way. Slightly different than the media hand wringing over whether the world would collapse when someone else decided to pull his third retirment trick.

The following post expresses the opinions of a raving Jerichoholic. He is biased, opinionated and bitter. You have been warned.

Now the question becomes: Will Carl Malone come back? I don't know his situation, but I thought that he and Stockton were staying in the game to see if they could win a championship.

As of Monday, April 21 at 12:55 AM, the Boston Red Sox' Magic Number to clinch the AL East is 147. A combination of 147 Red Sox wins and New York Yankees losses will guarantee the AL East for the Boston Red Sox.

Their window of winning the championship together closed when Michael made the shot to seal title #6. They're not getting any younger, their role players are at the most a joke and at the least not good enough to balance their attack, and the good free agents out there aren't busting the doors down to come to Salt Lake City. If Malone comes back, I think he'll press for a trade to a championship contender.

I kind of wish Malone retires now, too.

It'd just be too weird to have Malone in the game, but Stockton not around. That being said, if he does come back, I agree with Swordsman - you know he's going to demand a trade.

I was hoping that Malone and Stockton would both sign with the Lakers for $1 million, thus guaranteeing themselves a ring.

Would they mind the critics saying "You had to ride on Shaq and Kobe's coattails to get that ring"?

True, but I don't think you could fairly compare the careers and roles of Stockton and Malone to Devean George.

I wouldn't call it 'riding Shaq and Kobe's coattails,' exactly. Stockton and Malone would finally give LA some depth. Imagine one of the best point guards of all time and one of the best power forwards of all time added to that roster...they might challenge Chicago's wins record.

I think David Robinson (and maybe Oscar also), not Devon George, is the appropriate comparison here.

Stockton entered the NBA a year ahead of Malone, so maybe it's proper that Malone stays a season longer. Perhaps a trade to New Orleans to be closer to home?

... I'd like to see Malone come to L.A., if he can keep his ego in check and understand he's the third scoring option -- and that he'll be counted on more for defense and boards than for baskets. But, yeah, Malone's in good shape and works hard. He's certainly that "enforcer"-type player that Shaquille spoke of a few years back when he wanted the Lakers to get Charles Oakley.

Malone in the hills of Hollywood? Very hard to picture that. Malone wouldn't want to be in the shadow of The Shaq and Kobe Show if one of his goals is to break Jabbar's scoring record. I think Phil Jackson would likely favor bringing in Scottie Pippen instead since they would be reunited from the heyday of the Bulls.

I've also heard San Antonio and Dallas as other options. Dallas would probably be more likely of the two, as Cuban is always willing to spend if it means loading up the roster. SA probably wouldn't take to him very well after all those years of thuggery against them plus that Tim Duncan guy is doing all right at the 4. Their focus this summer will likely be to pry Jermaine O'Neal from Indiana instead.

true, mr yen, but considering that you guys have duncan, wouldn't you rather see Kidd (who's a free agent, and has that san antonio rumor going on) be on the spurs?

after all, imagine what he'd do for your team.

and speaking of jermaine o'neil, here's hoping that the sixers can get him on the team, cause Coleman's only got like 2 seasons at best left.

The Spurs like to play Duncan at the four, and with Robinson leaving, that opens up a hole at the five. O'neal is very capable in the middle, and having the two of them would give them another Twin-Towers type situation. I'd say Parker is aquitting himself quite nicely this postseason. In addition to that, he's younger, and cheaper than kidd. With Manu developing, Parker with another year under his belt, and potentially Duncan and O'Neal down low...that would be a very scary lineup.
