| #1 Posted on 31.5.05 1008.51 | Instant Rating: 3.04 | Apparently, WWE.Com is sending out an email claiming that MTV refuses to air Cena's "Bad Bad Man" video ... Now, they're using the "It's Too Hot for MTV" tagline to (obviously) drum up interest, a la the Ruck Fules "controversy" on UPN, but there doesn't seem to be anything totally outrageous in that video that would justify such a banning (at least, not that I can remember).
Plus, the album seemed to do fairly well (number three on the rap charts in its debut, right), so lack of popularity can't be an issue ... So, what's the real story here? Anyone hear anything?
For those that don’t know, the Tiger Mask character was based on a Japanese cartoon, so Misawa stepping out of that and becoming the best wrestler in his country would be kind of like Chris Benoit doing a Darkwing Duck gimmick and then becoming the Chris Benoit we all mark over. - AWC

It's the gunplay. MTV banned it in videos after Tupac and Biggie died. Cena copped to it in an interview a few weeks back on BET, I believe.
IIRC, the last video featuring someone firing a gun that MTV dealt with the Jay-Z "99 Problems" video, and that one was relegated to PM-viewing only and some MTV2 rotation.

Oh and the fact that MTV doesn't air videos anymore.

Ever seen an Eminem video? There was nothing in here nearly as lame as riding a turd.

MTV, or whichever cousin of it airs videos, will air anything, please don't kid yourself. Are you telling me this isn't above the standards of some of the crap they've aired? We're talking about the bottom of the television barrel here, this isn't Bravo. The gunplay explanation is the only one that holds up.

Or Tom Green. Don't think that MTV is above airing anything. More likely, their corporate parent and Vince or Columbia aren't seeing eye-to-eye, or the proper backs haven't been scratched as required by whatever the modern-day payola protocol is.

Sorry, but if you want some controversy, look back to the Attitude era. Steve Austin beating the hell out of his boss, drinking beers, dropping Stunners, using "Austin 3:16" and flipping the bird? That's controversy, but it's controversy that works because it's believable coming from him. Cena just seems overly gimmicked to me, and if you ask me they should focus less on the "hip-hop" aspect of his character and more on the "rebel". I think it'd appeal to a broader base of people. But then, there are more reasons other than that why Cena won't ever be as popular as Austin, Rock, Foley and the "WWF Attitude" generation. “Hey, I'm bilingual! That would be a lot more logical. I think Cena would be a lot hotter if they'd stuck with him as the edgy heel he was in late 2003 when he started getting over rather than turning him into the campy, over the top, "please buy my merchandise" version that he's been for the last year and a bit. While I'm not exactly in tune with the hip hop business, I can't help but think that would sell more in that crowd than this kiddie-pandering characature.

Nah, same over here, Pimp My Ride, Cribs, Punk'd and the 2 Jackass spinoffs. And then they'll squeeze in another couple of episodes of the "We Have No Real Life So All We Do is These Stupid RR/RW Challenges".

A little-known fact about MTV is that they actually do play videos late at night when you're sleeping. I learned about this back in college, when I didn't sleep.
