The Hawks and the Phoenix Suns have nearly finalized a sign-and-trade deal that would send guard Joe Johnson to Atlanta for Boris Diaw and two lottery-protected first-round draft picks, according to three people familiar with the negotiations.

The arrow points both ways in the blame game. Johnson was upset that the Suns would not give him $50 million over six years last summer and then offered $60 million over five years last month as a counter to Atlanta's maximum deal.

He had hoped Phoenix would open July with a huge offer, became upset when he was asked to choose between offers and rejected a Suns request to restructure the $69.6 million.

So Phoenix is losing both Q & JJ this offseason. They'll still be good but I'm not too sure they'll be winning 60+ this season.

JJ is pretty good but not at the 5/$70M the Hawks were willing to give him. And what's Atlanta doing? It just seems like they're stockpiling swingmen.

Losing Q wasn't big at all for them (watch as he plays the entire playoffs with two hands firmly gripping his throat), but Johnson was very very important to their ability to play consistently at the breakneck pace they liked to. Unless Amare continues to improve at an amazing clip, this loss is going to hurt them a lot.

Wow. Another guy dreaming of greener grass in the NBA No Man's Land that is Atlanta. Now Joe Johnson will join Al Harrington, who last year was all, "Waaaah, I wanna start, trade me!" "OK," said Donnie Walsh, and send him to what turned out to be the league's worst team.

What is it with players who think money and a spot in the starting lineup for a horrendous team is better than a sixth-man role for a potential World Champion team? It just boggles my mind.

Funny thing is that he would've been starting in Phoenix now with Q gone. Enjoy your max deal and 25-win seasons JJ.

He had been starting in Phoenix. Their usual starting lineup was Nash, JJ, Q, Marion and Amare. Based on the local analysis here, it is a split opinion.

Johnson was insulted when the Suns wouldn't give him a 6 year $50 million deal before last year, and he seems to have issues with Amare and only being the "4th" option on the Suns.

Sarver is being vilified for breaking up a young team contending for the title to avoid the luxury tax.

I agree that Q did nothing in the playoffs, and that adding Thomas will help us (maybe not in the regular season, but definitely in the playoffs).

They signed Raja Bell to add depth, and still have Jimmy Jackson, so they will slip some. The biggest thing they got in the deal with Atlanta that seems to slip past people is the $4.9 million trade exception. I would look for them to pick up someone during the season for one of those first round picks that will help further cushion the loss.

25?
I'd be shocked if they get to 10...What was it 13 last year?
Living in Atlanta, nothing boggles my mind more than the moves the Hawks continue to make year after year. 70 million for Joe Johnson, huh? AOL/Time Warner ruined this team years ago...

This trade is in jeopardy now as the Hawk's "team governor", Steve Belkin, refuses to sign the dotted line.
The Hawks tried to have the courts remove him from the ownership group and they failed.

The whole thing is just a mess and JJ may end up staying in Phoenix.

This is the most Atlanta Hawks-like moment in Atlanta Hawks history.

Yeesh. At least Shareef Abdur-Rahim eventually signed off on the Nets deal.

Last season, the Bucks seemed to be on cruise control going into the All Star break, seemingly able to get at least the 2 seed in the East with their talent. Instead, the team self implodes, and doesn't even make the playoffs. Fast forward one year.
