Jetsgo has grounded operations, effectively stranding hundreds of people...and screwing those who bought their tickets in advance.

I read a few articles, and it makes me sick.

Check these out:

"Where are the executives? They should be here to explain. They should be accountable," said Toronto traveler Craig Baumgartner who was on his way to New Brunswick.

Computer terminals had been removed and there were no Jetsgo staff to assist stranded passengers. Jetsgo's Web Site, through which it booked much of its ticket sales, was not working on Friday morning.

"We deeply regret that this had to happen. The decision to cease operations was only taken after difficult deliberation," Michel Leblanc, president of Jetsgo, said in a statement.

The Montreal-based airline said it would ask Quebec Superior Court to grant it protection under the Companies' Creditors Arrangement Act. It said travellers should make alternative arrangements with other airlines.

The carrier, which started flying in 2002, operated 14 Boeing MD-83 and was in the process of adding 18 Fokker 100 commuter jets. It flew to 30 destinations in Canada and the United States.

Funny...the airline was started by the former president of Royal Airlines, which he sold to Canada 300...which was easily (in my experience) one of the worst airline companies in the world. I was happy to see them declare bankruptcy.

I dunno about anyone else, but I smell a class action lawsuit coming on! If I were one of these people (esp. the woman who booked her flight LAST NIGHT) I'd be on the horn with my lawyer ASAP about all this.

Comments?

Class action suit? Against a bankrupt company? What do you get if you win -- more tickets?

Seriously, if they're bankrupt, you're not going to get any money, because bigger creditors will have the opportunity to pick over the corpse faster than the average person will.

I don't know about Canadian bankruptcy laws, but in the US, all the ticket buyers have to stand in line with the other creditors (who are probably owed millions) and hope they can get $0.25 on the $1.00.

I don't know if a class-action lawsuit would help. Down here, if a company had tried to keep assets above revenue in good faith, bankruptcy laws will shield them from lawsuits while they try to liquidate assets to pay off creditors.

I may be off on my assumptions as I am a 2nd year accounting major, and do not know Canadian laws, nor have CPA, nor am a lawyer.

With fuel costs rising, I think there will be more bankruptcies on the way this year.

(edit: Basically what Sec says, as he types faster than I )

That's a good point, but perhaps against the president of the company? The board of directors? I mean, in a matter of a day the company basically fell apart, and someone should be held accountable. Even Canada 3000 gave SOME notice that they were dying.

I was at the airport in Halifax Wednesday morning.

The lineup for the WestJet counter was packed. The lineup for the Jetsgo counter was absolutely empty. Seriously, not ONE person was flying Jetsgo while I was waiting in line...

The stock-holders MIGHT be able to go after the board just like what's happening to Disney right now.

Just about everyone I know who has flown JetsGo in the past has a horror story, myself included. After having them drop a flight 1/2 hour before it was scheduled to takeoff, I swore "never again" and it's been WestJet since then.

Good riddance.

But I don't know ... SOK makes mention of someone buying tickets the night before. They obviously had to know that they were declaring bankruptcy, and wouldn't be flying, so it seems underhanded of them to continue selling tickets. The least they could have done is tell people that they were going to end on that date, so that people could get their money back before bankruptcy became an issue. Maybe it's not illegal, but that doesn't make it right.

NOTE: The above post makes no sense. We apologize for the inconvenience.

Jetsgo is (was?) a private company, though.

Holy shit. Hard to believe Jetsgo was able to last as long as it did, with its horrible customer service and unsafe practices. Guess that goes to show you that people are willing to put up with a lot of shit to save a few bucks. Which is very unfortunate.

It may be a moot point, but I didn't care for their customer service people. I investigated them when I was booking my vacation last year (Edmonton to Toronto last March) and they really didn't impress me. In terms of prices, their prices were the exact same as WestJet, but with one difference: on Westjet, coffee and non-alcoholic drinks are free, but are a dollar and change on Jetsgo. Needless to say, as a self declared coffeeholic...I went Westjet, and it was the best flight I'd ever taken.
