So I'm watching Goldberg vs Kevin Nash Starrcade 98. No, I don't know why.

Did Michael Buffer ALWAYS carry on for so long? Jesus, he reminded me of a Jehovah's Witness starting a prayer. "King of King, Lord of Lords, Heavenly Father, Alpha, Omega, Guiding Light, Holy Spirit, Divine Inspiration." And on and on and ON. I didn't know someone could SAY so much about Kevin Nash, seriously.

On the other hand, he kinda gave it a big-time feel. It always cracked me up that every title match was "the moment the world had been waiting for."

Oh, LORD. Perfect example:

Michael Buffer: "the man with a following like no other in the world today.. the man whose power spear, inverted lift, and bodyslam has defeated 174 consecutive components without a loss...the man who puts a perfect record on the line in this match.. the man who is the reigning and defending, undisputed, undefeated, WCW NWO Heavyweight Champion of the World, the man.. is.. GOLDBERG!"

And, mind you, that's the tail end of it. Heh.

Should WWE maybe look into hiring Buffer? I'm torn.. he had a great voice and made it feel official, but lord. S.T.F.U., dude.

No. No no no no no no NO. I don't want anyone but Howard Finkel announcing my Royal Rumbles and my WrestleManias. And when Finkel dies, I want a recording of Finkel. One of the conditions for all the Diva Search entries should have been a willingness to bear Howard Finkel's son, so that there is always a Howard Finkel.

"He is the most overrated piece of crap in the league. He bitched and whined after he got his ass beaten in New England last year, so the NFL changed the rules. Then he got his ass beaten in New England again. Every year he's the top MVP candidate. Every year he's supposed to be the best. Every year he's going to carry the Colts to the Super Bowl. And every single year he goes to New England and gets his ass beaten. And his brother's a whiny little bitch." -A friend of mine, on Peyton Manning

Heh. I like Fink myself. Still, it kind of surprises me that VKM didn't snatch up Buffer in the acquisition. You gotta admit, he's really distinctive.

And I think I'd rather have him instead of Lillian if Fink decides to retire at some point.

I've got to agree with Gugs -- Fink is, and should always be, the man for big events.

WCW used Buffer to help build name recognition -- here was a nationally-known personality who introduced tons of big boxing matches and even appeared on David Letterman semi-regularly. Don't get me wrong -- he has a great, distinctive voice. But his introductions would go on FOREVER at times, and the fact that he wasn't used sparingly in WCW definitely took away from his effectiveness.

Also, I doubt Buffer would have even been available in the acquisition. He was probably on an independent television contract with Turner, and, like half of the roster in WCW at the time, was probably overpaid like crazy.

I like Buffer, but yeah, he DOES tend to drone on and on with his entrances. WWE edited his voice out of the Nash/Goldberg match on the NWO DVD, so at least that solves that.

Buffer gets paid by the appearance and (from the looks of the DVD releases) his "license" only covers the live event. Good gig if you can get it, I guess.

If WWE won't even pay to get "Enter Sandman" on the ONS DVD, I think it's pretty clear they're too cheap to pay for any Michael Buffer introdcutions.

I read somewhere at the time that WCW was paying him something like $5,000 every time he showed up to do an intro (digging around on the Net, he's charging anywhere from $6,000-10,000 now). I doubt Vince cares enough to pay the guy that much to come in and do main event intros when he's already got four ring announcers on payroll.

I think the sticking point with Buffer's appearence on DVD is the fact that he owns the "Let's Get Ready to Rumble" trademark, and the WWE would have to pay percentage on their DVD sales for every copy that had him saying it.

But he doesn't own "Lets get ready to suck it!"

I miss HHH's old ring intro.

"Distinctive voice" or not, Buffer sucked during his WCW tenure. When you get paid a crapload of money and all you have to do is announce one (maybe two) matches a night, you better know the names of the competitors. Next to Lillian Garcia, the most clueless pro wrestling ring announcer I've ever seen.

I dunno if it's fair to assess Lillian's now-six year career based on her first four months on the job.

Buffer also has a habit of being very, very sue-happy when it comes to that trademark. He goes after everything from other people using it to local radio programs playing "Let's get ready to rumble" sound bytes

I remember (was it during one of his first WCW events?) that Buffer announced the two wrestlers AFTER they entered the ring.

The introduction was that of HHH-interview proportions. Dull, boring, and annoying. I think even those in the ring (I think Hogan was one of the wrestlers) was getting annoyed.

That probably stems from his boxing days, in boxing he always introduces the fighters once they come out and are in the ring...

Lillian Garcia still sucks. I'll take Tony Chimel or even that new guy over her everyday of the week.

Take is easy on Lillian. EVERYBODY has had some sort of "debacle" on the job at one time or another.

I don't think the writing has been that hilarious in Dating Game (save for "Rainbow Bright" and "Nam") or Idol, but Santino made both segments. That guy is the best guy. Also Regal is lookin' good with his hair grown out!
