I really really reallllllly want to write bad things about this movie. I really do.

But I can't.

I will let fans of Kevin Smith do it for me.

This movie will ironically probably go down as Kevin Smiths best work.

He finally made a movie that will appeal to everyone.

I am a HUGE fan of smith movies like Mallrats and chasing amy...this was NOTHING like those. This was a "real" movie.

The true genius behind this movie was the fact that Kevin Smith singlehandedly saved Ben Affleck's career. Ben was almost out of our lives. His last crop of movies were so bad, people we're ready to be done with him. His documented personal life painted him to be a person that every woman would cringe at...This movie will change all of that.

In my estimation, there wasn't ONE girl in the theatre that didn't leave Jersey Girl COMPLETLEY in love with Ben Affleck.

Liv Tyler was pretty smokin' in this film.

But Ben - he's back.

Is that a good thing?

The little girl in it was right on point! George Carlin was heart warming.

But Ben - he's back.

There is a very fun moment with Will Smith in the movie.

Jason Biggs is also kind of in this movie.

Jenifer Lopez is kind of in this movie.

but Ben - Hes back.

In a film about a spin-docter who loses his posh life to raise a daughter as a single dad, the ultimate spin is still that, yes - ben is back.

If you like about a boy, you will probably like this movie.

If you are a girl you WILL like this movie.

If you are a Kevin Smith fan, you will probably write him an email after the film.

If you are a Ben Affleck fan, or a girl, you will like this movie.

Alert the press....Ben is back.

What are you trying to tell us?

Seriously, though, I'm definately going to see Jersey Girl, but the reviews haven't been kind to it, so I'm not going out of my way to do so. And About A Boy was very, very good. Nick Hornby's book was flawlessly adapted by the guys who wrote American Pie, and Hugh Grant was fantastic. Ben Affleck is no Hugh Grant, though, so I'm entering Jersey Girl with some worries.

I wouldn't say the jury's out on Ben Affleck being "back" so to speak just yet. I actually saw the movie twice (don't get me wrong, I didn't want to), and Ben Affleck was hardly what I'd call "back" or great in it. You can read my review here (shameless plug):

http://www.hybridmagazine.com/ films/0304/jersey-girl.shtml

The movie is getting panned in reviews, and it made about $8 million for the weekend. I guess that's ok since it was only on 1,500 screens, which I believe gets upped to around 2,000 next weekend...so it could do better depending on audience reaction and word of mouth.

Whether Ben is back or not, he's still a bad and incompetent acting talent.

I don't really want to see this movie, the only reason I MIGHT go see it is cause George Carlin is in it. Other than that, I see no reason for me to go see this movie.

BTW, maybe it's just me, but how come when Ben Affleck wasn't with J-Lo at first he dressed like a normal person, then when it became "Bennifer" he went out of his way to dress up and wear expensive cloths now again without J-Lo he is "down to Earth" dressing again?

I can't say I've followed Ben Affleck's wardrobe enough to know whether your impression is right or not, but its not unheard of for a girlfriend to affect a man's clothing choices. I used to pretty much just wear jeans and flannel shirts. Then I started dating a girl who liked to shop at Abercrombie & Fitch and Structure and whatnot. When the relationship FINALLY ended, I was left with some new pairs of cargo pants (nice!) and sweater vests (boo!).

I don't think it's fair to call Afleck a bad actor. He's not a leading man, he doesn't have that sort of presence. Also, he seems incapable of choosing a good script. But he's a perfectly serviceable talent, that could do a lot of good work in supporting roles.

Please don't compare the pile of garbage that is Jersey Girl to About a Boy. About a Boy is the perfect example of how to do a movie of that sort without being saccharine. Although I do prefer the end of the book better than the end of the movie, I still think the movie is brilliant.

Proof of About A Boy's superiority: Academy Award nomination for Best Adapted Screenplay; Golden Globe nominations for Best Actor (Comedy or Musical) and Best Picture (Comedy or Musical), and the Writer's Guild of America nomination for Best Adapted Screenplay.

Yes, the guys who cowrote American Pie also have an Oscar nomination. Be afraid.

If "Ben is back," that implies he was actually somewhere to begin with.
And I have trouble accepting that.

As a loyal Kevin Smith fanboy, I will NOT be seeing this movie in theatres or on DVD format. I really don't need another icon in my youth crumbling to dust. Any movie that uses "Walking on Sunshine" as the music for it's commercials is going to suck.

While I probably won't go to see Jersey Girl, I can live with Kevin Smith doing something different. Jay & Silent Bob Strike Back took the gruesome twosome and their Jersey entourage about as far as they could go, and THAT was a fan-service valentine of a movie. I can't imagine what a J&SBSB 2 script would look like.

And Affleck was the bomb in Phantoms, yo.

I saw this today, and it wasnt bad. I liked the Dialog, you could tell it was a Kevin Smith Movie. The story went exactly where you thought it would, but in a nice, easy to accept way. Ben was good, if not above average in this movie. Carlin is the dad that everybody should have.

If only Liv Tyler didnt have that lisp, she would be near perfect!

X-E's co-Worst Poster of all time! JKyle.com says:

This movie was utterly predictable.

And yet, I absolutely love it.

Anyone who says Affleck is nothing either
A)hasn't seen Chasing Amy
B)wasn't paying attention during Chasing Amy

So many people want to hate Affleck just to hate Affleck. So many fanboys want to hate Smith for not pandering to them again.

Newsflash:
Ben can act. You can feel Ben's pain here. When he screams that he wants his life back you just absorb this anger and you know, you KNOW that he doesn't mean it. That he's more angry at himself for NOT wanting his life back.

Newsflash:
If including Sweeney Todd isn't catering to fanboys (yeah, so it's a few generations late) I don't know what is.

Carlin and Tyler are gold. Jimmie James from Newsradio is gold... especially the throwaway line about him and Carlin's other friend being a gay couple at the end. Which, btw, is just one of the MANY things adults will catch that kids won't.

On the other hand, I had no idea you could say shit so many times in a PG 13... or say fuck more than once in a PG 13. I honestly wonder WHAT the two cuts that got this out of R land.

Yeah the plot is nothing special, and it's everything to be said about it is said in its synopsis. But Smith's best work has been about characters.

Character stuff: Clerks, Chasing Amy, Jersey Girl

Throw a plot together with some jokes stuff: Mallrats, Dogma, Clerks:TAM, Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back

Not to say I don't really dig the second type, but his first have always felt best to me. And that's what this is:
a character movie.

A pretty damn good one too.

My latest theory is that Seth Monroe and Hyatte are the same person, pretending to be Tammy Sytch in their off time. When not busy being Flea.
