From wwe.com:

"Chris Jericho has been suspended indefinitely due to an irresponsible act of denigrating the Brazilian flag at a WWE live event in São Paulo on May 24. WWE has apologized to the citizens and the government of Brazil for this incident."

Oy...

From Cagesideseats.com via TMZ:

"It all went down during a match between Jericho and C.M. Punk -- who was proudly waving the flag in the ring. Jericho took the flag away, crumpled it up and kicked the flag out of the ring ... and that's when police stepped in and put a stop to the event.

We're told Jericho was informed that desecrating the national flag is a crime in Brazil ... punishable by incarceration.

Cops gave Jericho an option -- apologize to the arena ... or go to jail. Chris chose the former ... grabbing the mic and telling the crowd he immediately regretted his actions. Cops allowed the event to continue."

Just for the record I love Brazil and wish we could've spent more time here. Beautiful country!

Well, that is not good. Hopefully, the suspension is not that long. Dicey situation on one hand, you don't want to disrespect the country, on the other hand, he is a heel.

So, last time he left he was punted out by Orton, and this time he gets punted for punting a flag? Ironic.

Jericho is by all accounts a good guy, but he has a tendency to get really carried away with his character. He really should have known better than to do that. This was a monumentally stupid brainfart, and I don't know what was going through his head.

I was under the impression he was done anyway (for the time being) after the Orton program. I'm curious to see if they finish that up or not.

Wait...isn't that what a bad guy ("heel") is supposed to do?

It is, but I almost think he should know enough to check with someone in the country about doing things like this. He's one of the old school guys that traveled the world for most of his life before joining WCW/WWE. He should know that some cultures take things very differently than others. Just because people tend not to care about our flags in North America doesn't mean that no one cares worldwide. Whenever our international news wants to show some country that hates the US, they always show foreign cultures destroying the US flag, because to them, that's a hugely offensive deal.

I've seen people compare this to Finley's firing over the national anthem, but I'd say it's more like JBL's Nazi referencing in Germany. JBL's screw up was stupider I think, because I think it's more common knowledge that imitating Nazi's is illegal there.

HBK stuck the Canadian flag up his nose on live TV. They still use the clip on WWE TV. I'm pretty sure that in Jericho's mind he wasn't crossing any "line".

Although if Chris Jericho started wrestling in an LED-covered mask as the "Lite Brite Rider" that would pretty awesome.

That's what I remember. And I HATED Michaels for it back in the late 90s. I would daydream of choking the life out of him with my own flag. I assume that's the reaction he was looking to get.

Sorry but that's just a stupid law. Seriously? He kicked a piece of cloth and that's potentially punishable by jailtime or suspended from WWE?

Absurd.

Wow, waking up to find twitter blaming me for an apparent suspension of @IAmJericho Seems to me I'd blame the horrific PC world we've allowed ourselves to be caught up in where you can't "act" & have it called "acting." BS!! I'll stand behind @IAmJericho any day of the week & twice on Sunday...what's the big "E" stand for in WWE anyway!! I honestly don't see how many of you make it w/that much anger in your life...seems exhausting & a colossal waste of time!!

    Absurd.
Feel free to go down to Brazil and get their law changed. Also, be thankful you're an American, but vigilant that some law protecting OUR flag doesn't get passed. (Also, thank some troops for protecting your freedom.)

I'm sure the suspension is a PR, attempting to save face move for WWE and nothing more. Jericho is a man and he'll take his lumps.

FINALLY, this thread could have been given a better title. That is all.

I think the police handled this well...they basically informed Jericho he'd broken the law and allowed him to apologize for it without going overboard.

The surprise for me is that WWE followed up with a suspension. Really? How many nationalities has WWE soiled over the years with stereotype heels and flags (including our own with the 'Right to Censor' interruption of the national anthem at countless house shows) in the name of 'sports entertainment'?

Jericho is not doing anything interesting right now, so hopefully this gives them time to think up a program for him.

Either way, this just goes to show you that freedom of speech is not something to take for granted... we should be grateful for it and defend it on all levels.

He'd had been fired over this again probably

Per WWE.com

Chris Jericho has been suspended for 30 days due to an irresponsible act of denigrating the Brazilian flag at a WWE live event in São Paulo on May 24. WWE has apologized to the citizens and the government of Brazil for this incident.

So, he misses a few paydays and gets out of jobbing to Orton on PPV. No big loss to him I'm sure.

That seems like a good chunk of time for something I am sure was spur of the moment and basic heel tactic 101.

I saw Holly and Angle have a hell of 6 minute match on one of the first ever Velocitys. It was stupid, because Holly got to kick out of Angle Slams and shit, and Kurt only beat Bob Holly by holding the ropes, but it was a really good match nonetheless.
