A cursory examination of Twitter comments on the trending topic "Jennifer's Body" show me that the more teenage and female you are, the more the jokes in Jennifer's Body worked for you.

For me, Jennifer's Body was a big cock tease. I thought the movie had many moments of fun and real wit, but on the whole I thought it was a drag and felt kind of empty and pointless.

I say more here on my new version of Back of the Head (SPOILERS):

You'd be surprised at the difference an actress makes. Diablo Cody's irritating style of dialogue worked so well coming from Ellen Page in "Juno", but give that same dialogue to Megan Fox and it magically becomes grating and nails-on-a-chalkboard annoying. All I could think of was...do kids REALLY talk like that?

Worst part of the movie? For a scary movie, it wasn't scary at all. Best part? The credits sequence, when certain characters get much-needed comeuppance, which I won't go into for the sake of spoilers.

It's a thumbs down for me.

I guess this is proof positive that Megan Fox isn't a very good actress!

I'd still find Fox hot if she wasn't so annoying in her interviews.

I'd like to think it was more a case of Diablo Cody being a flavor of the month, and not actually a very good writer.

The major complaint I heard from people who saw the film is that all the cultural references are about two years old (Bowflex, Hannah Montana, Wikipedia).

I think this is the more likely culprit. The dialogue in Juno was just as wince-worthy, and sounded like Diablo Cody writing who she desperately wishes she had been back at Benet. Juno felt like fan-fiction level writing, with Juno as the ultimate Mary Sue.

I wouldn't agree with that at all. You may not have liked the dialog in Juno, but bear in mind that only two major characters - Juno and her friend, and also Rainn Wilson who's in the movie for like three minutes - use the dialog that everybody complains about. Everyone else spoke in a naturalistic manner. And the plot of the script was actually really tight - every element of the story builds on previous elements and moves toward the conflict, resolution, and conclusion. So, hate the dialog, by all means, but don't dismiss the script as a whole.

Word. What Tenken347 said. Juno is a great movie. Jennifer's Body, while also ostensibly about teenage girls in high school, is a completely different kind of movie entirely, playing by the dual rules of teen horror and teen comedy. Diablo Cody is a hell of a good writer; regardless of whether or not you enjoy how she writes teenage girl dialogue. Not liking her girlspeak is a fine and a valid complaint. But beyond that idiosyncracy, Cody is very talented.

So is it a different Diablo Cody that writes those horrible columns in Ent Weekly?

I haven't seen Juno or Jennifer's Body. My only exposure to Ms. Cody has been her EW column. Judging her talent solely on this column, I would say she's a terrible writer.

Of course, of the three writers that alternate writing that column, the only one I like is Stephen King.
