Both a huge addition to the Hornets and a big loss for the Celtics.

ESPN - Posey agrees to four-year deal with Hornets

LAS VEGAS -- The reigning NBA champions are about to lose their glue guy.

James Posey, arguably the most coveted unrestricted free agent left on the market, agreed to a four-year deal with the New Orleans Hornets on Wednesday worth an estimated $25 million, his agent, Mark Bartelstein, said.

Because of future luxury-tax concerns, Boston was apparently reluctant to offer Posey, 31, more than a two- or three-year deal starting at the league's mid-level exception (just under $5.6 million) in spite of Posey's considerable contributions to the Celtics' first championship since 1986.

Posey was a huge defensive presence and a pivotal scorer in the Finals this year. I'm honestly surprised that Boston was unwilling to re-sign him, just because there's not really anyone who can replace him.

The Hornets, meanwhile, find a more-than-worthy replacement for the departing Jannelle Pargo.

Everyone on the Hornets will show a lot more toughness with Posey on the team. It's one of the smartest signings by a team in awhile.

This is a hard blow for Boston. He might have been the third most irreplaceable guy on the team.

Not at that price. John Hollinger has the best take on it at ESPN -

They are paying $25 million for Posey's age 31-35 seasons. There is no way he's worth that. Hollinger's point is that matching would have hamstrung the Celtics and they can easily find someone to replace him just fine.

I'm curious to know which of the NEW BIG THREE you think is more replaceable than James Posey.

You could argue Ray Allen. I wouldn't, but you could. Also, Posey was 5th most, as Rondo is only slightly less important than Garnett, Pierce, Allen. Would have liked to have kept Posey, but with the luxury tax it was tough. The Celtics got a championship and Posey turned it into security for his family. I wish him well.

After reading that I might have to rethink things slightly ...

The top names on that list are Bryon Russell, Dan Majerle, Jaren Jackson, Rick Fox and Raja Bell.

Bell is only a year older and declined noticeably last season.
Majerle declined sharply starting at 30 and had his last useful season at 32.
Jackson had a quality season at 32 but played 25 games the rest of his career.
Russell lost it at 31 and never got it back, though he managed to hang around for four more years.
Fox played reasonably well until 33 and then lost it, hard, and was out of the league by 35.

Swim deeper in the similarity pool and you'll find similar stories from Walter McCarty, Shandon Anderson, Lucious Harris, Doug Christie, Eddie Jones and Aaron McKie.

That's a little scary when you look at it like that, plus factor all the extra games Posey played the last couple of years. I still think he is going to be a huge boost for the Hornets this coming year and even a year or two after, but the deal was a little long and rich.
