In a way it was shocking, but after the news conference last month, it seemed inevitable. It's sad that he won't get the chance to sit in Parliament after leading the NDP to its greatest result ever in a Canadian election.
It's nice to see Jack getting tributes from all sides of the political spectrum, even those who can't stand the NDP, just because he was likeable, charismatic, and passionate about Canada.
Sad day for Canada. I lived in Layton's riding in Toronto for three years and had nothing but respect and admiration for the man. RIP Jack

The game begins in the spring, when everything else begins again, and it blossoms in the summer, filling the afternoons and evenings, and then as soon as the chill rains come, it stops and leaves you to face the fall alone." --- Bart Giamatti, on baseball

Unfortunately, I'm not that optimistic just because I don't see either candidate getting over 300 votes in the Electoral College. At that point, 1 or 2 states change the winner and make litigation more appealing and palatable to the base.
