I'm hoping some of the older Wieners can help me out on this.

I read an interview with one of the Deal twins back in '93 where the interviewer asked a question about what it was like covering Barlow's "Do You Love Me Now?" with Mascis producing, since the song was about his split with Mascis. (She said he appeared to not be paying attention.)

I have The Breeders' single with the song as a b-side. I also have the Dinosaur, Jr. album from the same year that features Deal as a background singer for a song called "Drawerings." That song really sounds like the proverbial answer for Barlow.

Does anyone here know anything more about the Mascis / Barlow "feud"? Or about these songs? I've been searching Google all morning but there isn't a lot available from 1993 (understandably.)

I'd totally forgot about that whole thing for some reason.

Mascis kicked Barlow out of DJ in 1988/89 for what he called "massive social ineptitude." Yeah, J's one to talk.

When the Deal twin in question said he appeared not to be paying attention, she was probably right. This is J Mascis after all--he could probably paint you an incredibly detailed portrait of his shoetops, but don't ask him if it's raining, snowing or sunny...

And I thought it was "Freed Pig" not "Do You Love me Now?" that was the big F-U to Mascis.

From what I was able to find today, they still talk; Barlow says Mascis is "nice" to him most of the times they meet now. Mascis claims he sort of "dumped" Barlow, but that DJ didn't really break up until 1998. J gets better drugs than I do apparently.

On a related note, two more questions to add to FABs:

1. Anyone heard Mascis' latest "Free So Free"? I loved "More Light" and am wondering if the skronk continues on "Free So Free".

2. Can anyone speak to the veracity of the story that Mascis and Uma Thurman were an item in highschool and that he's still hung up on her? The source for this is a pitchforkmedia.com review which obviously means it's probably full of shit (http://pitchforkmedia.com/record-reviews/m/mascis_j/free-so-free.shtml)

Wasn't Mascis really, really fat in high school? Or did he pork up in college?

And thanks for the extra info. I figured "Do You Love Me Now" was the song because it was the only Breeders track I've seen produced by him.

I have "Feel So Free" but I can't compare it to anything. My collection ends at "Where You Been." It's an okay album. It definitely sounds like what skydiving must be like. The music is upbeat but lacking (IMO.) He also uses the words "free" and "freedom" like Snoop uses "weed" and "mother fucker." I wouldn't recommend paying full price for it.

All I remember is around the time Bakesale came out (95, I think), there was a piece in Rolling Stone about Lou, who claimed he wanted a DinoJ reunion on SNL so he could give him the ol' El Kabong.
He then said something to the effect of: I will hate him forever.

Oh, and some guy in high school who was a big DinoJ fan wouldn't talk to me after I wore a Sebadoh shirt to school. What a zeeb.

Doesn't answer any questions, really, but how often do I get to show off that I know anything about Barlow?

I had no idea about Lou Barlow until Bakesale. I got the "Rebound" single, found out he used to be in Dinosaur, Jr. and it was over. Some of his stuff gets too far out there for me though. (Sentridoh, perfect example.)

It's always cool getting a little more info. If I were Lou I'd want to smash a guitar over Mascis' head too. The version of the break up that I heard was J told Lou the band had broke up and then "reformed" the band without him. Damn that's scheisty!

The answers to this can be found in the book "Our Band Could Be Your Life". The Dinosaur Jr section is really funny. Lou was really jealous of J's skills, and fell in line for years, and once he got a girlfriend, he started exerting himself, to the point where they kicked him out, but took their sweet time doing it. As I said, read the chapter, it's really hilarious.

Well, you've probably answered yr question with yr last sentence. I'd never heard this before the review, and I think Mascis is a few years older than Uma Thurman. I mean, she would've only been 15 when the first Dino Jr record came out.

"Wasn't Mascis really, really fat in high school? Or did he pork up in college?"

He's really thin on the back cover to the first LP.

Thanks for that, Knuf. Sounds like your basic band problems then. They both obviously had the talent to pull it off though. Neither of them are managing a Wendy's!

And of course, any discussion about J. Mascis's laziness and social ineptitude would be thoroughly incomplete if some geek (me, in this case) didn't remind everyone that these qualities of Mascis inspired the opening track of Daydream Nation (..it takes a teenage riot to get me out of bed).

Not the most important thing to point out, I guess, but I did want to express my sheer delight at not being the only fan of both Kurt Angle and "Whatever's Cool With Me."

Besides Bob Mould, of course, but that was discussed here long ago.

We're out there. Somewhere. Beneath the pale moonlight.

You can probably count Billy Corgan in our numbers too.

The Deep Wound 7" is classic, if J & Lou reunited to do that band it'd be sick... tho the odds are even that it'd be lame. And as I recall, J was thin when that came out, and that was pre-DinoJr... I understand they also were complete socially inept nerds then as well, the music was just harsher...

(If you know what I'm talking about, props. If you don't, Deep Wound is the hardcore band J & Lou had when they were 14. It's not really a relevant work outside of the hardcore scene, but it goes for a lot of money on Ebay and besides, I'm a show off. Heh.)

Back to the 'mainstream' if you will, I always liked DinoJr better than Sebadoh. Dunno why, Sebadoh never did it for me. But DinoJr I still listen to on a semi-regular basis...
