AUBURN HILLS, Mich. -- Allen Iverson said he was ready to play in Sunday's 85-69 loss to the Detroit Pistons but changed his mind after 76ers coach Chris Ford told him he'd come off the bench.

"I'm a starter. I've been a starter here for eight years. I'm not a sixth man," Iverson said after the game. "I'm a starter. I know in this league ... if someone comes back from an injury, if he's a starter he starts. What's the difference? If you're going to cut my time down, cut my time down. It doesn't make any difference. I'm a starter."

Iverson has been hampered by a swollen right knee, which caused him to miss three straight games before Sunday. The league's second-leading scorer participated in the shootaround before the game but was on the Sixers' bench in street clothes at tip-off.

After the game, he said he "was already taped and everything and had my uniform on. I had to take it back off, so that was rough."

"I feel real disappointed because I told the trainers I was going to play," Iverson said. "He (Ford) said I hadn't run up and down the court, and he wasn't sure about my conditioning."

Ford and Iverson have had a rocky relationship since the coach replaced the fired Randy Ayers on Feb. 9.

"I didn't know he was going to attempt to play until how much time was left on the (pre-game) clock? Not much," Ford said. "From my understanding and what I was told yesterday after his workout, I'm going to look out for A.I. and the team. Somebody's got to make decisions around here."

Good call Ford, 'cuz not using your the best player on your team when he's healthy is very conducive to a winning record. Are you fuckin' insane?

I am sorry you are blaming this of Chris Ford??????? He told AI that we are going to take it easy and not let you start and Iverson said "Screw you I am not going to play". This just continues to show why Iverson is the most selfish playing in the NBA right now.

Iverson may be a moron (and a selfish one, at that), but I like a man who knows how to stick to his original point when speaking!

Well, limit A.I.'s minutes if you feel it's gonna help him, but you know Iverson's gonna be pissed if you suggest that he come off the bench. You know he's got an ego, same as all superstar players. Iverson's not as good at putting aside that ego for the good of the team as other players are...

...but what team? The 76ers, right now, are Allen Iverson and 11 guys who suck.

I wonder what the NBA would be like if all coaches knew they were gone at the end of the season and did what THEY wanted and not what their egotistical players wanted? If Iverson would learn from this year, he would be a much better player. God Bless Ford. I hope he sticks to his guns.

I think both parties are in the wrong here. Ford should let the starters start, especially when the guy is by far the best player on the team. You can limit his minutes but still let him start. So I think Iverson has a good point, but he still shouldn't act like such a baby about it. Either take what the coach gives you or don't play at all.

Just remember...you can't spell "asshole-ish" without A.I.

Of course, you can't spell "WrestleMania" without it, either, but...dammit, I had a point around here somewhere...

Iverson is being silly here. Does it matter if in his first game back from injury he comes off the bench and plays 30 minutes or starts and plays 30 minutes?

Double dumb ass award to Iverson for sitting on the Sixers bench while wearing a Bucks jersey.

On ESPN radio today, the heads said that management was for this. So where is A.I. next year? Doesn't look like Philly.

On the other hand, I know I defended Iverson earlier, but after seeing Tim Duncan come off the bench and get 22 points and 10 rebounds in San Antonio's twenty-point win over Minnesota, I take it back.

Duncan had no problem coming off the bench, and come to think of it Shaq had no problem doing it a few years ago when he was coming back from one of his million injuries. That's why Duncan and Shaq are living legends, and Iverson's a shmuck.

I still think Ford should have asked Iverson if he'd like to come off the bench, but A.I. apparently doesn't care enough about the team to put his ego aside. Again, “WHAT team?”, but...

I agree with many of you. It's both Ford and Iverson's fault. Their communication between one another sucks. Being benched is fine if you're hurt and can't play, but if you "star" player warms up before the game like Iverson did, he should start. Pull him out if he's not doing well. Let the "star" play and if indeed he can't, then take him out and talk to him. Iverson is the only clutch player on that team and isn't afraid of taking shots (sometimes a bad thing) but you need players like that. Iverson is the toughest player in the NBA right now and his fearlessness is what will make him a legend when he's all done and over with. Don't call the man a shmuck. Look @ Magic Johnson. Fucked girls everywhere till the man got HIV and is now an even bigger legend. How many players who have been 3 time scoring champ, mvp of the league, consistently leading the league in steals not made it as a legend or the hall of fame. Give the asshole his due, he's paid them. Let him start if he can, let him play if he thinks he can. When he starts to miss 5 in a row, then take him out and talk to him.

He wasn't being benched. Just being asked not to start because Ford didn't think he was in shape. Ford should have known this would be the reaction (probably did) but A.I. could have been, you know, a man and proved his coach wrong and done what he was told.

The problem lies in the fact that Iverson shouldn't have to prove his coach wrong. He's not a rookie. If he says he can go, put him out there. Let him start. Give the team a spark and a swagger again. That team is absolutely horrible with Iverson and ten times worse without him. He has proved skeptics wrong in the past about him not being able to rely on his teammates. The first incident that springs to mind is his seventeen assist performance against Toronto in the playoffs a few years ago.
Iverson says a lot dumb shit, but the man can still ball. He wants to win in the same way that Jordan wanted to win. He'd rather die on the court than lose a game. Unfortunately, his ego gets in the way and as soon as the team starts to falter, he overcompensates by shooting too much. I don't know if he will ever change; I fear it's too late for him to have a Jordan-esque turnaround in philosophy. It's truly sad because it's a pleasure to watch someone who loves the game as much as he does.
