Former major league baseball player Ivan Calderon was shot to death Saturday. He was 41.
Witnesses said Calderon was in a store when two people entered and, without a word, shot the former outfielder multiple times in the back, said police Sgt. Maribel Arzuaga.
Calderon played 10 seasons in the major leagues with Seattle, the Chicago White Sox, Boston and Montreal. He finished his big league career in 1993 with a .272 batting average, 104 homers and 444 RBIs.
Calderon was born in eastern Puerto Rico and lived in Loiza, a northern coastal town.
Things in the island are getting too fucked up. These killings are like video games.
Ivan was a class act, they had an interview with him a week ago on a local news cast where they did like a Where are they now? piece on him. He stayed in his hometown and built homes for his parents and brothers/sisters, plus donated his money and time to various institutions across the island. He died by being shot 7 times in the back, he never even saw who shot him.
The "theory" right now is that Calderon was gonna lend money to a friend of his so he could bail out another friend. Word flew around; they kill him before he could lend the money. Twelve people were around him, nobody saw or heard anything.
I'll write more as more info comes out. I'm really pissed at my island right now.
Dammit, I grew up watching Ivan Calderon. He was part of possibly my single favorite sports year ever (the 1990 White Sox) and always seemed like a good guy, even if he was a bit out there sometimes. This really sucks to hear.
Toil not to gain wealth, cease to be concerned about it. Proverbs 23:4
That is not happening in this or any other lifetime. The Sox already have three to four players penciled for the OF that they consider high-ceiling prospects (Anderson, Owens, Sweeney, possibly Fields)
