Here's the press release ... I'm sure nerds everywhere will be crying themselves to sleep tonight over this one.

"Video games offer us a distinctive voice that resonates with our target audience and G4 delivers the highest concentration of males 12-34 of any other television network." Hirschhorn also announced plans for a multi-million dollar marketing and advertising campaign to launch the G4 brand.

"Formula D," the first-ever series to showcase the world of drift racing, will burn up the screen in April on G4.

Now tell me, if Hirschorn's goal is to produce a "well-defined and focused brand" (i.e. a channel focused on one specific area - video games) ... then WHAT IN THE HELL IS A SHOW ABOUT DRIFT RACING DOING ON THE NETWORK?!?

Seriously, how does that fit in? Because it's "featured on numerous hit video games"? Please; there are lots of games featuring pro football as well, so is G4 going to start showing NFL games too?

I can't believe that (when G4 was first announced) I called my cable company to try and get them to add the channel to our lineup ... I thought it was going to be something I would actually enjoy watching; guess I learned my lesson.

Oh yeah, one more thing :

Comedian, actor and avid gamer Hal Sparks, who currently stars on Showtime's hit series "Queer as Folk," is slated to host. Sparks, along with a panel of celebrity and industry commentators, will guide viewers in G4's quest to crown the hottest video game vixen. Finalists will be announced online and G4 viewers will vote for the pageant's top beauties.

"X-Play's" Adam Sessler and "Judgment Day's" Victor Lucas, two of G4's leading video game experts, were among the "Girls Gone Wired" TCA panelists and provided critics with insight on which video game hotties should make the cut.

"Our audience interacts with digital girls as much as real girls and we're tapping into that fantasy," commented Laura Civiello, Vice President of Acquisitions and Development for G4. "'Girls Gone Wired' is the first pageant of its kind on television with contestants competing for titles like "Hottest Newcomer," "Sexiest Voice" and "Most Likely to Kick Enemy Ass."

BWAHAHAHAHAHA ... I think that sentence should be changed to "Our audience interacts ONLY with digital girls and has no idea what to do with real girls"; yeah, that better reflects the demographic who would watch a show like this.

People watch other people play golf.

People watch other people play poker.

I still don't understand why G4 doesn't have video game tournaments where we can watch other people play video games. This just doesn't make any sense.

It's awful because it's basically jumpily edited highlights of matches with terrible jokes tossed in by the commentators. It's not taken seriously; most of the show is devoted to profiling the participants and recapping the events.

They need to take some notes from REAL sports programs on how to present the action, how to comment on it, and what to do with the wrapups. And they need to get more variety in there; it's like they've got endorsement deals with specific games and never stray from them.

It's not the CONCEPT that sucks, it's just G4's current presentation of that concept.

No, Arena is along the lines of Video Power. I think what Jag's trying to get to here is that if, for instance, there's an EA FIFA World Cup championship that was held (in which a local won second or third place, actually), it's something G4 could do coverage on.

Drift racing should be on SpeedTV and not G4; I think we all agree on that.

The problem that I'm starting to see is that cable companies are hiring programming people that might have experience in the niche of cable programming, but might not have experience in the actual niche itself. Take GSN, for instance. They just hired someone over from Showtime's original programming department. Now, if it was, say amctv that hired her, it'd make sense.

We're talking game shows (sorry, "games") here, though.

On the bright side, Iron Chef: America starts on Sunday.

You wanted the best, you got... Out of Context Quote of the Week.

"Jeez, some people seem to think anything short of Vince bending over and spreading his asscheeks is a slap in the face." (Hogan's My Dad)

The only excuse I can think of for them airing something on drift racing is if it's the anime (although I think that's Initial D, not Formula D). Weren't the two big reasons that they bought TechTV Anime Unleashed and cable access (maybe even keeping a viewer or two... no, literally)?

They lost me long ago, though. No one really gave a crap about G4 until the buyout, and most of the attention I've seen it get isn't very positive. Gee, wonder why.

Actually, G4 bought TechTV for two reasons, but those two reasons were X-Play and Cable Access. X-Play carries both the "authentic" gamer credibility of Adam Sessler, and the rabid fanboys of Morgan Webb, and is basically tripling the ratings of G4's next closest show. Anime Unleashed is definately a bonus, but it loses a lot being programmed opposite Adult Swim, and constantly having to shift what shows are shown in the block.

Sorry, but anyone who thinks Adam Sessler has " "authentic" gamer credibility" has never actually looked at the man. He acts like something out of one of those retarded ads trying to show how "crazy" gamers are. I watched him for about ten minutes and wanted to cave his head in.

You're focusing on the character he portrays on TV ... In "real life", Adam is a respected member of the gaming media.

Barb, Barb, Barb! Nice touch with encouraging his sis. Cmon Barb, the finish line is over here. The Middle is no where near Modern Family or Community. Yet the show is pretty great. (whispers to self--- pretty great).
