Is it just me, or have there been an inordinate number of instances recently in which a wrestler has challenged an opponent to a match that night, only for it not to happen?

Eddie Guerrero challenged JBL, but JBL swore off because he was tired, and the match was set for Judgment Day. Shawn Michaels challenged Chris Benoit, and Benoit agreed, but Bischoff moved the match back two weeks. Tajiri challenged Coach, but Coach ordered some Chinese food instead.

Is anyone gonna actually challenge someone to a match and have it take place In That Very Ring anytime soon?

You act like you just started watching wrestling last week.

According to page two of the Official Handbook of Professional Wrestling: "Don't do today what you can put off to when more people will be watching."

True, true, it's been happening for some time now, but the frequency of it seems to have increased dramatically the last month or so. Or maybe it's just me.

Well, as the fanbase is trained to expect longer matches, it becomes much less feasible to run repeated rematches. Plus, the fans won't cotton to impromptu matches marred by Sports Entertainment Finishes, when what they really want to see is some degree of conclusiveness. Giving a match a couple of weeks of buildup leads to a greater degree of emotional involvement, and also becomes a selling point for subsequent shows.

I don't think its just you, I was noticing this myself. It's pretty clear why, but it HAS to piss off a lot of fans in the arena.

Not too long ago, while the 'E was focussing on "anything can happen" they wrote themselves into a corner and seemed to be giving away PPV quality matches on free TV more regularly, with little or no hype. With the current schedule, the hope is that the matches will mean a little more.

I can't think of when was the last time a major title was changed on Raw or SD! - and don't count the tag titles since the "E doesn't seem to care about those belts anyway.
This is why I predict Benoit retains...

If we could just get rid of all the Dusty Finishes, I'd be happy. That annoys me more than ANYTHING else in pro-wrestling. One week, the ref's decision is final, the next week, a GM can restart the match. Even if a ref restarts a match, his first decision to end the match should still take presedence over any other ruling.

The last time was the Iron Man Match in Sept. between Brock & Angle. If you want to coutn the IC belt switching between Jericho & RVD....ON THE SAME SHOW

Or when an EVIL ref overturns the good ref's decision. Or during the invasion angle (I think), when during a match the ref counted to three, but then Shane or someone ran in and prevented the timekeeper from ringing the bell. Which apparently allowed the match to continue!

Dusty finishes are fine, (and very useful) once in a great while.

It's the abuse of Dusty finishes that is really aggravating.

Actually, the RVD/Christian ladder match took place after the Iron-Man match, and was DEFINITLEY a PPV quality match.

I see what you mean, and I think it has to piss off the crowd at the arena. However, big matches need some time to be promoted, so if they're gonna' do it, they'll have to sacrifice the feelings of some of their crowds.

Definitely...at Smackdown in OKC Tuesday (and I'll leave out details since it airs tonight)...a match was booked after an exchange of words and/or blows...and then...

"If you want (wrestler x) then you can have him, RIGHT HERE......ON SMACKDOWN.....NEXT THURSDAY NIGHT."

At each pause the crowd got hotter and hotter and then actually booed when they said the last part.

But I understand the need to do so. However, it is disappointing when you THINK something cool is about to happen in front of you and then it doesn't and you realize some schmoe in Tuscon will see it instead of you and your $50 ticket.

I think it's understandable, the hometown crowd ain't going be crazy about it but overall it's good to build big matches. At least they are smarter now to make the heel give out the date because in the past a few times they had the faces do it which got them booo'ed LoL... But hey, one of my favorite heel speak is "You want a match! I'll give you a match(pops) Just not right now (booo)"

But I think WWE has been good in giving the hometown a bone(so to speak) so even if a main match was just booked in the town they got something out of it... Like Calgary was used to book Benoit/HBK but they did get Benoit/Edge winning the tag titles there. OKC this Thursday was used to book Undertaker return match but they did get to actually be able to see Undertaker first time in a long time.

I think that the main difference now is that any match can have this treatment (Undertaker returns, Chavo open challenge, Eugene vs La Resistance).

In the past, this used to only be about top level matches, and was usually put off until a PPV. There have been more matches made "in two weeks time" recently than ever before. It really is irritating sometimes, especially when you are up for the match that night.

It's because of sweeps.

Another thing is that over the last year we've been having more segment tie ins. For example on Smackdown when Torrie came out during the Angle promo he ordered the match to be next. Like having a promo and someone come out and then the GM makes the match next right there. I hate that, they should just say later tonight so they can fill more time with re-introductions. I hope some of you know what I mean.

Hell, my man, Chris is a smart, smart dude. It simply means he's not interested in dishing out $30-plus every month to watch something that could end up being a big, stinking pile of crap.
