Rick Reilly: Another Victim at Colorado

'If you thought Colorado football recruiting parties were jailbreaks, brace yourself for the allegations made by the only woman ever to play on the team.

As a CU placekicker in 1999, Katie Hnida says she endured a kind of sexual hell you can't imagine. After being verbally abused and molested by teammates, Hnida says, she was raped by one of them.

An honor-roll student, a homecoming queen and an honorable mention all-county kicker at Littleton (Colo.) Chatfield High, Hnida (NYE-da) had dreamed of booting for Colorado. "Football is what makes me breathe," she says. Then-coach Rick Neuheisel invited her to walk on, she accepted and then he took off, leaving her in new coach Gary Barnett's hands. "None of the players wanted her on the team," Barnett remembers. "Basically we were doing her a favor."

On her first day of practice Hnida found out how welcome she was. She says five teammates surrounded her and verbally abused her, making sexually graphic comments. During the season players exposed themselves to her "at least five times," she says. "They'd go, 'Hey, Katie, check this out!'" One player came up from behind, she says, and rubbed his erect penis against her.

Sometimes when the entire team was huddled up, Hnida says, players stuck their hands on her crotch or groped her breasts under her shoulder pads. "She endured more abuse than one person should have to bear," former teammate Justin Bates says. Even as she practiced, players called her vulgar names and one fired footballs at her head.

Why didn't she tell Barnett? "Because I was terrified," she says. "He didn't want me around in the first place. I thought for sure he'd kick me off [the team]."

The worst was yet to come. One summer night Hnida was watching TV at the house of a teammate. "He just starts to kiss me," she recalls. "I told him, 'That's not O.K.' Next thing I know he's on top of me. I told him, 'No!' But he just kept going, 'Shhhhh.' I tried to push him off me, but he outweighed me by 100 pounds." Hnida says he lifted her skirt, pushed aside her panties and penetrated her. She was a virgin. The phone rang, he reached for it, she slipped out from under him and ran.

Why didn't she go to the police? "I was so scared of what he might do to me," she says. "And I didn't want a huge media mess. I was already carrying around so much inside me, I was numb."

Just before the start of the 2000 season, it was clear that Hnida, sick with tonsillitis, was not going to make the roster. She says she fell into "the darkest of dark places."

Worried for his daughter after she had finally told him about some of her hell (but not the rape), Maj. Dave Hnida, an Army surgeon currently stationed in Iraq, went to athletic director Dick Tharp and Barnett about "the cornering, the groping, the name-calling and the football-at-the-head thing," Katie's father says. He got nowhere. "Talking to Barnett was like talking to a wall."

Neither Tharp nor Barnett recalls Dave Hnida saying anything about sexual harassment. "If I'd have heard that, I'd have jumped down somebody's throat," Barnett says. "Not one time did I ever see or hear about anybody treating her wrong. I don't believe she was sexually harassed. I don't believe our players would do that. They'd be in too much trouble with me." Barnett says he gave one player a "tongue-lashing" for making a vulgar comment to Katie.

She dropped out of CU after her sophomore year. She says she was depressed for two years, suffered from insomnia and gave up kicking. Her dad ached for her. "Barnett went on TV and said how these [recent recruiting party] accusations have hurt his family," Dave Hnida says. "I'll show you a hurt family."

Katie went into therapy, enrolled at a junior college and then had the guts to walk on at New Mexico in 2002. Last August she became the first woman to score in Division I football history when she kicked two PATs in the Lobos' 72-8 rout of Texas State-San Marcos.

Meanwhile, three other women alleged they were raped by players or recruits at or following a Colorado football recruiting party in 2001. There have been reports of players hiring strippers for recruits as recently as last month.

So why is Hnida, 22, telling her story now? "Because all the news sent me back into that nightmare," she says. "It made me literally sick. I realized that until I tell my story, I can never heal."

Hnida isn't suing Colorado or pressing charges against former teammates. "I just want to see changes made there," she says.

She also wants a sixth-year exemption from the NCAA, so she can return to the Lobos. "We have 125 great guys on this team, and I haven't had one single incident," Hnida says. "That's because of the standard Coach [Rocky] Long sets here for behavior. There's no b.s."

At Colorado they're majoring in b.s. The denials have piled up like cordwood. You show me a coach who maintains he's unaware of recruiting parties featuring paid strippers, of four alleged rapes, of sexual harassment claims by one of his players against other players, and I'll show you a coach who is hell-bent on not knowing.

Makes this alum want to hide his class ring.'

--------------------------------------------------------------

I actually knew Katie pretty well in high school--we were both on the debate/forensics team (why yes, I was a nerd). I knew the main reason she transferred out of Colorado was because of the harrassment, but the rape revelation was quite shocking when I first read about it. Good to hear Katie's doing better, and I have no clue how CU can recover from all this.

Gary Barnett has proven, once again to be a totally classless prick. If this shit was going on, on his watch, then his ass should be fired. Recruiting parties notwithstanding, this is absolute bullshit.

Agreed. There's only one way CU can recover from all this. Fire everyone involved, strip the football program down to the ground, investigate your other programs to make sure they're clean, and then say, "This will NEVER happen again." Sure, they'll have to endure a few losing seasons before their program recovers, but I'd say it's better than the alternative.

You say "fired", I say "prosecuted" but the sentiment is there.

If they don't get the death penalty, nobody ever will. Wasn't in Alabama that recently came close?

Liberals sometimes claim to believe in personal freedom, but their concept of liberty seems limited to matters related to sex....Yet outside the sexual realm, liberals are downright illiberal. They want to control every aspect of our lives: what we eat, what we smoke, what we drive, how we defend our homes and families, how much of our own money we're allowed to keep.

They did give it to SMU back in the 80's, neutering that program for eternity. Rape won't get the death penalty for a program though. The NCAA will only do it if someone slips up with big money, and even then its only after multiple probations.

This makes Ell Roberson's problems here in K-State Country pretty minor. The really sad thing is the mentality we are producing in far too many athletes. Maybe it's time they quit being special just because they play football or basketball. We are really doing a disservice to these kids and to ourselves.

I think they'd have to get busted and penalized for major violations, then have it happen AGAIN while they are on probation to get the death penalty. That's what happened at SMU.

I found this comment curious:

Why didn't she tell Barnett? "Because I was terrified," she says. "He didn't want me around in the first place. I thought for sure he'd kick me off [the team]."

Looking at the stuff that she says was happening, would being kicked off the team really be such a bad thing? I mean, if similar things were happening to me, the last thing I want to do is to continue being on the "team" (team in quotes, because obviously she wasn't really on the team to begin with, if what she says is true, just on the team in name only). Maybe she had sort of a battered woman's syndrome thing going.

As far as the 'death penalty', assuming we are talking about the NCAA handing down a death penalty, I'm not sure they can. Is Colorado technically violating NCAA rules? Do they actually have a rule that says "There should be no rapes on recruiting visits". It would seem that this would go without saying, and it would be thought the University and the public wouldn't tolerate such behavior, and it wouldn't need NCAA intervention in order to be dealt with.

The reason I bring this up is Tennessee had a situation were accusations were being made about certain grades football players had received. The NCAA investigated, but at the end of the day, they pretty much concluded that it was none of the NCAA's business to determine how schools hand out grades, that it was up to the institution. With that reasoning, it would stand to reason that NCAA only regulates things that directly relate to the sport. I think the only way they would step in is if they say sex is an illegal perk to give to recruits, thus giving Colorado an unfair advantage (or something like that). I'm not sure if they can take any action if it's not against some recruiting rule or something (however, they shouldn't HAVE to. This is ILLEGAL activity. Laws may have been broken, and rights violated, which should be a lot more important that NCAA rules. The university should want to clean this up, and the public should DEMAND it. After all, it's THEIR university).

Well according to her and her father they talked with Barnett about everything but the rape so it's not like she didn't do anything. Of course Barnett denies ever talking to her father or hearing anything from her, but with all the things she says the players were doing he's either blind or stupid.

Well first, no the NCAA did not investigate UT, UT investigated itself and told the NCAA it did nothing wrong. The NCAA never reveals when they are investigating a program. Chances are they could actually be doing a followup to UT's self investigation right now. Major violation there and in the Colorado case would be "lack of institutional control", which is about as bad an offense as you can make with the NCAA. Now they won't be handing out any death penaltys cause they don't have the balls to do that to anyone anymore, but it's likely be something similar to what Auburn or Miami got back in the 90's.

I wondered why Barnett didn't say to her "Look, you're not going to EVER be good enough to be the kicker for a Division I university, so you're just going to thought of as a side show. If you REALLY want to kick at the college level, why don't you transfer to an NAIA school where you might actually be able to compete for a job? If you are just going to be here to be here the guys are going to resent you for it and you probably won't have a very good time, because we are here to WIN FOOTBALL GAMES, not make the girl field goal kicker feel good. If you were good enough to win the job that would be different, but you're not, so that's just how it is."

That was the main point of discussion on the show I listened to this morning. While Barnett denies knowing that any of this crap was going on up to this point, he's still acknowledging that it does go on (Reilly sorta points it out in the article).

I never liked Barnett even long before this mess came up, so I'm hoping his inevitable dismissal somehow leads to the hiring of Romeo Crennel*. And yes, I'm aware that the question of who'll replace Barnett is very trivial when it comes to CU these days.

*wishful thinking

Well what he said is probably true, at least to the extent that a male with the same skill set would never ever be on the team. And he was responding to a reporter that was asking if she was kicked off because she was raped, and he was trying to say 'no, she was kicked off because she wasn't any good', which again is probably pretty much true. That said, Barnett won't win any PR awards with that kind of response, and now is probably not the time to make that point quite as strongly as he did.

Hmm, I haven't heard, is anybody going for monetary gain with these accusations? Because if not, it is looking really bad, because they are getting these things from different people with no apparent ties with each other. It would be hard to believe that all these people just happen to have a vendetta against the Colorado program. Looks bad.

Well, Colorado's going to put Barnett on administrative leave.

BULL-shit. Give him the Shaughnessy treatment... FIRE THIS CLOWN.

Anyway, as far as death penalty, I don't know. This is one hell of a lack of institutional control case.

Well, correct me if I am wrong, but the UNIVERSITY could shut down the program without the NCAA doing it for them. That would show they are serious about not having stupid shit like this go on at thier school.

But, the money would be too big a loss, so it wont happen.
