I thought Bush is a straight talking president. Then why is he having Colin Powell taking his old sweet time getting to Jerusalem, while the fighting in the Palestinian terrorities continue? After saying on Thursday for Israel to stop the fighting "Now"?

Dunno. Maybe he feels kind of foolish sending Powell to Jerusalem to stop a war between a bunch of people who pretty much hate each other, while just around the corner in Afghanistan we're killing people we don't even know.

Nah, it's probably so Powell can get more frequent flyer miles.

Powell is going through the Arab nations to try to get them to denounce Arafat and Palestinian terrorism, and going to them before going straight to their "buddy" Israel is probably a political play that the Administration hopes will appeal to the Arab nations.

Besides, Bush's ultimatum worked--Israel started to withdraw. Of course, the Palestinians just attacked and killed 13 Israeli soldiers, so all bets are probably off again.

If I was cynical I might say that Powell is taking his time so the Israelis can finish up their onslaught before they have to withdraw by Thursday.

Yet still Bush's strategy is better than Tony Blair on my TV every day saying "Withdraw Israel or we'll do nothing!".

All its going to take is a few more suicide attacks like today's on that bus in Israel, and one more big one on America (which is a matter of when, not if) and Israel is going in, kicking ass, and never pulling back. If Palestinians want to win any credibility at this point they would immediately turn to peaceful resistance. Since I don't see that happening any time soon, we may eventually hear plans about re-building the Jewish Temple in Jerusalem once total control is given to Israelies. Sorry to sound like a religious prophecy broadcaster, but this is a real possibility in my view.

(Raiders of the Lost Ark fans may be interested to know that one of the more believable Jewish traditions places the Ark of the Covenant in a cavern beneath the Temple Mount, placed there before the Babylonian invasion in the 500s B.C., where the Islamic Dome of the Rock now sits. Archaeologists and Jewish activists have typically been driven away from doing serious excavation there due to Palestinian pressure, but if there is no more pressure....who knows. Just thought that would be an interesting possibility.)

DMC is quite correct I believe about the "what if" scenario. If this continues and the U.S. sees another attack of any significance by Arab terrorists of any nationality, I have a sense that there may be no more Palestinians left to fight for a state by the time Israel and the U.S. are done. And I think Israel knows this to be the case, and know the more they push things, the better the chances of someone taking it out on U.S. interests out of frustration at the Israeli offensive. So either way they're going to have a clear way to what they want to do.

Not that this would be surprising, but in a Government class I'm taking, when we talked about the media, we polled people on which was fair or unfair, CNN or Fox News.
