So, I just get back my computer from CompUSA, after I sent it in several weeks ago to get it fixed. Sure enough, first chance I get tonight, the same f***ing problem for which I drove an hour and a half to the store to get it fixed IS STILL F***ING HAPPENING!!!! I'm about ready to drive all the way back up to CompUSA with a machine gun to gun them all down (including the Orange County sheriff's deputy posted in the store), but a small part of me wonders if there's one employee in there with kids that I might orphan by doing so.

In short, maybe there are some W's out there who might be able to help me solve this computer problem and, in the process, save those poor kids from being orphaned (but still stick them with a stupid parent).

I have an eMachine with an Athlon XP 2800 processor, 512 MB RAM, 64 MB dedicated to video memory, 160 GB hard drive, running on Windows XP, etc. Should be running like a dream. Problem is, every time I try to run a Quicktime Movie file or WMV or avi file on either Windows Media Player 9 or Quicktime (or try to play a video file from the web), the f***ing computer freezes up on me. Dead stop. Can't do anything except to turn the damn thing off and reboot. I have no freaking clue whatsoever why this is happening. If there's anyone out there who can help me solve this problem (and no, "just don't play video files anymore" is not a solution), I would be quite grateful for your help. Thank you.

Edit: forgot to add my OS

You've tried the Windows Help and Support option?
Have you tried uninstalling and reinstalling MP and QT?
Do you need QT?

Does it start to play and then freeze up halfway through, or does simply opening a video file cause it to hang?

I suspect that your system may be overheating - either the video card or the CPU. Do you have it sitting in a well ventilated area? Try opening the case up and pointing a small household fan at it while playing a video - any better luck?

If you have a spare video card laying around, I'd try swapping that in to see if you still have the problem.

Expanding on Guru's thoughts...

You said it's an eMachine, and you have 64MB of memory "dedicated" to video. That sounds very much like "onboard" video to me.

Anybody I know who have had the "built in" video options, haven't had much joy with them. If that's the case, simply adding a video card of decent quality may do it.

Good Luck!

Thanks for the suggestions, folks.

Upon further review, my computer also seems to be freezing up when browsing the web, for no other reason other than maybe being left on for a certain period. I'm wondering if one or two things is true:
1) My CPU is, in fact, overheating; or
2) CompUSA sold me a lemon, and I need to give them hell about it, like, yesterday.
But thanks again for the suggestions.

The inhibitors haven't been done that I recall, but Forge had created a machine that stripped powers and did a number on Storm during that scary mohawk phase for her.
