Hmmm...no Apple or Windows icons? Interesting.

Anyhow....I want to get a new used laptop, and this one strikes me as a decent deal, but I don't know much about Macs.

The specs:

Apple iBook
1.33 ghz PowerPC G4 processor
12 inch screen
512 mb ram
60 gb hard drive
Mac OS X Tiger
Bluetooth
Airport built-in (for wireless internet)
Microsoft Office 2004

What would I be able to do with this? Can it run Folding@Home? Outside of your usual net browsing, is it good for website design and publishing and/or some games?

I've been a Windows man since, well....Windows 3.1...and my only experience on a Mac was with Macintosh SE computers during high school. So, any help would be really appreciated.

Thanks in advance!

PS: Pictures of the system can be found HERE (craigslist.org)

EDIT: I would imagine that it comes with some form of optical reader; the review on CNET would suggest that it comes with an internal DVD-ROM...so I"m guessing the author forgot to mention it.

My advice is that you avoid the G4 laptops. There were tons of problems with them.

CRZ had one though, I am just speaking from hear-say. Do a google search on the model name that you are looking at to confirm for yourself.

The MacBook is nice, the G3 was nice, but my friend Mike had multiple issues with his G4.

Is this a passive-aggressive way of asking me to create these icons?

Anyway, I don't know where he heard I had one of these. I got the first G3 desktop (beige) in Jan. 1998 and then didn't upgrade until I finally got my G5 Powerbook in 2005. (I'll probably get something new when Leopard comes out.)

My brother-in-law had/has? an iBook and the thing was a rock. He did mobile DJ stuff with it and never had a problem. I am thinking he still uses it on occasion.

$500 is a good chunk of change but if you think of it as "renting" a computer until the next one, you can amortize/rationalise accordingly. (Hey, it lasted me for 5 months, that's only $100 a month!)

You CAN run the "console" version of F@H for MacOS, but it will be EXTREMELY slow compared to the PC versions. Especially with such a small amount of RAM - in fact, that's barely enough to do much of anything. (On the other hand, RAM is a cheap DIY upgrade, assuming this version can handle more.)

I can't get to the Apple store right now (Hmm.) so I can't see what they're currently offering as refurbs or what they're going for.

New Mac Mini refresh today - check Apple for details. $599 gets you a very nice machine with a modern OS and modern processor.

Thanks for the information; I am interested in the Mac Mini, but since I do a lot of travelling, a laptop is much better suited for my needs.

I'd been trolling a few Mac boards and some people have suggested a G5 Powermac or something to that effect...are they good systems?

Thanks;

Oliver

I've always been very happy with mine. I got a 15", as the 17" didn't seem to travel as well...not that I take it many places, but still. If I were purchasing used today, I might go for the bigger one if the difference in price wasn't too much.

EDIT: For slightly newer options, Apple has 13" MacBook refurbs for under $999 (store.apple.com)

I have a 17" MacBook Pro. It rules.

Mine only has one profile, but it has .default after it. In the profile there is a bookmark backups folder. If you check which one has the bookmarks you want, try changing the name of the correct one so it has .default?
