What's the right move here?

If you're Conan, don't you want to wait to do your first post-NBC appearance on your own new show (presuming you have one), for maximum impact?

But if it'll be a while before that show comes on the air, I'm not sure you want to disappear for six months.

I guess it would depend on how quickly Fox can (or is willing to) get a talk show up and running. Conan could be back on the air for May sweeps if he and Fox can work out a deal quickly enough. But if not Fox, then....Comedy Central? Actually, given that Fox is the only network available to Coco right now, I could see them try to give him a lowball offer.

This is just my opinion, of course, but in retrospect, it seems the right move may have been for Conan to just accept the move from 11:35 to 12:05. That way he stays on the air (i.e., stays visible) keeps building his audience, keeps dissing Jay & NBC, and looks for his next opportunity while still drawing a paycheck (not to mention, while his staff keeps drawing a paycheck).

Of course, I'm already stated that the right move for Jay (in my opinion) would have been to tell NBC "Thanks, but no thanks" at re-hosting The Tonight Show. So much for that.

But if this is really it, then I think Conan's best move (if he doesn't already have his next gig lined up) is to stay visible. So do Letterman, do Kimmel, hell, do 60 Minutes; do what you have to do to stay in the public consciousness. At least, in my humble opinion.

Two networks that I'd like to see a new Conan O'Brien show on that I don't think have been mentioned yet:

AMC or HBO.

Both are giving the broadcast networks fits with their dramas. Another front to challenge them on would be nightly late-night chat. And an unrestricted Conan HAS to be better than that Joe Buck Live monstrosity, right? That's a no-brainer!

Howard Stern said he had been approached about appearing on Conan next week. He said he'd probably only do it if *he* got the first post-interview. Either way, it should be an interesting final week.

I would love to see Conan go to the 101 on DirecTV. Kick Comcast and NBC in the nuts at the same time, be free of terrestrial limits.

It won't happen but I can dream.

You know, spazzing out and multiple uses of profanity sort of undermines your whole "lighten up" thing.

Anyway, didn't Conan take a few months off in-between his Late Night and Tonight Show gigs? A month or two might not make a difference in things.

As for WHERE he goes, any place that lets him be awesome. Comedy Central could prove interesting, and would certainly make things interesting (a Stewart > Colbert > Conan line-up? Any order of that would be interesting).

So, instead of staying at NBC at 12:05am with a network TV audience, your plan is for him to move to Comedy Central so he can be on 12:00am with a basic cable audience? Really?

Is being on 5 mins sooner worth the smaller audience?

Its really too bad that Conan couldn't find another gig right away and be able to keep the studio he's in now, it's just an awesome looking place.

I really thought with the way NBC went all out for that studio compared to Jay's Tonight Show studio, that he was definitely in it for the long haul.

I barely watch late night TV, but Leno has always been an unfunny douche, so that may cloud my vision.

He couldn't pull any viewers at 10ET, in PRIME TIME, with tons of promos every night. He insisted on the stupid format of ten minutes of bad jokes, man on the street, a guest, and a forum of people making 'jokes' about current events.

He was sitting on a potential gold mine and instead of making it a good show, they did Late Show Lite. The suits at NBC can point the finger at Conan for low ratings all they want, but Leno wasn't setting the world on fire with his show either.

Conan would be great on AMC or on the 101. That would be great.
But, I think in the end, Fox gives him a show, and will let him sail on his own. He has to be better than Magic Johnson, and Chevy Chase, right?

And, Kimmel..... good God he was all over Jay. That was just classic.

I said "any order of that", which meant that it could have been Conan > Stewart > Colbert or Stewart > Conan > Colbert or Colbert > Conan > Stewart or misc etc. I was not implying it would be awesome if Conan went at midnight on CC, that would be decidly not awesome.

Not sure which night -- am thinking Tuesday -- Dave & Paul were doing a bit of banter about "Hey, Paul, what do you think NBC would have to pay Conan to buy out the contract?" The jokingly bantered number, IIRC, was $40mil. But that was all just totally joking, unfounded banter...

I thought the prevailing logic was that a 10:00p live comedy show was an epic fail idea no matter who was hosting or what exact format they used. It was basically a cost-cutting maneuver by NBC to avoid paying the big bucks it would cost to create five hours of drama or reality shows, which is what viewers really want. They figured they could leverage Jay's existing popularity and they failed miserably. I'm not sure Conan or Letterman or anyone else could have done a significantly better job in that situation.

Wouldn't that mean Conan would be bumping Stewart and Colbert out of THEIR time slots? I know their shows aren't as well-established as The Tonight Show or Late Night, but wouldn't that be kind of hypocritical of Conan?

I went into it with no expectations and came away entertained. This was a very Chow heavy film. It was more action than comedy, but Alan had some really funny moments. 21% on Rotten Tomatoes seems pretty low. It's not that bad.
