As funny as the last next few weeks will be with their monologues, it will never beat the weeks leading up to Dave leaving for CBS. Every joke was a shot at GE and the NBC brass while he was phoning it in.

The thing about that clip that strikes me the most is that Conan doesn't seem to be blaming Leno for all of this. Perhaps it's just professional courtesy towards a colleague, but I got the sense that he is holding NBC responsible far more than he is blaming Leno.

I got that sense too. But if you've watched Jay and Conan for long enough you know that they take shots at NBC on a regular basis. So it's hard to say who (if anyone) Conan blames judging by his on-air comments alone.

NBC's made a decision, no link yet, because the announcement is ongoing, but it looks like, starting mid-February:

11:35- Untitled Conan O'Brien show
12:05- The Tonight Show with Jay Leno
1:05- Jimmy Fallon

So, Jay goes, tanks, and Conan gets the shaft. Way to go NBC.

You sure you haven't swapped Conan and Jay up there? The report everyone seems to be citing, on an LA Times blog (latimesblogs.latimes.com), has it that way.

(Still no news about Carson Daly or Poker After Dark. I'm getting worried!)

They should just move Poker After Dark to 1135 ET, and have the game be an endless game between Leno, Eubanks, Conan, Richter, Fallon, and Daly.

So how much of this is because of scheduling and how much of it is because DVRs and Hulu have changed how people watch late night TV?

I know that we don't make a big point to watch it anymore. I DVR the shows I consistently like and watch them when I feel like, or if people are talking about something I'll go find the clip.

I've always like Conan more than Jay, but the new show hasn't clicked. I love having Andy back, but it feels like they are holding back on what they really want to do. I haven't seen a huge number of shows but the guests have been awful. Conan works best as an interviewer when he can tease or mess around with guests a little and it seems like he gets less of that kind of guest now.

Can't tell if you're being serious or not but it really does surprise me how it seems no one cares what happens to either of those shows. I guess at such a late hour no one really watches?

Don't count on it. NBC issued their order for a record number of pilots, which was when all the murmurs about Jay getting canceled started.

"Hello, Law & Order producers? We need you to fill another five hours of programming a week with spinoffs. They need to start airing in a month. K. Bye."

30 minutes? What's Leno's show going to be...a monologue and a quick guest?

Just let Leno go. Develop programming in the 10pm hour to get the affiliates' news ratings back up and see if Conan's ALSO go up. His ratings woes could easily be linked to Leno too.

Another link from PopEater.com talking about the new late night line-up

I haven't been watching Fallon's monologue lately. Has he been saying anything about potentially getting bumped back half an hour? And I second Mr. Heel II's questioning of the format for Jay's new show. Carson Daly does half an hour (or at least he used to) and the few times I've watched it always seemed incredibly rushed. I guess Jay could cut a bunch of his segments but I have a hard time seeing him permanently getting rid of Jaywalking and Headlines.

He seems to be alright with it. "I'll do my show at 3 in the morning... I'm just happy to have a job." ""Time doesn't really matter to me. We're in a different age. Time is like... I don't even know what time 'Jersey Shore' is on. It doesn't matter - I'll see it."

The thing is, Fallon's grown on me a lot sense he started. He's gradually (much like Conan did) coming up with his own style of doing things. I'm glad he has this attitude, as it means it's likely he'll keep Late Night. And he's right; I watch all the clips/segments the day after so really, most of his viewers will get around to seeing his show eventually anyway.

And really, of course Conan would be pissed. But this article may point towards how pissed he was this weekend

I think NBC, Leno, and Fallon knows this, and they know how important it is to keep everyone on board (hence why Leno called Fallon).

Conan quit. CONAN QUIT! Fuck you, Jay Leno and NBC! This is a Goddamned atrocity!

Conan O’Brien Says He Won’t Do ‘Tonight Show’ Following Leno
By BILL CARTER

Conan O’Brien says he will not do “The Tonight Show” if it airs at 12:05 a.m. He released the following statement Tuesday afternoon:

People of Earth:

In the last few days, I’ve been getting a lot of sympathy calls, and I want to start by making it clear that no one should waste a second feeling sorry for me. For 17 years, I’ve been getting paid to do what I love most and, in a world with real problems, I’ve been absurdly lucky. That said, I’ve been suddenly put in a very public predicament and my bosses are demanding an immediate decision.

Six years ago, I signed a contract with NBC to take over The Tonight Show in June of 2009. Like a lot of us, I grew up watching Johnny Carson every night and the chance to one day sit in that chair has meant everything to me. I worked long and hard to get that opportunity, passed up far more lucrative offers, and since 2004 I have spent literally hundreds of hours thinking of ways to extend the franchise long into the future. It was my mistaken belief that, like my predecessor, I would have the benefit of some time and, just as important, some degree of ratings support from the prime-time schedule. Building a lasting audience at 11:30 is impossible without both.

But sadly, we were never given that chance. After only seven months, with my Tonight Show in its infancy, NBC has decided to react to their terrible difficulties in prime-time by making a change in their long-established late night schedule.

Last Thursday, NBC executives told me they intended to move the Tonight Show to 12:05 to accommodate the Jay Leno Show at 11:35. For 60 years the Tonight Show has aired immediately following the late local news. I sincerely believe that delaying the Tonight Show into the next day to accommodate another comedy program will seriously damage what I consider to be the greatest franchise in the history of broadcasting. The Tonight Show at 12:05 simply isn’t the Tonight Show. Also, if I accept this move I will be knocking the Late Night show, which I inherited from David Letterman and passed on to Jimmy Fallon, out of its long-held time slot. That would hurt the other NBC franchise that I love, and it would be unfair to Jimmy.

So it has come to this: I cannot express in words how much I enjoy hosting this program and what an enormous personal disappointment it is for me to consider losing it. My staff and I have worked unbelievably hard and we are very proud of our contribution to the legacy of The Tonight Show. But I cannot participate in what I honestly believe is its destruction. Some people will make the argument that with DVRs and the Internet a time slot doesn’t matter. But with the Tonight Show, I believe nothing could matter more.

There has been speculation about my going to another network but, to set the record straight, I currently have no other offer and honestly have no idea what happens next. My hope is that NBC and I can resolve this quickly so that my staff, crew, and I can do a show we can be proud of, for a company that values our work.

Have a great day and, for the record, I am truly sorry about my hair; it’s always been that way.

Yours,

Conan

I've never seen Conan be as viscious as he was on last night's Tonight Show. Dave Letterman-in-the-early-90s level of humor towards NBC... And then it turns out Dave himself took plenty of shots at NBC too last night as well.

Here's Dave:

Judging from this I didn't get the impression he quit.

I take it as: They want to move him to 12:05. He is saying no and awaiting their next move. He's hoping they give in to his demands and decide not to move The Tonight Show.
