I'm considering an iPhone and have never had one before. I see that AT&T offers 3 data plans: 200MB/month, 2GB/month and 4GB/month. My question is: Can anyone give me an idea of how much surfing/downloading/e-mail/etc. time these plans are?
I'd probably be downloading apps left and right and surfing the web quite a bit. Would I hit the 4GB mark pretty quickly each month? Is 200MB for someone who hardly ever surfs/does e-mail? I know the Ws here are pretty tech-saavy.
(Also, should I wait for the iPhone 5 to be released? It seems like one of these comes out every year, so whether I get an iPhone 4 now or and iPhone 5 later, I'd guess they'd both be out of date in a year anyways.)
I changed my wife's and mine from the unlimited plans recently after reviewing our usage on the AT&T site. She uses it for email and limited surfing, not much else so was never above 200MB. Me, I use mine constantly for surfing, download maybe one app a week though I don't play online type games and email though not a large volume. I don't come close to 2GB, in fact I'm well under 1GB.
I didn't know AT&T had a 4GB plan. A quick search reveals that it only applies to their tethering plan, which is $45/month.
Awesome. Thanks!
Do you have any opinion on the iPhone 5? I keep hearing June/July release but I don't hear much in terms of rumored new features that would make me want to wait until then.
EDIT: Thanks, Wade! Any opinions you have on waiting for iPhone 5 are welcomed, too.

I do not. I'm an Android guy (patiently waiting for the Thunderbolt). But I have played with my gf's iPhone 3GS, then 4, and haven't really noticed much difference in terms of what I used it for (same as you: surfing, apps).
I guess the big thing now is dual-core processors, which is rumored for the 5. It's hard to have an opinion on that without knowing how they will affect the phone's battery life.
I'm no techie, but my guess is that you'd be fine with the 4.
We're both still using the 3gs, didn't see a huge reason to upgrade to the 4. My contract is up this month and I think I'll wait until this summer to see what 5 has. If it's not a huge leap over the 4, I'll probably upgrade to the 4 since it will likely see a big price drop.
I guess my point is you should wait until the iPhone 5 comes out to see what it has and for the price drops on older models.

This is what I do with my phone. Mine is a Droid X over on Verizon, but bytes are bytes and I'm in the 300-500MB range. Unless you're doing a fair bit of streaming video, it's tough to do over 2GB a month.
200 MB is mostly for very mild users, but I'd bet a heavy user could get by with that plan if they used a wireless network at home and work and where ever they mainly were. Those bytes are still all free.

Totally agree. The hype for the new device makes the older ones better bargains if you're willing to wait.
While I have (and sometimes use) streaming apps like NPR's news and music ones, Netflix and Indie 103, I honestly can't think of any time I might've gone over the 2GB mark. But that's mostly because I save my heavy data use for when I'm over Wi-Fi. (Also, while I have the Netflix app, I've used it precisely once, at work, using their public wireless.)
