I am at work now accessing the internet, but from home I can only get limited access.

I get email fine. I can access my email server at work from home. I can access altonbrown.com

Anything else it seems I get "waiting for..." messages. It doesn't time out. It just keeps trying.

It's both the desktop and the laptop. I have tried the power cycling they suggest numerous times.

The internet provider is stumped and can't come out to the house until Friday at the earliest.

Someone suggested it may be a virus and to try PCTools Spy Ware Doctor and I will try that tonight as I downloaded a copy onto a CD to bring home.

Does anyone have any other ideas I can try?

I'm assuming you're using Windows at the moment. I neat trick I like to try sometimes is going into Safe Mode with Networking and seeing if the browsing works in there.

While at work, download Mozilla onto your storage device as well. While troubleshooting web browser issues it never hurts to have two browsers to test with.

If you're using IE 7, also try resetting/nuking IE 7 to the default settings (Tools > Internet Options > Advanced "Reset...").

Hope this helps!

Pieman, if you can get to one website, but no others and other internetty things like email, I do suspect some stuff.

First, while you are still at work, download Ccleaner and take it home - gets all your internet stuff cleaned up.

second, when you get home, if you're using IE - you want to make sure your objects are empty - I use IE6, so for me, that is tools, then internet options, then General, then temporary Internet files - settings - in there, click view objects

Delete anything in there - the system will recreate it if needed.

good luck

We'll be back right after order has been restored here in the Omni Center.

The provider tech had me do this to no avail.

I use both browsers at home, but mainly Firefox.

So now I have CCleaner and SpyWare Doctor to try. Anything else I should be attempting?

Maybe DNS isn't working? Try going to an IP address instead of a name. Like, if you go to our IP of http://198.145.142.93, you should see a page proclaiming "It works!" If you can get THERE, but not to, say, http://CRZ.net/ (which is what's AT that IP), then you need to fiddle with your name servers until you get one that resolves for you.

(nslookup could tell you this as well.)

The reason I think this way is that if certain sites worked, they might be in your cache, but you might not be getting any new resolution results. Of course, we'd hope that The W would be working for you then, knowing you're here 24 hours a day.....

Alrighty! I am leaving work now to try all these things.

Hopefully, I will post again in a couple hours and you'll know that I will be here 24 hours a day! If you don't see me post again, have a Merry Christmas everybody!

A couple of other quick items:

- Speaking of DNS stuff, you can go to "Run" and type in ipconfig /flushdns to reset the DNS revolver cache.

- Go to Run again and type in netsh winsock reset and restart your system.

Let us know how it works :)

Thank you all for the help!

After four days without home internet, our provider figured out it was something on their end. They said they would be trying some more stuff on Monday, so it might happen again, though.
