As we all enjoy the MLB games featuring competing teams of different leagues, I think back to the recent RAW featuring both rosters' wrestlers awaiting the draft. Eddy fought Triple H in the main event. A nice match that sparkled not just because of champ Eddy, but because it isn't a match we're likely to see each week on either show.

So why not a few interleague shows mixing up the rosters OR a true joint PPV? The PPV could be built up via a points system (and I can hear the eyes glaze over already) where a RAW/SD midcarder could earn the right to face one of the singles champs on the other show. A tag-team could earn the right to leapfrog their fellow roster opponents and take a shot at the other show's champs. And here's the kicker, if he/they win, the opponents switch rosters. If the challenger loses, they go back. It worked well for Benoit after Royal Rumble.

I enjoyed the Kane and Brock appearances on SD and RAW, respectively, because they were so unusual for shows that easily fall into ruts. That's why I'd like to emphasize keeping these shows or PPV few and far between. I like the separate rosters, but "interleague" play allows performers to show something new against an uncommon opponent and it provides blah feuds and performers a way out and a fresh start.

{clarified the challenge options}

I think it's about time they started looking at that, for sure. Raw and SmackDown are definitely separate brands now, and it took them two years to make them THAT distinct.

The trick is, they'd have to make it a special event. As you pointed out, a joint PPV would be cool. Even better would be a well-planned, well-thought-out "InVasion" style storyline between the brands. Note I said "well planned" in there...

How about this:

Each brand has to build a "team" to face the opposing brand's "team". Each team would consist of: 1 tag team, and 2 or 3 singles. In order to make the team, you'd have to earn a spot. Hold a mini-tournament over a couple weeks on each show leading up to the PPV (would be a normal joint-brand PPV) to determine who makes the teams. It would be a good way to keep the midcard guys busy (plus get more of them TV time), plus you could spin off regular feuds according to how the tournaments unfold.

At the PPV, each individual win by the team earns a point (if the teams have an even # of members, make the tag match worth 2 points), with the winning team splitting a jackpot. If that's not enough, maybe give each individual winner on each team a "favor" owed from each brand GM as a "thanks" for loyalty to the brand (obviously guys would need to put aside their heel/face characters in support of the brand).

The problem with doing a brand vs. brand matchup would be possible damage to the lockerroom morales. It's pretty obvious they favor Raw over SD right now, so you'd have to be careful with how it is booked so as to not piss off 1 of the rosters.

It could be booked along the same lines that the recent TNA World Cup tournament was done; gauntlet matches, elimination tag matches, gimmick matches and so forth. That way more people could be involved as opposed to just 5 or 6 from each show.

It would make for strange alliances as well, and as was stated earlier, lead to feuds within the show. Maybe Benoit/Triple H/Kane vs. Undertaker/JBL/Angle or something like that.

I was tailoring it to a PPV with other "regular" matches on it, as opposed to a stand-alone brand-vs-brand PPV. I'm not sure I'd want to make the PPV solely about that, since that means putting all (or most) other storylines on hold. Plus, it's unclear how well the PPV would sell under this premise.

You realize that the instant you mention Teams and a Point System in Wrestling, the words Team Challenge Series and the ignominious demise of the American Wrestling Association comes racing to mind.

The idea of 'favors' was used last year at Survivor Series when Bischoff's team knocked off Austin's team.

I'll beat a deadhorse here and state that if they wanted to go with an annual battle between members of each brand, WarGames:The Match Beyond would be the ideal place.

The average WWE fan probably hasn't even heard of the AWA.

And the reason I used favors was to give motivation if 1 team has 2 guys that are currently feuding. Why would the heel try to win to put money in the face's pocket (or vice versa)? Give him a goal, and then he has a logical reason to go for the win.

Ah...familiar concept.

A while back, I proposed that the Survivor Series every year be based on the idea of RAW vs. Smackdown, for "bragging rights." ("The #1 brand in Sports Entertainment...")

My system had there being two 8-man Elimination matches, with each team captained by a wrestler of the GM's choosing. He would select his squad, and they would face the other brand's squad in a match where each fall would be worth 10 points. (Thus, the winning team would earn 40 points, but the losing team could earn between 0 and 30 points.)

In addition, the divas from each brand would face each other in a 6-Woman Elimination Match, with each fall also worth 10 points. (30 points for the winner, with between 0 and 20 points available to the losing team.)

Tag Team and Heavyweight titleholders would also face each other, in winner-take-all 20- and 25-point matches. So while the final match would likely decide the winner, it wouldn't necessarily lead to victory, as even a 30 point lead going into the main event is insurmountable.

I liked the idea of restoring the Survivor Series as a "special event" pay-per-view, with the bookers forced to write their way into intrigue that wouldn't necessarily conclude at the event. Some feuds would be put on hold, as rivals might have to begrudgingly team up. Other feuds, like tag and heavyweight title feuds, could be resolved right before the PPV, as a title change could alter the face of the contending teams. And some feuds could be teased across brands, as dueling Titantron promos could build anticipation for possible confrontations. It could be done, and it could be cool.

There could be enticements, like an "MVP" award that could be traded for a title shot, or threatening to fire enemies who attack each other while teammates.

All and all, it would be an interesting idea, and in an age of multiple PPV months and short buildups, it could be something to look forward to at the end of the year.
