Bobby Cox came out in support of instant replay (sports.espn.go.com) for at least tough home run calls, and Joe Torre agreed with him yesterday (nydailynews.com).

Not exactly earth-shattering, but still an interesting consideration. Selig, apparently, is against it, and the managers are half divided on the issue. Why not try replay for a season? Sure, baseball considers itself the last bastion of tradition (shyeah), but after putting interleague play in, as well as the All-Star Game winner/home field thing, shouldn't MLB be more apt to try these "new-fangled ideas"?

If replay were restricted just to fair-or-foul home run calls, as well as perhaps fan interference, I'm all for a trial. Just leave safe-or-out base calls and balls-and-strikes to the men in blue.

Agreed. I get the need for replay in the NFL, but the challenge system they have is abused. A potential game changing play, like a home run or a touchdown, fine, get it right. But if it's going to start nitpicking and drag the game to a halt on marginal plays, I don't want any part of it. I'd rather have an exciting game with the occasional human mistake than one that takes four and a half hours to play but gets everything right.

And yet, with the limited amount of challenges allowed to each coach, it is their choice if they want to spend those challenges on small plays with the knowledge they might not have them for the big ones.

Also, big plays and small plays is all in the eye. I've personally seen more games hinge on whether a first down was attained or not then whether a big play suceeded or not. My personal opinion is that, with the amount of effort each player and team puts out on the field, this effort shouldn't be for naught because of a screwed up call.

I wouldn't mind seeing a system like the NFL, where each manager gets a limited amount of plays to review, so as to keep the game moving. Then, they get to decide whether to review a safe at first call, with the danger of not being able to review a foul or safe home run.

No, because interleague play and the home field/all-star connection were both stupid.

As is instant replay in baseball. Leave it the hell alone.

Replay robs us the chance to make media figures out of morons like Jeffrey Maier and Steve Bartman.

Yes, lets go back to the tradition of yore, where pitchers tell the hitters where the ball will be thrown to, no helmets, no All-Star Games, ties, and day games only.

I agree that the All-Star Game winner getting home field idea isn't a great one, but interleague is enjoyable to a point. 6 Yankee/Met games are beyond overkill, and I would have had every fourth year having no interleague games, but I wouldn't call it a bad idea. Replay, for me, would work well if the managers (re Messenoir) had 2 challenges per game or so. I just figured that if half of the managers are calling for it, especially guys like Torre, Cox, and Alou, surely the idea has merit.

I think we need to go back to the days when spit balls were legal. Hitters are too soft today.
