I apologize if this has been answered before. I couldn't find anything concrete in my search or in the faq. It's not super important, just a question I had while being bored and dicking around. So what's the difference between the two, and why the disparity in numbers and votes between them?
Instant rating is how YOU have been rated by others. Average rating given is what you have rated others. The votes are how many you have given and received for either category.
Whenever I think about it I have been deleting the ratings I've given out, so I can start over with a clean slate but a lot of the people I've rated are gone so I never stumble upon a lot of them.

So simple. In all the years I've been here, that never crossed my mind. Thanks for the clarification!
Do people still use this? I don't think I've changed any of my ratings in years. I've surely forgotten our secret formula by now! (It's probably easy enough to figure out in the code...MAYBE)

That time you did a reset on all the ratings, I went back and gave somebody who hadn't been active for years another zero. Thus making it an important board feature.

Oops, snuck by me. We rolled all them zeroes over last night with a visit from our Russian friend YandexBot during the "mostly bots" hour. Closest users on either side were JustinShapiro (-16) and OndaGrande (+64).
