I must admit to not keeping up with the news on games companies, but I was wondering if anyone could supply me with info on what has happened at Eidos? They seem to have completely screwed up their major games.
Tomb Raider The previous sequels had been slated but we got told the new game would re-invent Lara. Instead, after nearly a year of delays, we get the same ol' crappy controls and a lot of pissed of fans.
Championship Manager 4 The very popular soccer/football management game was updated to a lot of hype. However, having only played it for short periods at a mate's house due to my out-of-date machine (oh, but in 6 months...), I can safely say it is the buggiest release I have ever seen. We discovered a way to sign players without paying a transfer fee within 1/2 an hour of first playing it. Now, to make the game remotely playable, you have to download a patch which is 80Mb in size (and not many UK residents have broadband access).
It does seem odd that a company that was building quite a rep would have two major releases get universally slated.

Well I don't know if Eidos was ever really a good gaming company (I never was a Tomb Raider fan), but at least the flop of the new Tomb Raider game allows Paramount to blame Eidos for the flop of the new Tomb Raider movie.

Apparently, the new Tomb Raider game is recieving so much criticism/blame, that the division at Eidos that developed it (Core Design) has been removed from any further Tomb Raider projects and the property has been assigned to the Division that has been responsible for the Legacy of Kain series (Crystal Dynamics). I'd wager that the problem is that the game was rushed for release to coincide with the movie as well as for Eidos to beat certain fiscal deadlines. As a result, the game sucked when it didn't have to, the movie sucked as expected, and no one is happy with anything.

The worst thing about the latest Tomb Raider public-Beta-pretending-to-be-a-game is that as buggy and obviously unfinished as it is, it'd already been pushed back at least once as I recall... meaning that what shipped had EXTRA time to be worked on. Eidos made the right decision, giving Tomb Raider to another studio. Core doesn't appear to be capable of making a working game any more.
On an Eidos-related note, which studio is working on Thief III? If it's Core, I want to have plenty of time to gather a torch-wielding mob.
