Wow, a whole show of blown opportunities and bullshit.

Sting vs. Kurt Angle: This is to determine the #1 contender. I read that they're giving away this first-ever, PPV-quality match because they want to pop a rating to help their negotiation position with Spike. I'm going to predict that it doesn't work, and that the show will do a 1.1 or so, same as always. And even if more people do tune in, they might tune out again two minutes later when the match ends in a no-contest due to the interference of the Christian Coalition.

Match was fine while it lasted -- watching Sting Stinger Splash Angle actually made me think, "wow, weird," which I hadn't anticipated. The beatdown after the match is focused on Angle, including an implant DDT on a chair.

I have to wonder, though -- I'm not sure that Christian has thought this through. If there's a #1 contender's match, and the current champ interferes and gets it thrown out -- doesn't that always result in a 3-way for the title?

Jerry Lynn & Petey Williams vs. Senshi & Shark Boy vs. Alex Shelley & Kaz vs. Black Machismo and Sonjay Dutt: Okay, the winning team takes on Sabin in a 3-way for the X Division title at Sacrifice. That's fine. The goofy part is that you are NOT ALLOWED to tag your own partner in this match. More on that in a second.

There's a great part where Williams is fighting Kaz, and Kaz's partner Shelley comes in and spits water on Williams, and then goes back to his corner. Williams runs over and grabs Shelley -- Shelley is all, "that's a tag!" and he runs in. Kaz immediately lies down and Shelley goes for the pin! Everyone comes in to break it up, of course, but it was a nice bit.

After that, they apparently switch to lucha rules and ignore tags altogether. This pisses me off. I mean, it would anyway, but I am baffled by the decision to make special rules about who you can tag -- they put an explanatory graphic on the screen, even! -- in a match where tags are going to be, literally, 100% ignored for the second half of the match. Why are they going out of their way to insult my intelligence?

Anyway, Machismo gets the pin, which, for some stupid reason, pisses off Dutt, even though it means that Dutt and Machismo will be in the 3-way with Sabin at Sacrifice.

Okay, a while ago I predicted that Jeff Jarrett would be the fifth man on Team Angle, and that he would be Eric Young's secret friend, because I figured that one of those would have to be right. I didn't think that JJ would actually book himself to be both. And yet.

This segment pissed me off even more than the last one. I realize that nothing gets a good pop out of the crowd like a face attacking a woman -- it's been that way for at least as long as I've been watching. I just really, really wish that companies wouldn't pander to it.

This was a particularly heinous example, with Young kicking Miss Brooks in the stomach and powerbombing her, followed by JJ grabbing her by the hair and then smashing her over the head with his guitar -- this while Tenay and West cheered him on, screaming "Get her with the guitar!" "Just level her! She's helpless!!!" Fucking repulsive.

Team 3D vs. Tomko and Scott Steiner: LAX tries to interfere but blows it badly, leading to 3D pinning Tomko and retaining. LAX and Tomko/Steiner brawl after the match -- are those two team going to feud? 'Cause that would be...pretty weird.

Paparazzi Productions -- Shelley and Backlund are going for a walk. Sabin jumps out of a tree. Yeah, I dunno.

Christian Cage vs. Sting: I forgot to mention, after Cage interfered in the first match, Cornette decided that he would have to defend his title tonight, against Sting. Of course, this match ALSO ends in a DQ, as Angle comes down and starts beating on Cage.

After the match, Angle chases off the Christian Coalition with Sting's bat until Sting takes the bat away and hits Angle in the stomach with it.

This was one of those shows that made me seriously question why I'm watching.

Because it's not like Miss Brooks conned Eric into signing his life away to Roode or anything.

Heel managers have been getting attacked by faces for decades. What, exactly, makes Brooks different? (And no, "she's a woman" isn't an acceptable answer.)

It's a perfectly acceptable answer considering the violence towards her was so ridiculously OTT. What makes Young and Jarrett such good guys if they're willing to repeatedly hit a woman? How can Tenay and West act morally superior in other instances when they're practically salivating to see Ms. Brooks get physically destroyed?

It'd be one thing if this were Brooks getting bent over and spanked, like they usually do with things like this. It's still demeaning and childish, but at least it's not out-and-out nasty. Or even if it Young finally snapping of his own accord after months of beration. At least then the violence would be organic, rather than just button-pushing boo/cheer bullshit. But Jarrett has no real beef with Brooks other than her manipulating his supposed friend, and he's willing to totally physically destroy a woman over that? It's a real problem with postmodern wrestling booking - the faces act just as shitty as the heels, and we're supposed to accept it just "because". There's nuance to these antiheroes any more.

And it's double annoying, as I actually really like the prospect of Jarrett feuding with Roode. But the execution defies logic, and is really kinda grating.

To those who say people wouldn't look; they wouldn't be interested; they're too complacent, indifferent and insulated, I can only reply: There is, in one reporter's opinion, considerable evidence against that contention. But even if they are right, what have they got to lose? Because if they are right, and this instrument is good for nothing but to entertain, amuse and insulate, then the tube is flickering now and we will soon see that the whole struggle is lost. This instrument can teach, it can illuminate; yes, and it can even inspire. But it can do so only to the extent that humans are determined to use it to those ends. Otherwise it is merely wires, and lights, in a box.-Edward R. Murrow

Wait........someting over the top happened on a professional wrestling program? I'M SHOCKED! SHOCKED AND APPALLED!

Repeatedly? I saw ONE powerbomb (a godawful one I might add; Eric should NEVER do that move again) and ONE guitar shot, where are you gettting "repeatedly" from?

Face announcers watching a heel manager get dismantled. How many times has JR celebrated when, say, Cena FUs Estrada?

1. Yeah, that's a great way for a face to "get" a heel that's been tormenting them......a good, hard paddling! Eric should've given her an indian burn, followed by Jarrett giving her an atomic wedgie, THAT'LL LEARN HER!

2. Um, the whole "Young finally snapping"........THAT'S WHAT HAPPENED. After being treated like an unwanted dog for the past several months(nevermind how much sense that didn't make; Roode wanted to be a big multimedia star, but people hated him and loved Eric, so he signs Eric to a personal services contract, and..........treats him like shit. Buh?) Eric flipped and attacked the heels that had been tormenting him.

3. Again, where are you getting "totally physically destroy"? ONE GUITAR SHOT. UNO GUITARO SHOTO.

Your real problem is this: Had that been Tom Brooks, or Tony Brooks, you wouldn't be bitching. If you are a professional wrestling heel manager, you're going to be attacked by a face on a periodic basis. Nature of the beast.

That makes one of us. Not saying the matches will suck, they won't, but "Jeff Jarrett: Face" is right up there with "Randy Orton: Main Eventer" under the heading "Prospects I outright refuse to accept".

This dicussion is moot for three reasons:
1. Sure, it's potentially offensive, but this isn't anything we haven't seen regularly in professional wrestling over the past decade plus.
2. The real issue is that Eric powerbombed her, a MANAGER/VALET, and a minute or two later she was up like nothing had happened. THEN she gets hit with the guitar shot.
3. This storyline is woefully stupid and nobody outside of the "Impact Zone" gives a crap.

You know, every month or so I hear how there was a decent episode of Impact, and I'm suckered into watching the follow-up. You'd think I would have learned my lesson by now, huh?

This show had me filled with questions, and not the "boy, I wonder where they're going with this" type of questions.

For example, why even bother advertising and having Sting vs. Angle? Anybody who tunes in to see the match is going to be invariably disappointed with a DQ finish, even if it is building to something (and the jury's still out on that one). So basically, as a company, all they managed to do was frustrate potential new viewers to the product. If they wanted to do an injury angle with Angle, why waste time with a match at all, then? These are the type of things that people should be asking whenever they hear somebody in the company cry and whine about "only" getting one hour.

They have a six-way X-Division match for a shot at Sabin's title. Fine, great. But then they're in teams, and the two winners go into a three-way. A little too convoluted, but okay. But wait, the tag teams can't tag each other! WHY?! It doesn't make the match more interesting or compelling, it just makes it complicated for the sake of being complicated.

Then there's the tag team match. Tomko (who went over Joe a scant few weeks ago) teams with Steiner (who they build as a top guy) and they get more or less squashed by Team 3D. They get little to no offense in, and then LAX tries to interfere, fails miserably, and in the process is made to look like impotent jobbers. (Hey, remember when they were the hottest act in the company and arguably the entire industry?) And yet Tomko, the guy who went over Joe, had an entire show built around him as if they were pushing him as a big deal and if I'm remembering correctly still has a title shot coming to him, still can't even capitalize on the distraction. After all this has gone down, they tease a future match between Tomko/Steiner and LAX.

Okay. So you have one team that just got squashed by Team 3D facing another team that was just made to look like a complete joke. WHY are we supposed to care?

And speaking of Team 3D - I'm trying to figure out how they're getting such a monster push and allowed to get away with not selling (or even allowing) any offense from the opposition when their act was played out four years ago, they're gaining weight at the rate of 5 pounds a week, their workrate has gone down the toilet, and most importantly aren't over with anybody.

Oh, right, because they used to be with WWE. TNA fans hate to hear that, but seriously, what other explanation could there be? Please, I'm all ears.

Oh, and you gotta love when they have a match go less than six minutes and about four of it occurs during the commercial break.

God, this show was bad this company is awful. I wouldn't even bother venting my frustrations if it weren't for the fact that this industry needs viable competition, which TNA easily could be but isn't because they screw up shit that a fourth-grader could book and make work. Well, that and the fact that I still see people that are somehow positive about the direction of the company and all the decisions they make, and it absolutely boggles my mind.

Not that this excuses all the shitty booking and shmozz finishes, but there was one golden moment of last night's show: Scott Steiner's interview segment was absolutely hilarious.

Specifically, it was first intentionally funny, as Steiner took exception to Borash saying Steiner was "in Christian's shadow", so he does a bit where he holds up his bicep over Borash's face so he can see what's it's really like to be in a shadow. "See your face...now you don't."

But the REALLY funny bit was unintentional, as ol' Mesh Head Mush Mouth tried to call Tomko stupid. His exact words:

"I am the, and far as you, Tomko, case you have, I know you get all your information by word of mouth 'cause you too stupid to read, but I am one of the most decorated tag teams ever!"

I just lost it over that. He had to restart the whole sentence at least four times because he forgot what he was supposed to be doing, then he called Tomko stupid, and then he neatly wrapped it up by proclaiming himself to be a tag team.

The intended punch line of the bit, where he told Tomko to dot his Ts and cross his Is, was completely superfluous. Of course, they really should have done a retake, but I'm glad they didn't.

Konnan randomly using the word "eggplant" and then wondering why was pretty funny, also.

It makes sense. Roode was jealous that Eric Young was the most popular ex-Team Canada member when Roode believed he himself was the far superior athlete, more charismatic, etc. So he signs Eric Young to a contract so he can basically force him to stop doing all the things that make people like him better, and instead stand in Roode's shadow.

As far as #1 -- just because something is doesn't mean it has to be. Your other points are much more difficult to argue.

I wouldn't have a problem with Eric Young shoving Brooks over when she attacked him, or pitching her out of the ring. But a kick to the stomach and a powerbomb from this dewy innocent (relatively), followed by a guitar shot from a guy who's only peripherally involved is just too much. The level of their offense was totally incommensurate to the threat that she represented.

It's a weird and entirely unnecessary booking choice to make for two of the top "good guys" in the company.

Heh. I enjoy TNA's PPVs, but I totally understand why they don't have better buyrates -- there's almost never any hint at all during any Impact that TNA is capable of putting on a decent match! Say what you will about WWE pushing wrestling to the back burner and "entertainment" to the fore -- at least they're willing to show (as they did last Monday) that they can put on a great wrestling match when they feel like it.

Oh, and the ratings are in -- Impact did a 1.0. That's even lower than last week, when they announced the Sting/Angle match! Talk about backfiring. Maybe if TNA bothered to actually fulfill a promise once in a while, people would tune in more often, huh?

I was hoping he was going to call 3D "Eggplant Wizard and King Hippo."

They're slowly starting to resemble them.

Miss Brooks can no sell a Border Toss? Uh... no. Just no.

Aside from Alex breaking Backlund's balls over the eight/nine second loss, this show was irredeemably awful.
