This is how awesome Cage and Tomko are.

Cage: "It kinda feels a little bit like old times...couple of brothers hangin' out, a coupla broheims...even maybe like a father and his kid, you know?"

(Tomko rolls eyes.)

Cage: "With baseball right around the corner, who knows, maybe we can go catch a baseball game or something, I'll buy you a Dodger dog or five. But tonight -- you have to take care of Samoa Joe. You have to take care of him -- for our team."

Tomko: "That's weird, because -- the team's not out there, Christian, it's just me. Just me."

Cage: "Yeah, yeah, no, I'll be there in spirit, like always, y'know?

Tomko: "Here's what I need to ask: what's in it for me? How does me taking out Joe benefit me?"

Cage: "First of all, I don't really care for your tone."

Ha ha ha! I love Cage & Tomko! Anyway, Cage promises Tomko a title shot if he takes out Joe!

Senshi, Jerry Lynn & Jay Lethal vs. Chris Sabin, Alex Shelley & The Austin Starr: Lethal starts out by doing his Macho Man impression -- okay, yeah, I think TNA thinks this is some sort of lightning-in-a-bottle moment, like when John Cena dressed up like Vanilla Ice, but, um, no, it's not really like that.

Anyway, the match is the most fun X Div. match on Impact in some time, including a great double team mauling of Lethal by Shelley and Sabin (reverse Atomic Drop --> drop kick to the leg --> bridging chinlock --> dropkick to the face --> heels dance around) and lots of chaotic ignoring of tags.

It's marred by too much Backlund -- he's yelling on commentary, which is one thing, but they keep cutting to long shots of him as well (Tenay looking like a scolded child), which seemed unnecessary. Also, the match ends with YET ANOTHER ROLLUP (Senshi pins Starr due to Backlundference) -- I swear to GOD none of these kids remember how to do a finisher anymore!

After the match, Backlund tries to shake Senshi's hand -- Senshi refuses -- Backlund decides he should bow instead. Heh.

Scott Steiner vs. Chase Stevens: Angle comes out to brawl with Steiner, and security and the X Div. guys come out to break it up -- what? Making the X Division backup security guys kind of belittles the whole division, like they need a second job or something. Anyway, Cornette ends up tossing Angle out of the building, telling him that the show doesn't revolve around him! Ooh, shoot!

Anyway, the Stevens push starts now, with -- oh wait no that's a belly-to-belly overhead superplex. Never mind!

Shelley is back out and shows a video of LAX taking out Johnny Rodz -- Devon's trainer. Brother Ray comes out and completely hoses Alex, telling him that he's "nothing," and that Ray doesn't even know who he is. (He then calls Alex a "shining star," so...I dunno.) Kevin Nash comes out and Ray says that Alex is Nash's "butt buddy." (Tenay: "That was snug!" What!?)

LAX ambush Ray, who fends them off with ease (!) until Alex gets his revenge with a low blow, and Hernandez puts Ray through a table with a spinebuster! Yeah! I'm SO DONE with Ray I tell you what.

Joe does a promo, which is interrupted by Abyss beating up...well, I think that's one of Vern Schillinger's kids, actually. Anyway -- Joe breaks it up and starts in on Abyss, telling him to be his own man and not a puppet and stuff.

Samoa Joe vs. Tomko: Fun little match, with Tomko taking an ugly spill to the upside and then getting nailed by Joe's Elbow Suicida. Match ends with Cage hitting Joe with a chair, and then Tomko follows up with a clothesline -- AND PINS JOE! TOMKO PINS JOE! OMG THE INTERNET IS ON FIRE!!!

Joe recovers quickly and DROPS both Cage and Tomko, but when Steiner arrives, the numbers are TOO MUCH for Joe. Angle has been kicked out of the building, so there's no one to help Joe -- until ABYSS comes out and chases off the heels! But wait -- Abyss hits the BLACK HOLE SLAM on Joe! And there's the show!

What utterly retarded booking.

To those who say people wouldn't look; they wouldn't be interested; they're too complacent, indifferent and insulated, I can only reply: There is, in one reporter's opinion, considerable evidence against that contention. But even if they are right, what have they got to lose? Because if they are right, and this instrument is good for nothing but to entertain, amuse and insulate, then the tube is flickering now and we will soon see that the whole struggle is lost. This instrument can teach, it can illuminate; yes, and it can even inspire. But it can do so only to the extent that humans are determined to use it to those ends. Otherwise it is merely wires, and lights, in a box.-Edward R. Murrow

Heel Cage is infinitely better than babyface Cage. I'm having a hard time predicting the outcome of the Destination X title match. I wonder if they will try to make a Batista-HHH storyline out of Cage-Tomko...

Tomko is great as Christian's muscle, but not as a legit, Diesel, or Batista like threat. Remember how he floundered in WWE after Christian left? He has no business going over Joe, I don't care if Christian pulled a gun and put bullets in Joe's head.

Decent enough wrestling this week, which is a change. But that ending? Damn.

The writers of Oz might be able to make this show worth watching. I don't think Vince Russo is up to that challenge. I read the recaps of this show every week hoping that one week when I'm done I'll regret having missed it, and feel compelled to catch it next week. Thus far that isn't happening.

You know, I'm in the same boat where I'm hoping for some sort of improvement that will warrant watching again, but it seems like this promotion has reached the point of no return - where they can't do ANYTHING right. In reading this recap, I thought to myself "fantastic, we're not having literally 40-50 people crammed into a one-hour show." Then I get to the part where Tomko goes over Joe (outside interference or not), and it's just...what the fuck. TNA has gone from building Joe up as a potential superstar to being completely unable and unwilling to protect him. Nevermind the fact that the X-Division, which used to be THE draw of TNA (any fan or person involved in the company who tries to tell you different are either lying or complete retards), is treated as an afterthought in the wake of Bob Backlund's "whacky antics."

I totally fault Russo for all of this, and if there are any apologists still left for the guy that are reading this: I don't even know what to say to you. Since taking over the creative side he's made the promotion's television and Pay-Per-Views absolutely AWFUL, which considering what they were doing in the early part of 2006 (particularly on PPV) took a lot of hard work and effort. Before I was willing to accept that one man and one man alone did not kill WCW, but this nonsense is changing my mind very quickly.

It's a damn shame, really. TNA should by all means be successful - they have the talent, the tools, and the star power (Angle and to a lesser extent Sting) to be a #2 promotion rather than a TV show that ranks below any of the three television shows WWE puts on. Instead, since the Fall every single resource and minute of airtime has been completely wasted.

Interesting that the most negative comments come from people reading the recaps. How about watching the show if you want to have an opinion that matters.

Totally shitting on this episode is nonsense because it's been the best show in weeks.
- There were no ridiculous storylines or gimmick matches.
- Three wrestling matches. A good length X Division match, a Steiner squash and a very good main event. What more can you ask for from a one hour show?
- Shelley got mic time, Christian and Tomko got mic time, Angle got mic time, and Joe got mic time. Pretty much all their best characters other than AJ were used well.
- Bubba cut a good promo, Nash made an appearance to defend Shelley, even though that match would be a disaster it's at least an interesting setup to see if Nash gets involved with Bubba in someway. They may be past their primes, but they are two of the most recognizable guys on the show.
- So what if Tomko beat Joe. Joe can lose five thousand consecutive matches and nobody would care that he lost a match. He'd still be considered a monster and he'd still be as over as he is now. What they did do with this match, besides have a very good main event that didn't give away a future ppv match either, was that they actually had a compelling storyline out of it. Now Tomko has a shot at Christian's title. If you'd rather see Samoa Joe squash Tomko then apparently you like boring shit that doesn't go anywhere.

I saw the show. There was nothing BUT ridiculous storylines. You say there were three wrestling matches, but there really was only one--the Steiner squash was barely there, and the X Division match was mostly just background to the storyline establishing Bob Backlund as a bully who screams randomly at the announcers. Because nothing will get Austin Starr--sorry, THE Austin Starr--over as a heel than having him feud with a old man heel.

And then there's yet another round of LAX/Dudleys. Hey, it's one thing to attack someone's family...but when you go after their *trainer*, then things really heat up. And in 2007, isn't the day of the homophobic face really over?

I have no problem with Tomko beating Joe given the storyline context--especially since it will all be forgotten when, I'm guessing, Joe gets the gold at the PPV. But they took a wonderful moment with Joe verbally dressing down Abyss and turned it into another stupid swerve. I could just hear Russo gloating: "Ha ha! I fooled them! They thought I had actually booked something interesting and original! Ha Ha! Swerved them again!"

Lousy show. I don't think I've missed an Impact yet, going back to FSN, but if they keep up like this, when my girlfriend comes back it'll get tossed out the window.

Hyatte picked a bad time to retire. He loved Johnny Rodz.

I thought Steiner looked pretty good in his promo against Angle. He seemed to be trying a little more than in his last TNA run. I'm not digging the Sting promos against Abyss. This just doesn't seem his style at all.

The X Division match was nice, but the finish killed it, and Backland isn't working for me. Then again, it's hard to pay attention to him while Don West wears that hideous shirt.

I don't care about Eric Young as he does very little in the ring on those rare occasions when he's in the ring. He's in Eugene territory, and the crowd will turn on him unless they put him to work. I think Roode can be salvaged if they get him away from Brooks and Eric. He might simply be a dependable tag wrestler.

I'm not convinced that the PPV is worth my money so far. And I agree that the Elevation X match looks as ill-advised as all the other scaffold matches. Cornette is right off-screen. You'd think he'd mention his knee injury as a warning.

The Bubba promo suggested to me the next feud for the bothers, regardless of whether they win the belts. I don't know how well they can work against such smaller guys who fly around (I'm forgetting all their previous feuds with similar opponents.).

See here's the problem with that statement. Right now Impact is drawing a 0.9 rating every week. On a good week it bumps up to a 1.0. If that number is ever going to move up, it's going to come not from the staunch defenders of the product who watch it every week, but from those of us who like wrestling but have yet to be convinced to start watching it. Or in my case, to return to it, as I watched it for a long time back in the weekly PPV era.

You say I and others who don't watch are "shitting on" the product. And that's not really the case. I'm saying, as a former consumer, what my reaction to the product as it has been recapped is. When I read about the latest wacky Bob Backlund stuff, or Kevin Nash turning the X Division into his comedy hour, or Ron Killings going to Hollywood, or the endless wackiness with Eric Young, or Tyson Tomko having a high-profile spot, or Scott Steiner being in a main event spot, none of that is going to compel me to tune in. I don't need to watch Scott Steiner to know that he stopped interesting me sometime around 1999. I suppose I could be terribly mistaken, but from the reports I've seen I don't think I am.

Also, I have tried watching the show. From time to time I catch an episode of Impact, and when it's done I feel much the same way I felt watching the few episodes of WSX. Lots and lots of things happen and very little of it sticks. Reading the WO recap of the show I noted over 30 different people mentioned as appearing in the show either live or in clips. And that's not counting the announcers or random security guys. I doubt the best booker on the planet could make things feel meaningful with 30 guys appearing in a show with about 43-44 minutes of time to work with. Russo is certainly not the guy to do that.

No, I don't watch the show every week. I did once, and if the show were to appear worth watching I would be happy to do so again. But right now, it doesn't sound like anything I would be interested in watching on a regular basis, or more importantly, spending money on once a month. And if they are ever going to grow beyond their small fanbase, they need to get me, and the hundreds of thousands of people like me, to change that opinion.

X-E's co-Worst Poster of all time! JKyle.com says:

While Impact may have a way to go it is far from horrible so it is a bit much to see people who don't regularly watch the show post in EVERY thread to complain that the recaps don't make the show sound good. Look at the posts of the people watching the show and the criticism is nowhere near the level of complaints from people who didn't watch the show.

It may not be the same people but it happens every week. At least one or two guys come in to the thread to whine and
assuage their vendetta with Vince Russo. And it gets old.

Some things don't make sense, some don't go anywhere. But that's always been a part of wrestling and I can't say it's got any worse since Russo came on board. Impact from FSN had problems, Impact now has problems.

So if it's not too much to ask could people stay out of the thread unless you watched the show.

It's fine that it's your opinion the show doesn't sound like it's worth watching but that's not actually discussing what you thought when you saw the show. And then it inspires folks like Quezzy and I to not talk about the show while we respond to you.

As for the show...

This one was pretty good, with a bunch of intersecting story lines, some fun matches, and Alex Shelley.

I've no interest in seeing ANYONE pushed like Cena or Goldberg so I'm not going to faint if Samoa Joe loses a match now and then. I agree it should've taken more but it wasn't a clean loss so the marks will forget.

Christian was on FIRE tonight and I hope his run goes a bit longer then the next PPV. As long as they don't make it reminiscent of a Double J run I'm fine with Joe chasing the title for a while.

As for Abyss, well he's a big dumb monster and it's completely in his character to turn on Joe. It's not really swerve city at all because he's done the same to everyone who has tried to talk sense into him. Joe, Sting, etc... it would probably take a manipulator like Raven or Mitchell to change Abyss' character. He just doesn't have it in him to do the right thing because a rational voice asked him to.
